Elite Dangerous

Odyssey drops today, and the servers are offline for maintenance. Be interesting to see what we actually get!

Yep. My main & alt have already preloaded and will be ready to go when I get off work.

Got a bit tired of the ‘sit in a shuttle , die , sit in a shuttle’ of the alpha and have not had time to play the regular game. Looking forward to everything going live though.

I’m glad I played the alpha. Entering Odyssey automatically launches a tutorial, which I could not finish due to being unable to overload an airlock. I was able to switch from transfer to overload but overload wouldn’t fire for some reason.

Had to tell the game to skip the tutorial.

OK I downloaded fired it up and was 2 minutes into the on foot tutorial intro and BSOD crash.
Hoping my PC is up to it. Xeon E3 processor with quadro m1200 GPU in a 17in laptop.

Well that tutorial scared the crap out of me, I thought I was starting back from scratch. Now comfortably back inside the good ship ‘The Sandwich Maker’

Welp, no more taking E:D with me when I can’t be near my desktop. Won’t fit on my Surface now.

I just had two (incomplete) missions disappear after I lost contact with the server. Oh, well. I need to go to bed anyway.

I played a bit last night , I need a bunch of materials to engineer some mutlicannons on my Challanger, so I went surface prospecting. I came across a surface distress call , which was a crashed SRV and 6 wanted people hanging around.
I dispatched them with my SRVs cannon and a a little bit of running them over then went outside and scavenged a few bits and pieces.
I didn’t take any of the things flagged as illegal as I am ot sure how that gets handled as I fly into a space station.

Overall the flow from ship to SRV to foot is all pretty seamless and I like it although I think it would be cooler if you could just walk up the stairs case before transitioning into the inside spaceship instance.

The new frameshift hyperdrive graphics are nice and the ship outfitting and maintenance screens are different and I think I like them.

I was trying to do a “power up” mission and sneak up on some NPC scavengers when I lost the servers last night. Learned my lesson earlier in a different “power up” mission – use the SRV to get close to the target rather than going the whole way on foot.

I assume there would be no problem if you took them to an Anarchy station.

The illegal stuff is pretty straight-forward. As you approach a station, or if you’re in a belt or anywhere the space police are, you may get scanned. They’ll almost always tell you they’re scanning. If you’re quick on the draw and your ship is fast, you can boost out of scanner range, as those are usually between 2 to 3 km max (I think the most absurdly expensive, power-hungry scanner can only reach 4 km).

To smuggle things into a station, I’d fly way far back from the station, line up on the mail slot, wait for traffic to clear, request permission to land and barge straight in as fast as you reasonably dare.

Once you’re through the envelope, you’re in the clear so you can relax and go about your docking as normal and can even use the auto-lander if that’s your jam. But you will have to fly through the envelope manually if you want to have a hope of getting inside in time. (You could do it “properly” by running dark and popping heat sinks as you go, but I’ve not found it necessary.)

If they catch you, you’re likely going to face some fines that are worth more than the goods. They won’t go violent over contraband, unless that got changed since I was last on.

Ultimately, almost all the illegal goods really aren’t worth the hassle unless you’re trying to undermine the ruling factions and/or supporting the ne’er-do-well groups.

Thanks , so they are the same as illegal passengers and cargo, I was hoping they would be different as so small. May be they need to add a 'security scan ’ you walk though in foot mode in the station, the time limiting factor being how long you can keep the items wedged in your own personal smuggling compartment.

I am such a child .

I can generally slide into a section running dark without heat sinks as my passenger Krait Phantom build runs pretty frosty, but I only really do that for high value passengers who dont like being scanned. As you say illegal cargo and the like is just too much hassle , well for me it is.

I was not in the Alpha so I played Odyssey the first time last night. I was impressed. It felt like a pretty well-done FPS bolted on to the space sim. It also runs really well on my system on the High setting.

My only gripe is that the tutorial had missed some things and I had to Google how to do some things like swap modes on my tools and getting a ship. But otherwise I really like this.

I recently binge-watched all of The Expanse which is now one of my favorite shows ever, and I get a real strong vibe in this game like that show. I am so happy I got this. Now I just hope they get around to handing out the preorder skins we were supposed to get.

Combination code strings sometimes still don’t get populated. I had to exit to the main menu and reenter to get a code just now.

FDev needs to sort out these damn server issues! I just had four source & return missions worth some 7 million credits disappear!

I’ve yet to be able to get in and play beyond the tutorial, some two days after launch. Appalling, frankly.

I see the Steam version just updated again. I wonder if they’ve fixed the server stability.

They’re trying.

This is from this morning, before the released the update that just got pushed out minutes ago.

With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey .

First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game. We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.

We’ll see. The game seems to perform okay for me, as little as I’ve had a chance to play it, but I have also experienced crashes. Either the simple black screen where nothing will happen (either on launching it, or when I am doing something in the game) or a straight-up crash to desktop with a bug report window. That’s what I’m hoping we see cleared up.

Great, I now have a consistent issue where when I try to launch the Holo Me to tweak my character I get a black screen. The game isn’t crashed because I hear sounds, and I can hit the Esc key and go back to the main menu, but the game isn’t playable at that point. I guess I’ll try to delete my graphics settings yet again. It was fine yesterday.

The game is pretty fun if I could ever really play it.

Even after the second hotfix, I still can’t connect, getting an “orange sidewinder” error. Very frustrating.
