Family Guy 3/4/07: Airport '07

Wow, this one was, um, noteable. Lots of fun stuff - I liked that Hugh Hefner did a cameo, and the boys sneaking on to the plane was great. My favorite bit was the guy chastising the woman for putting the oxygen mask on her kid first, and them doing the whole flight attendant schtick.

But, geez, maybe I’m getting oversensitive in my old age, but did this ep seem rather over the top nasty to women? In the first few minutes, we saw Peter say, “I’m going to do something to you you won’t remember till your forties,” Quagmire’s asian sex slaves escaping, and the news recreation with the guy beating his wife. (Though yeah, I liked the flaming, screaming bunnies.) Later there’s the dumpster baby and Quagmire’s condom “joke.” I don’t know, it just seemed like it was harsh, even for Family Guy.

This did not stop me, however, from laughing when Glen said, “Don’t worry, they’re all tagged, just get me to work.”

Yeah, I thought the incest joke was a little over the top. I won’t lie though, I did laugh. The asians escaping seemed normal for Quagmire. A fairly good episode.

And the prom dumpster baby’s song was pretty darn catchy.

The edited version of Nova was my favorite.
“Hundreds and hundreds of years.”
“Go…d Bang.”

Also, Quagmire had two great moments:

  1. Working in a giggity into his pre flight speech.
  2. His post “flight” speech to the woman he slept with (this is the condom I said I put on!)

I liked the subtle “Airplane!” references…

the Airplane music playing in the background
the sounds of a prop plane for the jet

“excuse me, i’ve got a plane to land…”

surprised they didn’t work in a “drinking problem” joke or a “but that’s not important right now” joke

surely they could have done better…

What was with the fart joke? Did it have some deeper meaning I missed?

Damn good episode. The “redneck comic” shtick was a riot, and it seguéd well with Quagmire’s loss of a job. I feel the same way as RandMcnally about the incest joke: perhaps too much and unnecessary, but I still laughed.

I’m not surprised to see Hugh Hefner showing up in Family Guy. Hef’s first ambition was to be a cartoonist, and he did a lot to encourage cartoonists in Playboy. I’ve read a number of the cartoons that have appeared in Playboy, but I have to say that while they’re very well done, the only ones I ever really enjoyed were the Little Annie Fannie cartoons by Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder, who are godlike geniuses towering over American culture like twin colossuses standing on the shoulders of twin sasquatches standing on top of twin Empire State Buildings: they’re that good.

Family Guy is a quality program in the tradition of American cartoons, so I’d be surprised if Hef weren’t a fan. Glad to see he turned up in an episode. Cartoon fans owe that man a lot.

I don’t know that they could, and don’t call me Shirley.

nitpick: it was Cosmos, not Nova

I thought this was one of the funnier episodes in quite some time. Glenn Quagmire is the show’s best supporting character, so any show with lots of Quagmire is bound to be funny. Why didn’t he have a co pilot?

The redneck version of “Cosmos” was hilarious, but I just laughed like a madman at the burning kids/burning bunnies gags.

Yeah, there were a lot of women-unfriendly jokes, but I thought the incest gag was a shot (and a harsh one) at rednecks, not women.

What the heck were the closing credits supposed to be a parody of?

I thought the Dumpster-baby song was hilarious. As was the redneck Carl Sagan. “If you look at the bones of the Jesusnosaurus rex, you will see that the Mountain Dew is the best soda ever.”

Little House on the Prairie, wasn’t it?

I wondered if maybe it was from The Flying Nun?

Little House. Laura running through the tall grass and flowers. Same music too.

I think you need to look up the word “subtle.” :stuck_out_tongue:

The only meaning is that Marle Matlin is deaf, so couldn’t hear her own farts (though as Stewie said, she should be able to feel them, and one would think smell them.) So the implication is she’s being a jerk by farting, and pretending not to know.

Oh that, no wonder I didn’t know what “fart joke” you were referring to. I think there’s another word for what she was doing (hint: Stewie refers to “those flapping down there”).

Heh, i mean “subtle” in a Family Guy context, the show isn’t exactly known for it’s subtlety, and there were so many more “Airplane!” jokes and gags they could have fit in if they wanted to be blatant

it was mainly the Airplane! theme and a couple of line references, heck, they didn’t even bother to use the White Zone/Red Zone gag

I am a cartoon fan and never truly associated Hef with cartoons/comics.

His legacy is always trumpeted as the shepherd of the sexual revolution. But you are correct.

I don’t have any real comment. I just wanted to say I enjoyed this post.

I thought they had a quick cut that showed his copilot to be that non-talking weirdo alien from Return of the Jedi who sat next to Lando Calrissian in the Millennium Falcon.

Yes they did; I’d forgotten that.
