In my own personal EC-themed Pit thread, he confirmed that he had been asked to stop bringing up bondage so much for a ‘few’ months. He also seemed to think that period had come to an end.
I have to say his recent movie thread had a lovely premise, but it kept sliding into bondage. That may have been something on the scales.
Well done sir.
I saw and posted in the same thread and saw the slippage but I thought maybe it was a gray area as he started the thread. He wasn’t screwing around with someone else’s.
I don’t object to the Suspension, I just wish that Tuba had clarified a little more to head of this inevitable Pit Thread.
Jim
No force in the world could stop this Pit thread.
I can’t see any of EC’s posts in that thread that slid out of bondage.
I personally didn’t find them upsetting. They’re just the most recent posts I could find by him that could have been the straw that broke the camels back, or whatever reason the mods chose to suspend him.
I suspect the mods were looking for a chance to take some action against him, saw him post those and decided that was “enough”. They seem to be a pretty poor reason by themselves, though.
Good God–I thought those were hysterical! I particularly like the sexarian violence pun.
Lord, someday I think I’ll be reading about my suspension. I’m not knocking mods–their jobs are not easy by any means–but I just don’t get it. So, I’ll stop trying. On to Cafe Society!
The nudie-bar thread? There was bondage in there? I sure as hell didn’t see any. Sheesh - and my wife tells me I’m prudish sometimes.

I don’t even recall where he got *officially * warned. I remember a lot of posters yelling at him, and I followed the whole brouhaha but perhaps I missed the actual mod smackdown. If anyone has a link, I’d sure appreciate it.
As I recall, he was asked to tone it down for a while. I don’t have a link for you though.
No, the one about Deathstalker.
… slid out of bondage. God, so many things I could say there. So many. Stay good!

Just in case you’re not trying to whoosh us, I am (and I’m pretty sure E-Sabbath was) referring to this more recent thread of EC’s, containing the following gems:
I think “Deathstalker” is a fair nominee for best SF/Fantasy film of the 80s.
This little-known B-flick was the first to follow John Norman’s lead in introducing nudity and bondage themes into the sword and sandal fantasy genre, influencing a whole chain of sword and sandal movies thereafter, even unto the present.
Deathstalker established its barbaric cred in the opening scene, where a bunch of degenerate caveman types have a hot babe tied to a tree. They’re building a campfire and talking about who has first dibs on her, when the hero, a muscular guy, arrives. He kicks their collective asses, chases them off, then draws his knife and approaches the hottie tied to the tree. You expect him to cut the ropes binding her. Instead he thrusts the knife into the tree and starts molesting the hottie while she’s still tied up. And this is the hero, remember? Clearly, things were different in those days.
Nudity? OK, [Clash of the Titans] did have whatsername chained to a cliff, but only as a sacrifice to the Kraken, which I think was going to eat her, which I think harms the sex thing a lot. YMMV.
I just don’t get the faintest sex/slavegirl/bondage vibe from “Clash of the Titans” and I don’t remember a heck of a lot of gratuitous nudity. Truth to tell I don’t remember any. I don’t get any sense that the filmmakers were thinking, “Those Gor novels are selling like hotcakes, think we’ll slip a little hottie slavegirl and barbaric warrior romance in there.”
Well, true, [Deathstalker’s] not a good movie considered strictly from the “watching” standpoint, not even “for a guy with my particular set of fetishes.” It’s more of a trailblazer kind of movies that only certain people like to watch – kinda like “Last Year at Marienbad” or “The Bicycle Theif” or “A Man and A Woman.” The naked women being groped, etc., do help a lot, though.
To use a business metaphor, B movies are about delivering the cheese – the cheese being whatever reward the movie offers its audience for watching. In a lot of cases, it’s heroic guys and gals beating the crap out of evil guys and gals. In romantic comedies, it’s about how a couple overcomes their neuroses or peculiar circumstances or whatever in order to have a satisfying sexual relationship/marriage. In the case of films about strippers, it’s naked women dancing. In the case of 80s sword and sorcery films, it’s muscular barbarians slugging it out over naked slavegirls in chains, basically.
I guess I was uncelar in explaining why I nominated “Deathstalker.” Sword and Sandal flicks of course or not synonymous with sexual bondage. But they CAN, because of their historical nature and subject matter, include a lot of sexual bondage imagery if they so choose. Sexy slavegirls slinking around all over the place, just waiting for a heroic barbarian to or a bad guy with a gleam in his eye to do something exciting. Damsels in distress waiting to be rescued, or … whatever. Kickass heroines captured by the bad guys, who molest the heroine before she manages to escape and kick their asses. And it’s not necessarily just an audience of hardcore bondage fetishists who will enjoy such imagery. Most people will. The success of the Gor novels and later, Deathstalker and its imitators, showed that this was a sound idea.
OK, I watched Deathstalker [again] and now I feel a LOT better about it. True, many parts of the film are seriously underlit. But when it comes to delivering cheesy SF thrills, Deathstalker is definitely at the top of the heap. It had a LOT more nudity and bondage than I remembered, more or less seamlessly integrated into the adventure story. It had muscular barbaric heroes fighting it out and killing one another senselessly, and half-naked women treated like sexual snack foods, as well as a sword-weiling kickass hottie who has brief but meaningful sex with the hero. Altogether, a very fine 80s sword and sandal film.
Several posters in the thread noted that EC was using it as an excuse to talk about Deathstalker and while I was being facetious earlier and not every post of his was about bondage, I’d say its pretty clear exactly what he wanted to talk about.
Yadda yadda free speech, yadda yadda not hurting anybody, yadda yadda object to suspension.
I can’t see any reason for the suspension other than bending over backwards to the prudish offenderati. So what if he does consistently steer threads, now and then, towards a topic of choice? It’s an amusing quirk.
So, hey, who’s reading Infinite Crisis?

No, the one about Deathstalker.
Oh yeah. Forgot about that one. Or maybe I blocked it out of my mind.

Yadda yadda free speech,
What the fuck does “free speech” have to do with this?

What the fuck does “free speech” have to do with this?
Not a damn thing.

What the fuck does “free speech” have to do with this?
Because his suspension is censorship of the highest order, you see.
I actually found EC’s post about Deathstalker illuminating. I don’t know whether I agree with it - I haven’t actually seen the film - but I’ve seen the odd Sword & Sorcery film and while his POV doesn’t quite fit, I retain an open mind. However, it should be remembered that there are minors who read the SDMB, and (for example) do you really want a juvenile reading a film thread and suddenly coming across something like that? IIRC the minimum age for the SDMB is 13 - far too young to understand. And he kept doing it.
Count me with the mods here.
I think the “Deathstalker” thread pretty clearly illuminates the problem with Evil Captor. A common criticism of people who object to prurient (or obsessive) content on these message boards is “If you don’t like it, don’t read it”. Which works, if the thread topic is reasonably representative of the contents. But if someone stealths their favorite obsession onto the message board by starting a seemingly innocuous and even promising thread, and then immediately hijacking their own thread, it’s hard to avoid it.
I’d guess it was this misuse of the mechanics of the messageboard, rather than the underlying skeeviness of his hobby that caused the banning.

Lamest justification ever.
Have you seen some of the shit that gets posted on these Boards? If we’re going to start cautioning or suspending people for posting content that some people might consider inappropriate for teenagers, we might as well shut down the Dope altogether.
I don’t agree with the suspension, but even if i did it wouldn’t be for the lame-ass reason you’ve posted here.

Please, won’t somebody think of the children?
