favorite bands

Well, my favorite relatively new artist is TORI AMOS!!!

But I also like such artists as:
The WHO
Floyd
Janis Joplin
Queen
Harry Chapin

Etc.

Love,
Pippy

And now, for something completely different.

Hmmm…favorite bands at the moment are:

Rush
Eddie From Ohio
Bare Naked Ladies
Third Eye Blind
Rockwell Church
Our Lady Peace
Sarah McLachlan
Dave Matthews Band (sigh…I remember when they used to play at W&M for free. Oh well.)

“There is such a fine line between stupid and clever.” – David St. Hubbins, Spinal Tap

let’s see…currently I enjoy listening to…

Korn
Metallica
Sarah McLaughlin
the new Madonna album (almost embarassed to admit that one)
Fatboy Slim (best dance music around, imho)
Everlast
Fiona (sp?) Apple
etc

I saw that no one bit on this so I decided to. At one time I would have known for sure as I considered myself a GnR expert. Now however, I find it not worth my time to keep up on gossip and stories of the band. I cannot fathom that they cannot understand that they can buy 1000X more drugs if they got back together and recorded some new music. Anyway back to the point, Axl owns the name of Guns’n’Roses and can put together any five people and call the band that name, much the same way that George Lucas could tape four hours of a fat man playing golf and call it Star Wars. I saw somewhere that there was a 50-50 chance of this happening for Woodstock. (Axl and the new band, not the guy playing golf) Sorry for all the rambling on what could be complete BS but hay, it’s MPSIMS. I listen to mostly:
Metallica
GnR
KISS
Monster Magnet
NiN
etc…

I’ll throw in on this one.

Squirrel Nut Zippers
Dave Matthews (up till his first big release)
Kapelye (KLEZMER!!!)
Spike Jones & His City Slickers

Individuals:
Eddie South
Stuff Smith
Spider John Koerner
And one local band:
Mobia’s Trip (I know the bassist and he is FIERCE!)

Mostly I like individual songs I hear on the radio or whatever. Haven’t gotten to the point of being a fanatic about any particular bands… except maybe for Spike.

All Hail Unca Cecil, or the next best thing available!

Hey Olent - out of curiosity, which album do you consider Dave Matthews’ first big release? FWIW, I agree with you – I liked them a lot better back when I heard them in college. (And they are a much better live band than studio band.)

I’ve seen Rush mentioned a few times.

Maybe it is only me, but I can’t stomach Geddy Lee’s voice. They really, REALLY suck - REALLY!

The Who!!
Faith No More
Squirrel Nut Zippers
The Cranberries (kinda maybe)
Nirvana (sort of–I love the Unplugged album)
Guns N’ Roses (though I haven’t considered myself a “fan” since, well, there ceased to be anything to be a fan of, about 1994)

No one has inspired me to plunk down $9.99 - $24.99 for their latest release in a long, long time.

Taj Mahal. recently:Senor Blues CD
I’ve bought several CD’s lately of his, this isn’t easy to collect.Even the box set leaves your one most favorite song out.
Isn’t that how it always happens? I make tapes of “no hits”, all the tracks neverplayed on radio!

Sigh . . . all of these obscure bands . . . I suddenly feel so uncool. But around here, there’s only three stations that don’t play Country music, and those that don’t seem to only play Mariah Carey and Brittney Spears. (Shudder) And the only rock station plays only mainstream rock. The only record store is K-Mart or Wal-Mart. (Shudder) So I have an excuse for my limited knowledge of ANY cool music.

What part of Ohio would that be?Go hang around Columbus or even Dayton, they have some record stores.Up near Toledo you could head for Ann Arbor to be cool.

My favorite band is Sonia Dada. If you ever get a chance to hear them, do yourself a favor and go…they’re brilliant.

MANOS!!! I think I love you!!! Those guys KICK!!!
I second what Manos said… if ya haven’t heard them…they are a MUST LISTEN!!!
And theyhave a GREAT live show

OK, so God created me; so he has control over me; so he has no right to bitch about anything I do.

As Katie Couric would say: “Hello?”

Doobie Fucking Brothers

I can’t believe no one has mentioned them. I know there are some older folks out here. Michael McDonald, Jeffery Osborne…the best band of all time…at least that’s my opinion.

‘Shut your pie hole’-Jbird

Let’s see, looking at my CD collection:

Eric Clapton
David Bromberg
Joe Cocker
Bonnie Rait
Riders In The Sky
Brian Setzer

Ok, I like guitarists who don’t have to rely on super-distortion devices. And I like blues. Frankly, I don’t know how I came to like Riders, but I sure do.

Ranger Jeff
The Idol of American Youth

Always drink* upstream * from the herd.

I’m more than a bit partial to The Reverend Horton Heat, also Webb Wilder. And lots and lots of blues. Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, Koko Taylor. . .

Jeff, if you really like guitarists without a lot of wacky effects, then you prolly oughta give Webb or The Rev a whirl. Straight up Texas Psychobilly rock-n-roll.

Waste
Flick Lives!

River City Brass Band Ozzie Nelson (w/Harriet Hilliard) Benny Goodman Billy May Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey Spike What’shis name? Les & Larry Elgart Blue Barron Bunny Barrigan Sknnay Enos

Some really great bands/artists I like (which no one has mentioned at all) Make me feel like even more of an outcast.

Persuasions (Best acapella group ever)
Little Richard (Great music and funny too)
Wanda Jackson (Best female rockabilly)
Esquerita (Like Little Richard through a blender)
Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys (Hottest band around today-Western swing and rockabilly)
Hank Ballard and the Midnighters (Naughty stuff for the fifties)
Louis Jordan (Too cool)
Elvis (before the army, nobody could swing like the King)

I better stop. This list could go on forever.

Although they are not one of my favorite bands, the Moody Blues are without a doubt the best band I have ever seen live and I have seen more than a big handful of concerts.

I saw them two years ago and those old guys can out-rock any of these younger bands - by FAR! The show was so totally amazing that I still think about it every once in a while. Yep - out of the blue, the thought “WOW, that Moody Blue concert was awesome” pops into my head. No kidding.
