Evil Captor's suspension

Actually I think you might be wrong, if a poster is really annoying other posters with constant hijacks for the same agenda, the mods should smack them down. Isn’t that what happened to Liberal a while back. I actually liked EC, I hope he comes back and behaves. I think the bulk of his posts were valuable. I also understand why people were annoyed with him.

Jim {I don’t own chaps and I don’t plan to}

Is it? (I’m honestly curious)

I thought that the mods had consistently refused to say that his hijacking threads was wrong and that his suspension was for talking about how he’d be dead in two years. Was I wrong?

Heh. This has already morphed into one of the finest circular firing squad threads we’ve had in a while.

Seems more like a crazed meele… people being shot at by a firing squad don’t normally shoot back.

Like I said earlier, if being a tiresome boor were a bannable offense, we’d all be out the door except for Eve. (And then someone thoughtfully pointed out Sampiro - point well taken.)

I guarantee you that every single poster on this board who posts more than twice a week gets on someones nerves.

I’d say it was a suspension because lots of people reported posts that the mods deemed inappropriate. The mods didn’t suspend him because of popular demand, I don’t think. They’ve never shown signs of doing that before.

And plenty of people have gotten in trouble for constant hijacking. Look at all the posters who’ve gotten in trouble for dragging politics into every thread.

The question is more whether they get on most people’s nerves.

Hence the adjective “circular” in my comment. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ah-hah!
Um… I knew that.

~escapes~

And, when informed of it, whether they get off of said nerves or make a point of repeatedly jumping back on 'em.

Yeah. I woulda been fine if he’d just knocked it off, but when he decided he’d won the internets and therefore would deliberately act like a jerk and then posted his condescending bullshit about wanting to enlighten the rest of us during Ensign Edison’s thread, I definitely hope he doesn’t come back. He may contribute in some other threads - though his political views are not exactly insightful - but I just personally dislike him now.

Hmm, well I know an innocent little Café Thread on the Daily Show set Liberal off on yet another Political High-jack. This led to multiple pittings where I think he eventually melted down.
They gave him a month off to recollect himself and I don’t know of any problem since. Even though the dead in 2 thing was the final straw it was multiple warnings about hijacks in a short period that really got him suspended in my opinion.

Jim

That is very true, but I think when a single poster generates a huge amount of bad post report from a large number of posters, it puts them into a special category.

Jim

Personally, that doesn’t make a difference to me. As (I think it was ) you pointed out, this is not a democracy.

Just because a person is tiresome and annoying doesn’t make them a jerk. Even if 51 of the hundred people they hang out with come up and tell them they’re tiresome and annoying, they’re not a jerk if they refuse to change their behavior - they’re just being true to themselves.

Now, if they revel in pissing people off with their behavior - then they’re a jerk.

Aside from all that, I’d love to see statistics on how many people were honestly annoyed by EC, how many didn’t care, and how many actually enjoyed his diversions.

Somehow, I doubt 51% or more of the board was really annoyed.

I have the sneaking suspicion, Exy, that you are a little biased in this case because of the earlier Pit thread in which EC claimed “Victory”. Do you honestly think it’s a good idea to let posters be voted off the island if they earn a 51% disapproval rating? Would you be willing to stake your own membership on such a vote?

I don’t know. I’m tired, your mileage may vary, no hard feelings, random conciliatory cliches here.

It puts the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again!

Oh, c’mon. Somebody had to say it.

Beautiful.

That I remember, but I didn’t remember that there were modly warnings along with the melting. Thanks for clearing up my ignorance.

When the FCC gets 100 letters complaining about a radio show, that puts them into a special category too, usually one of getting a hefty fine.

It’s only when you find out that those 100 were not spontaneous complaints from listeners, but an organized campaign to attack a hated personality that it raises eyebrows.

That’s the x-factor here. People were complaining about him on another board, opened a pit thread here advertising the problem they have with him. After that whole mess, his posting habits get put under a microscope and anyone who doesn’t like the tone of his post can report him, knowing there are other people who agree. I wonder if there would be nearly as many complaints if certain folks didn’t press for action against him.

Oh great, and I thought you and Maureen were my friends. Now I am getting Squicked out.

Jim {Its not easy being Squeeked}

That’s a sneaking suspicion? I’ve said as much. I didn’t start out with any particular desire to get him kicked off the island because I don’t like him. I did it to point out his obnoxious behavior. Ideally, he would have acknowledged that his behavior bothered others, and might merit being toned down. That or other people might catch on to his games, and tell him to shut up. The latter happened - but not before I got marked as the SDMB’s resident schoolmarm. Meanwhile, Arnold Winklereid posted a bunch of out and out lies claiming I was only pitting him on behalf of the snarkboards (again, a ridiculous idea as the snarkboards are anything but a unified brigade) - and Evil Captor latched onto that even though it was plainly untrue. Evil Captor - along with some of his defenders - was a dick to me personally, and he was a dick to everyone who didn’t like his behavior when he smugly decided to ramp up the gratuitous bondage references in the aftermath. He declared victory and decided - wrongly, obviously - that he had the whole board’s support in the matter.

Yeah, I’m influenced by that. When a person’s behavior is an annoyance and they promise to knock it off afterwards, it’s all copacetic. I’ve certainly been accidentally annoying, and I’ve made an effort to improve when I got called on it. When a person’s behavior is an annoyance and they decide to double down on it when they’re called on it, it leaps into the realm of the pathetically childish. That’s what Evil Captor showed himself to be. After that big fuck you to everyone who didn’t like the tied-up-naked-ladies talk, and the condescending lectures on how we should be as liberated and enlightened as him in regards to sexuality, I don’t like him at all, and I think the boards would be better without him.

YMMV.
