So why reject it out of hand? Where is the harm to town? Writing off an idea because it might not, or even likely won’t, work is silly. Why cut off any avenues of productive information generation even if they might not work out? The game, for town, is about generating information and leveraging that information in combination with our time and numerical advantage. The best strategy for town is to generate as much information as possible while the numbers and time are still on our side.
I happen to agree that it’s not a good idea, but your argument here doesn’t make sense to me. The third and fourth sentences quoted above are completely meaningless, and the last one gives an opinion about cover stories. Do you have any substantial argument why “it won’t work”?

There are no post restrictions. As long as you are alive, you may post whatever you like, wherever you like, whenever you like (subject, of course, to the rules and guidlines of the Straight Dope Message Board). You may quote your role PM, and any PM sent to you by the moderators. You may discuss strategy by Day or by Night. If you have access to outside boards, you may post to them on any subject at any time. If someone claims a post restriction of any kind, they are lying; lynch them.[/QUOTE]
I’m not as familiar with the canon from this movie as I am from LOTR or Harry Potter. Are there enough discrete characters in this story for everyone to have a unique Role Name? or would a mass name claim run into a bunch of ‘villagers’ or something similar?
Eh, no hard feelings toward her, but I’ve just been increasingly frustrated in games as of late with players seemingly waiting until the 11th hour to vote…which usually touches off a huge melee of votes and unvotes and all that jazz. I find my mindset in these games is becoming more like Pleonast every day: Vote early, vote often, and don’t be afraid to vote to shake things up a little to see what kind of reactions you get.
As it is, right now, the whole “talking to scum” thing pinged me.
I didn’t have a specific character (from the Evil Dead movies) name. I had a general specific role name (I.E. it wasn’t like “You are Ash”, it was like “You are a Boingoboingowhatchamacallit.”
Are you saying you did receive a specific character name? Because your post here really makes it sound like you did.
Funny. Idle is one of those players who, like Normal Phase, always thinks I’m Scum. And it’s true, they’re usually right, but that’s because I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t Scum and lived for longer than a Day. Cecil Pond, maybe? Really, my Night Zero shenanigans were me making it clear that I had no desire to be Scum, and hoping that they’d do the right thing.
(The funny thing, as I mentioned in a PM to story when I finally got my role and knew I was off the hook, was that if I had been Scum, I would have recruited me. story said that he would have too. But I’m beginning to think that they had other plans.)
vote Idle Thoughts
Idle has no real evidence for voting me. He says that if I were Scum, I would have essentially protested too much to get heat off of me. First off, it does the opposite. Second, this thread is not the only place where I’ve essentially begged for a Town role. Check pretty much every thread regarding Mafia I’ve posted in since I was investigated in Halloween, and you’ll see me saying that I really, really, REALLY was sick of being Scum. Being sick of Scum doesn’t automatically make me more likely to be Scum in this case. For Idle’s theory to work, I would have already been Scum when I did that, but my behavior was just as easily explained by the fact that I knew there was a chance that I could be recruited, and I wanted to make sure that Scum would feel like total assholes if they recruited me, thus making it less likely to happen. So we’re dealing with something that is equally as likely (if not more likely) to be Town-motivated (or, well, wanting-to-be-Town-motivated), but Idle is voting for me.
My theory? Idle was already Scum, and figured it would be easier to recruit someone else, then try to paint me as Scum. A townie at that point has no real reason to cast heat on someone–even if you’re on the same team at that point, you might not be later…and that might be because you got recruited or because I did. But if you already know you’re not on the same team, then why not plant those seeds? Hence my vote.
I like this.
Sure - Scum might have cover roles and yes, they might be able to snip a part of their original Role-PM and make them look innocent.
But - it will limit their options if they need to fake claim later. We might not get scum right away - but I think it will improve our odds later in the game.
I say we go for it!
It worked in Terminator2 and I’ve seen it work in other games as well. But in the T2 (this board) it worked rather early in the game.
I was fairly new to mafia back then and didn’t have any idea of what was going to happen if we al claimed. But seeing it work like that made me completely change my mind in regarding to claiming in a game.
NAF, I’m guessing you meant to quote the post where Oy! asked “what you got?” and not the one you did? Cause otherwise it doesn’t make sense.
This is my concern with the mass claim. If we do a straight role PM quote, Scum would have their targets lined up. Though, it would also potentially out scum if they haven’t gotten cover stories. It’d also open up a whole slew of WIFOMing from scum and town power roles. Guessing who is the most powerful non protected town power role to target for a night kill.
Maybe all of this is obvious. Just kinda thinking out loud.
