Favorite Monkee

Ok, I need some help here. I can’t decide which of The Monkees is my favorite!! There’s…John, Paul, George…wait…that’s the Beatles…There’s Mickey, Mike, Peter and Davy. Who’s your favorite? Give me good reasons too! This is a big decision for me.

No question, I have to say Mike. He wrote the best songs, wore the cool hats, and he was a bitter, bitter man. Though Peter was quite cool since he was the druggie.

My favorite is Chim-Chim. I love the way he and Spritle would always hide in the trunk.

Alvin Garrett, as described by Howard Cosell.

Well, since Chim Chim is a MON CHE CHE(sp?), and not a MONKEE, you’re reply didn’t help me at all!!

And who is Alvin Garrett?

That would be PETER TORK

something about that name just gets my attention

in a last ditch effort at common decency I refuse to succumb to puns

I won’t say it makes me prick up my ears
or even comment on how Tork sure sounds like fun.

Howeard Cosell once quipped during a MNF game, “Look at that little monkey run!”

The player in question was Alvin Garrett, a Black wide receiver for the 'Skins.

I thought it was funny as hell, but some folks thought it was politically incorrect, since the player being referred to was Black.

OKAY.

Here is the deal.

Davy is cute, had an English accent, (which I am partial to) and was pretty much a darling Monkee. He also has a good voice, and I defy you to tell me otherwise.

Peter Tork was also cute, was the epitome of an eco-guy, which I appreciate, and he is sweet. And cute, too. I like his voice, also, but wouldn’t call it good, just worth listening to.
Michael Nesmith is intelligent, with the ability to be goofy when he felt like it. I know he is mega-smart in some ways, and I think that is great, but I mostly like him as a Monkee. So, sue me.

Now Mickey is also a cutey. However, he kmew he was a goofball, and played to his strengths. He hammed it up, more than the rest, and he is a doll.

So, there you have it. I would take any of them to dinner if I had the chance, and would probably drool. ( That is SO humiliating.)

I LOVE THE MONKEES!
Scotti

Even though I LIKED a lot of Mike Nesmith’s music, I think the most likeable Monkee was always Micky. Micky was the one Monkee who seemed to understand that he wasn’t SUPPOSED to be a real musician, just an actor playing a musician.

I think it was foolish and arrogant of Mike and Peter to audition for a silly, pre-fab bubble gum band, and try to turn it into a serious rock group!

As a parallel, I’ve read that RObert Reed (once a serious Shakespearean actor) used to rant and rave on the set of “The Brady Bunch” about how stupid the scripts were, and how his talent was wasted on such junk. On one hand, he was right, but the fact is, he was an arrogant ass to sign up for a silly sitcom and expect to transform it into a work of art.

If you don’t want to star in a stupid sitcom, don’t audition for them! Feel free to do Shakespeare off-Broadway (for a LOT less money). If you want to be a serious musician and composer, go ahead- but don’t join a teenybopper band, loved by millions of little girls, and try to turn THAT band into your vehicle.

You make me weep. I just started this thread because I couldn’t think of anything else. Although, HEAD is one of my new favorite movies. The Monkees at their best!! If you haven’t seen it, I insist that you rent it as soon as you can. Any true Monkees fan, or anyone who likes trippy movies, should definitely see this!!!

Hmmm…I would be tied between Davy and Mike, because of Davy’s singing and Mike’s cool attitude and songwriting

My two favorites are Mike and Mickey. Mike was such a smart-ass; I liked his attitude. And Mickey was just funny.
My favorite episode is where they visit Dracula’s castle.

Mickey (after various Monkees go missing): “Hey hey I’m a Monkee…”
Mike (near the end): “Here I am, Mummy-Man!”

when I was a kid…Mickey…because he was the funniest

now as a not-kid…Peter…because he seems to be the most genuine of the bunch

They all have their good qualities. I don’t think any of them are my favorite. If you want to know which one I had a crush on as a girl that would be Mickey.

I always had a soft spot for Mickey. He was (well, still is) cute, and was always so funny…I love a man who can make me laugh!

(side note)
What ever happened to his daughter, Amy? She was on General Hospital back in the 80s, did a movie or two, then faded. I rooted fro her back then because she was his daughter, and she was so darn cute. Any ideas?

Mike Nesmith, no contest!

Wrote the best songs (actually the only one in the group who wrote songs for a good portion of their career). One of his better Monkees songs is “What Am I Doing Hanging Round.” Best hat. In the title sequence, does the funny hand-clapping when Peter gets his name right.

Solo career: wrote “Different Drum,” a kinda lazy country ballad, later made popular in an up-beat rendering by Linda Rondstat w/Stone Ponies (which reversed the he/she lyrics of the song). The Stone Ponies version was later covered by the Lemonheads (who kept the lyrics the same as the Ponies–i.e., Evan Dando sang the female vocalist version).

Rich because a relative (either mother or grandmother) invented Liquid Paper.

Became a movie producer–made movies like “Tape Heads,” with John Cusack and Tim Robbins.

The tall one, with the sideburns and the hat

Martin Short. Well, he should’ve been a Monkee.

Davy!

Reasons:

  1. British accent
  2. Cute as a bug
  3. Good voice
  4. The right height for me (I was 7 years old).

You think bugs are cute?!?! I don’t think I trust your opinion. No offense.
hehehe.
But seriously, folks…I sound like Bob Hope…whoa…sorry.
Anyway, I just wanted to start a thread, and the Monkees came to mind as a subject. I am very happy about the response my very first thread has gotten! Yah!!! I did, however, have a favorite Monkee before I started the thread, though it’s interesting to find out the favorites of everyone else.
Peter is definitely my favorite. He’s cute, quiet, silly, and was way into drugs, which didn’t make him cool, except for the fact that they made him insane! wooo! Peter!! My mom may have influenced me, because Peter was her favorite as a child. Peter was also the one who stood for world peace and the safety of our environment. He was dreamy!! hehehe <sigh>
