I too just tried the PB Pies, solely based on discovering them in this thread. Totally agree that they’d be better if the pb was less sweet but they are good. And huge.
Yeah, I don’t hold with the new Hostess-style, sugar-encrusted turnovers. However, in eastern PA and parts of NJ, one can still find the old-school baked TastyKake pies.
Forgot to say: I specifically dislike Little Debbie sugar wafers – so bland.
I’ve seen the largest displays of single Little Debbie products in convenience stores and gas stations.
I struck out with the 7/11 and local bodega. However, since posting I went to get a beer to have while grilling this evening and they had them. Success! Of course I also got one for my daughter and wife (who snacked on them regularly when she worked in the South Bronx).
You might try the “dollar” stores: Dollar General, Dollar Store, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, etc…
My favorite Little Debbies are Oatmeal Creme Pies and Nutty Buddy Wafers. We’ll occasionally try others, but those are the best.
The other snack cake we get regularly are Orion Choco Pies. (And not those Lotte imitations.)
My favorites are also the Nutty Buddy bars – but not if I’m driving, which is usually the case since I snag them at the gas station. They’re too flaky and the chocolate sticks to my fingers.
So, for mobile consumption, it’s Oatmeal Creme Pies or Chocolate Chip Creme Pies. Just the singles, though – the double deckers are just too much.
The only one I’ve ever had (here in Canada) are the Honey Buns. They were decent; I think we picked some up at Canadian Tire.
I don’t know if you get Hudsonville Ice Cream on your side of Lake Michigan, but these have been available on the Mitten side of the lake for a few years. I haven’t tried any of them yet, but plan to at some point. The strawberry shortcake roll ice cream looks intriguing to me.
Well, well, well! It looks like the creme pie ice cream is available at our local Meijer and Walmart locations! Not too far from me at all! Thanks for the info!
OK, I obtained 2 pints of Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pie ice cream today from our local Meijer, and will soon report on how it tastes.
I did resist the lure of all the other Little Debbie ice cream products they had on display, but it was a near thing. Especially the Swiss Roll ice cream.
Zebra Cakes followed very closely by Swiss Cake Rolls. Occasionally, I can find the Zebra Cakes that are rolled up like Swiss Cake Rolls, and that makes me very happy.
I don’t know if they have it up your way, but Blue Bell has Oatmeal Creme Pie ice cream. It’s a tad pricy, 9 bux and change at Publix, but it is an entire half gallon and sometimes you can get 2 for 1 (so get a different flavor to go with it) and it is delish. The drawbacks: it might be regional and it’s rotational. However, you won’t be disappointed. Get going.
End of commercial.
My hands-down favorite are Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies. Whenever I’m on a road trip they’re my go-to choice whenever I see them in the hotel vending machine.
Freeze em.
Delicious.
Really, it is the tastiest ice cream I’ve ever gotten from a grocery store. When I buy it, I glare at the containers from other manufacturers and think “Who would ever by you when this is avalable?”
But back to the LD discussion, I repeat:
Star Crunch.
I mean, it’s a chocolate covered rice krispy treat with caramel at the center, and not too much of any component. It’s the platonic ideal of a snack cake to me.
How can it be the platonic ideal of a snack cake when it isn’t cake?
It was pretty damn good. An overall sweet oatmeal cookie flavor was in the ice cream, along with bits of the creme pies. It was quite nice. But not mind blowing. So I won’t be indulging regularly. But perhaps I will start an exploration of the other Little Debbie ice cream products.
In the sense of “a block of compacted or congealed matter”, it is certainly a cake.
