Favorite Movies about True Love

Anyone?

I like the Princess Bride.

L.A. Story

I came in to say the princess bride

Love Actually. About all the kinds of love including true love.

High Society. It actually contains the song “True Love,” sung by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly. It was her final film, and she wore the actual engagement ring given to her by Prince Ranier. “True Love” is one of the most uninspired songs in existence; hard to believe it was written by Cole Porter.

Strange Days.

Three points, dear sir:

  1. That ending is unbelievable.
  2. Angela Bassett kicks ass.
  3. Juliette Lewis can rock out.

Stardust. Sweetest love story ever.

Princess Bride and A Philadelphia Story (mind you, my relatives include several couples who parted ways and later got back together, so it’s a very familiar tale).

Sleepless in Seattle.

I was really impressed with the French movie La vie d’Adèle/ Blue is the warmest colour, maybe not “True love”, but most certainly first/real/big/all consuming love

Make Way for Tomorrow

Love, Actually
Bringing Up Baby
City Lights

Say Anything…

What I came in to post. I love Hepburn, Grant and Stewart in The Philadelphia Story.

…but: does Princess Bride count? I thought this was about True Love, not Wuv…Twue Wuv

Most of my favorite films, if they’re about love at all, are about relationships that don’t work out, but here are four in which love triumphs:

A Little Romance (1979, U.S., dir. George Roy Hill)
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994, U.K., dir. Mike Newell)
Moonrise Kingdom (2012, U.S., dir. Wes Anderson)
When Harry Met Sally (1989, U.S., dir. Rob Reiner)

Hmm, and two of these are about 12- or 13-year-olds who run away together, while the other two are about couples in their early thirties who finally get their love life straightened out.

Punch-Drunk Love. Such a bizarre and wonderful film. Though I often wonder if much of its impact is due to having Adam Sandler not playing his usual role of, well, Adam Sandler.

Moonstruck

There are several couples in it who illustrate true love, not just the two main characters.

Truly, Madly, Deeply

Unfortunate mustache, great movie.

Concur with bells on. Making me care about an Adam Sandler character: possibly P. T. Anderson’s greatest achievement.
