In the family guy episode that stewie has his first birthday there is a scene, in which peter and brian are talking by the couch, then suddenly a very small covered wagon led by hoses runs by the couch, and brian chases it into the kitchen and it disappears passing through the closed cabinet door and brian hits his head and says something to the effect of damn…someday
In and of it’s self this scene is funny but is there some hidden joke or thing this is an allusion to? If there is what is it¿
It’s a reference to an old dog food commercial (Chuck Wagon, was the name of the food, I think), where a little covered wagon delivered the dog food. I’m sure someone who remembers the commercial more clearly will give a more succinct answer, but there’s a vague one for ya.
I got a beef heart today, and I’ll be eating probably half of it tonight. What are good ways to cook it? I’m probably going to saute it in a pan with some garlic and olive oil, if I get no better suggestions.
Doh! As you might have guessed, that was supposed to be a different thread… :smack:
Got my browser tabs confused.
What I wanted to say here was, when I saw that joke on FG I knew a lot the viewer would be too young to get the reference. It’s been years since those ads ran.
Yeah, they were adds for Purina Chuckwagon dog food. The wagon would come zipping around a corner, and the dog would chase it, then it would go into the kitchen cupboard, and then the dog would get fed. As near as I can remember, I would say that the ads were from the late 70s/early 80s or so.
Teehee. Speaking for myself, if I had a beef heart in the house I probably WOULD feed it to the dog. So I thought your error was quite an interesting example of how synchronicity messes with our heads.
Ugh! There are people who have never seen the Chuckwagon commercial. That’s it - I’m officially old.
Guess it’s time to shelve these pop-culture references, too:
“Mama-mia! That’s a spicy meat-a-ball-a.”
“There’s something about an Aqua Velva man.”
“Where’s the beef?”
“Ancient Chinese secret.”
“Manly yes, but I like it too.”
“Plop, plop, fizz, fizz…”
“Rich Corinthian leather.”
“You deserve a break today.” (What is it now? “Ba, da, ba, ba, baaa - I’m lovin’ it.”
Oh
my
GOD!
I’m offically old.
I got everyone of those reffrences. Ethier 24 is now middle aged, or I watched too much TV as a child.
The jingle Plop plop fizz fizz was written by Juliana Marguiles’ father. I add that for no other reason than it popped into my head as I was reading this thread.
And the “You deserve a break today” jingle was written by Barry Manilow.
Sad, I know.
“Strong enough for a man, made for a woman.” I’ve always thought that should be re-adopted by a lesbian-rights organization.
Or dating service.
I’m 32. My 18-year-old sister was in town to visit for the last five days, and we watched some Family Guy episodes on DVD. She missed probably half of the jokes due to not having the pop-culture background. The Chuck Wagon was one of them, along with the Fat Albert gang and several others I don’t recall right now.
It was a bit depressing to realize that I’m now the cultural dinosaur: “No! That’s what baby boomers are for!”
