I am having an annoying Monday.
I’ve been planning to buy a car and I’ve been going to various dealers to get offers. I knew exactly what model I wanted so it was just an issue of where I’d get the best offer.
Toyota is running an incentive this month; you get a choice of two thousand dollars back or zero percent financing. I wanted zero percent financing. The incentive ended today so I needed to buy a car before today to get this.
I was careful to explain my credit history situation to the dealers before they made me any offers (short story: I have no credit history). But I was repeatedly assured “Don’t worry. We’ll make this work. It’s not a problem.”
So last Wednesday, I was looking at a dealer. They made a good offer. I had explained my credit situation and even filled out a credit application for them to submit.
I called them back Friday and told them I was taking their offer. I was again assured everything was going great. I told them I could come in that day but I could wait until Saturday. They said they were going to be really busy on Saturday so could I wait until Monday? I wasn’t delighted with this but I agreed.
Saturday, I got a call from the saleswoman (she had been off Friday) and she again told me everything was okay. I asked how the credit application had gone and she assured me everything was fine.
I was supposed to go in, sign the contract, and pick up my car at noon today. Just to make sure there hadn’t been any last minute problem, I called at 9:30 this morning and was again told by the saleswoman that everything was ready. (I called because it’s a sixty mile drive to the dealership and I didn’t want to waste a trip there.)
At 10:30, I got a call from the dealership. It was their finance manager. Ninety minutes before I was supposed to be picking up the car, he was calling me to tell me there were problems. He said he wasn’t certain I could get the zero percent and I might have to pay a higher interest rate. Keep in mind this was three days after we had agreed on the terms.
He hemmed and hawed but finally said he would work on it. But I needed to produce a whole bunch of documents that had never been mentioned before. I pointed out that I would be leaving my house in about five minutes in order to drive to the dealership at the time we had agreed to for me to pick up my car. And it was pretty unlikely I was going to pull all the documents he wanted together in five minutes. So we rescheduled for later in the afternoon.
I got everything together and made the drive. I delivered all the paperwork he had asked for. He began again to tell me that I was probably going to have to pay a higher interest rate than the zero percent we had agreed on.
I looked him in the eye and told him “We agreed on zero percent last week. We agreed on all the terms last week. I am not going to buy this car unless it’s the same terms we agreed on. Including the zero percent financing.”
He said I had to look at it from Toyota’s point of view. I told him I had made sure to raise all these issues last week and I had been told it wasn’t a problem. He said he hadn’t seen my credit report until today. I told him that I had submitted my application through them five days and it wasn’t my fault they hadn’t done anything with it.
He told me it was getting late (it was around two in the afternoon) and they probably not get a response from Toyota before they closed. He told me he would call me tomorrow.
At this point, I’m resigned to the idea that they’re going to back out of their deal. I feel they were just stringing me along to keep me from buying a car from another dealer before the incentive ended. I guess they figured they could change the terms at the last minute and I would sign whatever they put in front of me.
But I’m mad as hell. I had talked to other dealers and there were other offers I could have taken if I hadn’t made an agreement with this dealer. But now I’m going to have to start all over if they renege on me.
