Eureka season 4 premiere "Founder's Day" 07/09/10

I really liked this episode–one of the show’s best, IMO.

Random thoughts:

In the “previously on Eureka” at the beginning, there is a very brief scene of Tess breaking up with Carter via hologram. WTF? I rewatched the season 3 finale recently and there was no such scene in it. I would have preferred they show us that scene in full. Oh well.

So Zane proposes to Jo. I’m glad she didn’t say yes. Zane’s gotten more likeable than when he was first introduced, but something about him is still inherently douchbaggy.

Was the world in the 1940’s really sepia-toned?

Baltar!

LOVED Fargo’s *Terminator *version of his entry into the past! Classic!

Jo’s entrance was fun, too.

Loved the ending, starting with Carter kissing Alison on the dance floor and then them rushing to each other back in the present. It looks like they may finally have a chance to be “together”… until we begin to see that things are different. I fully expected Zoe to be back home–I was really surprised when Tess showed up. I like Tess, so that’s not a bad thing–but so much for Carter/Alison

I was expecting that maybe it would turn out that Zane had been taken to the past also (unbeknownst to the other characters) and had been left behind. Instead, he’s back to bad-boy status.

Looks like we’ll be getting more James Callis.

I know the actress who plays Tess was one of the leads on Eastwick, but that got cancelled so I wonder how much we’ll see of her in the future. I’d also like to know if Zoe will be returning full-time. Anyone know if the actress is signed on for this season?

“The equation has changed” indeed! I wonder how long they’ll play this out, before hitting the inevitable reset button. I think it’ll be great if they stick with this new timeline for the whole season, or even permanently.

So what did you think?

I enjoyed it, too.

My main hunh? moment was with Kevin, though. Last time we saw him wasn’t he like 8 years old? Now he’s a teenager (and not autistic).

I agree that there is a stench of douchiness that circles Zane.

I watched an interview with Colin Ferguson and Salli Richardson-Whitfield a few weeks ago - they said this season is going to be a move back to the quirkiness of the first season, after getting a bit bogged down in weirdness last season. All I know is I am glad the show is back.

Loved the ep. Nice set-up for a shake-up of the characters. I figure they’ll get about 4 episodes out of the time change, then play with the repercussions for the rest of the season.

What I really want them to do is bring back Nathan Stark. He isn’t dead. He’s just pining for the fjords.

Oh, please no. I almost gave up on Eureka the last time they did the “everything up to now has been a dream” reset. It’s very hard to get invested in characters that you know are going to be totally re-written every season, without so much as a memory of what they were.

Yeah, I imagine they fix it all eventually, but I hope they stick with for at least a few episodes. And this would be the perfect chance for them to bring back Stark. I don’t think he’s done anything except for a vodka commercial.

Also, the 40’s scientist guy keeps reminding of the British agent in Inglorious Basterds.

Wow, I really liked that. I’ll be very happy if they can continue to keep some of the cheese out and bring it back to just being sciencey fun.

Jordan Hinson is definitely back as Zoe.

I wish they could bring back Stark (and his android son). I don’t care if they don’t become regulars in the show. I just want them to be alive and happy somewhere in the Eureka universe.

So Dr. Grant/Baltar wasn’t that important to Eureka’s early days that his accidental jump to the future only caused minor changes to the timeline?

Also, it must be rough for Allison to see Kevin all non-autistic and not wanting to restore the timeline as they know it.

As for Stark, last I remember he was killed off by a religious zealot wearing lots of silver and a bomb

I thought Baltar’s accent could be heard underneath his fake American one.

You’re not the only one. he was clearly struggling with it.

Only in the altered timeline, not being autistic that is. Bolding mine.

I so want Carter and Alison to end up together, but the creators of the show will probably end this arc with Alison feeling it’s best not to pursue it, leaving Carter blue…in more ways than one.

Indeed

It just seems unnecessary, too. I mean, I know he was supposed to be helping the American government…but so was Einstein.

He could have just had his regular accent.

Now Jamie Bamber(Lee Adama), on the other hand, can do an American accent really well. I’m surprised they didn’t use him.

IIRC, Kevin got all growed up as a result of his encounter with the artifact, way back when.

Stark got “disintegrated” stopping a time-flux wormhole thingy on his re-wedding day.

This confused me too. I also went back and rewatched the previous finale and noted the total lack of such scene. There was some other show that did this sort of thing a lot last year, but I can’t remember which one.

WWAAAAAAALLLLLLTTT!

Well he’s still autistic, at least until after they change the timeline.

What? When have they ever done that? Are you thinking of the one episode where it starts in an alternate future? That hardly counts as “everything up to now” being reset since it’s merely “20 minutes of one episode” that gets reset.

I noticed in Callis’ IMDB profile <which I looked up to see if it was really him> that he’s listed in 4 shows of Eureka this season, but not 4 concurrent ones. Like…Founder’s Day, and then episodes 4-6-8; something like that. So it sounds as if it’ll carry on a little while, though that could be a total plant and not real at all.

I liked the 40’s-era musical cues throughout the episode–I guess it was swing music?

I hope we get at at least another visit from Taggart this season. With either the wonky timeline or even Jo and Zane’s issues in the “real” timeline, there are certainly opportunities to bring him back in for an episode or two.

Side note: I was channel-surfing the other day and came across a TV movie called True Women, about Civil War era settlers in Texas. It starred Angelina Jolie, Dana Delany, and Annabeth Gish, all of whom I have always found very attractive, so I stopped to watch it for a while. One of the women’s slaves looked very familiar to me and I finally realized it was Salli Richardson (AKA “Allison Blake”). Talk about your beautiful cast!

IMDb doesn’t usually accurately reflect an episode’s cast until after it airs. Until then it’s just guessing. Sometimes it will accidentally assume a one-off guest role will recur, for example.

Even though Baltar’s accent wasn’t genuine and may have faltered a little, I really liked its character. (And it’s way better than Hugh Laurie’s, IMHO).
