Peter not marrying Lois fixes everything! Brilliant!
Heeeeeeeeeeeere’s Chevy!
Glad to see George finally figured out his wife was tricking him. Let’s hope that someday Fred figures out that his car will tip over when he orders those big ribs.
Was Roger the first Family Guy/American Dad crossover?
I nearly fell over at that part. Wonder if it’s retaliation for when she ignored him when the dog-walker-treadmill malfunctioned?
That was by far the best moment of the ep, seeing Jane fall out of the sky, and then that single bill, fluttering down to land on her back. Ha!
And finally understanding why there’s such animosity between Peter and the Chicken.
That damned chicken joke needs to die. I was generally enjoying the episode, with a fun (and pretty spot-on) Back to the Future parody. Then, BAM, pulled out of it because McFarlane cannot help but recycle jokes far past “clever” to “painfully stupid.”
I’m very glad there wasn’t too much of “everybody acts like Quagmire” alternate future.
“I thought we could go see Zapped because Adrian Zmed is androgynous enough that we could both get turned on by him and nobody would be gay.”
So I have two questions: Who was the person the singer called when Brian was doing his song (and what was that song)?
And background for the second question: Entertainment Weekly mentioned some sort of shout-out to them that was to be in this episode. I know they have history - after Ken Tucker gave them a bad review, Stewie snapped the neck of an EW writer in the DVD Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story, and MacFarland has acknowledged that is was indeed Tucker because of that review. But even though I paid close attention, I couldn’t figure out what they were referring to within the episode. Any one else catch it?
Rick Astley, and Brian was singing Astley’s Never Going to Give You Up.
“Hey Rick? It’s your cousin Marvin–Marvin Astley!”
In other words, the guy who recorded the song Brian was singing at the end of the dance.
And thank you both!
I remember reading a review of the episode (also Entertainment Weekly) that said there was going to be a tasteless Phil Hartman joke.
I didn’t see that. Did anyone see it or was it pulled because, as the reviewer said, it is ALWAYS too soon to rip on Phil Hartman.
It’s also a reference to Back to the Future, in which Marty McFly sings Johnny B. Goode in the 1950s- a song which didn’t exist yet- and a relative of Chuck Berry’s calls him up to tell him about the song. The entire dance scene is a parody of that film.
“I’m going to kiss Lois, and no man, woman, shemale, robot, gay robot, or sentient robot who’s curious about his existence is gonna stop me!”
President Gore? Renewable energy and no street crime? Halliburton CEO Dick Cheney shot and killed Justice Scalia and Tucker Carlson?
“And I think to myself, what a wonderful world…”
Scott Baio, not Adrian Zmed.
Death to Molly Ringwald: “I’ll be back later for your career.”
On the DVD commentaries, Seth often laments how he sometimes cannot acquire rights for a certain song to use on the show. Well, when you buy the rights to a song and then bend over backwards calling it a piece of shit, you can see how some rights-holders might be a little gun shy, dude. Not that Brian wasn’t justified in this case.
I imagine a lot of times, the rights holders couldn’t give a shit less about how the song is viewed.
Most music is owned by record companies and not the artists.
Companies just want the jack!
Some rights holders want an insane amount of money for the use of their material. The couple of seconds of Nat “King” Cole singing in Contact? $60K. Which is a freakin’ bargain compared to what Boston wanted for the use of More Than a Feeling: $500K. Personally, I’d charge next to nothing (by comparison) for any songs I held the rights to, thus ensuring nearly everybody on the planet would be exposed to my stuff.
I kept wondering, “what song will Brian play during his Marty McFly/Johnnie B. Goode moment?” Of course–Rick Astley. Brilliant. Perfect. Howlingly funny.
Roger’s cameo was priceless.
Last week’s episode had a pretty ballsy joke (mentioned here due to no thread on last week’s ep)
“And now here’s Tricia Takanawa for her slant on the subject”.
