Horatio Sanz
- Bill Hicks
- Lewis Black
- David Cross
- Mitch Hedberg
- Eddie Izzard
- Tim Wilson
- George Carlin
I see this list is mostly stand-up comics, but nobody has ever made me laugh like the Marx Brothers. I’m a Groucho man (hence the signature). But a list?
George Carlin
Jon Stewart
Chris Rock
Janeane Garofalo
Lewis Black
Steve Martin
I’m also really starting to like Dave Chapelle. I was a Politically Incorrect fan, though Bill Maher was a prick sometimes. Used to love Dennis Miller, but I think he’s turned into such a reactionary I can’t listen to him anymore. He’s gotten so smug, too. Some Comedy Central specials I liked: Margo Hooper, Elvira Kurt, Sabrina Matthews, Maria Bamford. There was a guy who did some great stuff about his home state (Indiana), but I forget his name. I saw Zack Galifianakis’ name up there, he’s really funny - he was Janeane Garofalo’s opener, he does his whole act while playing the piano. “I am fat Jesus.”
Most of the ones that came to my mind have already been mentioned, so I’ll just add:
Stephen Lynch.
The funniest comedy album I’ve ever heard was “The 2010 Year Old Man” by Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner. I swear, all these decades later, it still cracks me up. Mel Brooks is my hero.
Big Bad Voodoo Lou, was it Fred Stohler?
Oops, make that Fred Stoller. Skinny, big-nosed, low-keyed guy?
His IMDB.com bio lists his appearances on various and sundry sitcoms, including “Seinfeld.”
Mitch Hedberg BY FAR!!!
I’ve seen him live, and he is so wonderful! I bought his first CD and his cinamin roll incense. haha For anyone who hasn’t seen him on Comedy Central, or live, here’s his website:
Check out his stand up. Dude is hilarious.
Glad to see so many folks cheering for The Cos’ Himself. I also saw this as a young teen and just about peed my britches. I think I had to see it about 3 times running on pay-tv before I saw the whole thing, since my howls of laughter kept drowning out the jokes. I bought it last week used on VHS at a pawn shop and popped it in with apprehension…what if it was not as funny as I remembered from 20 years ago? Hooo-BOY. No worries. My wife woke up and came downstairs to find out why the heck I was cackling at the TV…
A guy that I have seen on Just for Laughs and CBC Radio who has never failed to make me laugh HARD is Daryl Lenox, a former American now living in Vancouver (assuming he is still there). He had a bit about being congested before a show and a Canadian giving him a Fisherman’s Friend lozenge, which had me in TEARS…“I tell you, 5 minutes later I was clear as a BELL. I went outside and looked up, I could see PLUTO…”
Simply because he hasn’t been mentioned yet, I’ve got to bring up Arj Barker. I’ve seen one of his performances on Comedy Central and another on Conan (I think), and the guy is one of the best current comedians I’ve seen.
And since I figure this would be the best thread to ask on, I saw one of the hour long stand ups on Comedy Central with some Canadian guy. He has a very awkward delivery (kind of high pitched, always finishes sentences with a whiney/giggly voice), and at one point he asks if there are any other Canadians in the audience. The only person to scream out is a kid in the back with bright green hair. The comedian just kind of gets depressed that this is the only person representing his country. Any ideas on who this is? Sorry for my obscurity, it’s been a while since I’ve seen it.
Wow, thank you so much! I think that’s the guy. I always like his schtick, and it has been bothering me for almost a year that I couldn’t think of his name. Thank you.
Yep, gallows fodder beat me to it. He is Fred Stoller. I love his delivery, its so deadpan…I remember his “out of control” schtick. “Thats right, I’m running with scissors. I’m out of control. You can’t stop me. Don’t even try. I’ll take you down with me. All you bastards.” funny stuff.
I’d like to help BabaBooey but you need to give me more than whiney Canadian on ComedyCentral…
Eddie Izzard currently tops my list I can watch Dress to Kill twice in one day and not get tired of it. We saw him in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg. E.I. was outstanding without overshadowing others in the cast.
Many others that I can watch over and over have already been mentioned. I’d like to add Sabrina Matthews (skirtenhosen!) and a guy whose name I just tried to figure out at comedycentral.com but got an error message.
I love Mitch Hedberg, but sometimes wish he would expand on some of his jokes. For example on Strategic Grill Locations, I think his best stuff comes at the end, when he has pretty long bits about Smacky the Frog, and the Dufranes. It just seems like he has enough fodder (in the form of random thoughts like “I had an ant farm, them fellas didnt grow shit.”) to keep ten comics happy for their whole life.
I’ll go along with some of the others, Cosby’s Himself, Brain Regan Live, Murphy’s Delerious and Raw, and of course Mr. Carlin (pretty much anything, but I really like Jammin in NY and You’re All Diseased).
I’ll throw in Adam Ferrara, Tom Papa, and Greg Giraldo, as a couple of up and comers to look for on Comedy Central.
Thanks to XM I listed to alot more comedy then I did. I find I like Emo Phillips, and of course Steven Lynch but I liked him back on the days of O&A
A guy I don’t see anymore, Wayne Cotter. He used to host a weekly comedy show. Naturally funny and very charismatic. (Kinda looked a little like game show host Gene Rayburn.)
Also, I think David Brenner is underappreciated.
Sam Kinison - may he rest in peace
George Carlin
Dennis Miller
Chris Rock
Eddie Murphy (his younger days)
Jonathan Winters was/is a nut. Always put a grin on my face.
Here’s another kid who grew up listening to his dad’s Cosby records. (How freaking awesome is “To Russell, my brother, whom I slept with”?) Great comedian, another one where you can see his expressions without seeing his face.
Comedy Central favorites:
Jim Gaffigan
Zach Galafianakis
Lewis Black (If it weren’t for my horse…)
Pablo Francisco
Dane Cook (great)
Arj Barker (a shoe-seum?)
Others:
Chris Rock (standup, not that SNL shit)
Dave Chappelle (his show was great, too bad they’ll cancel it)
Denis Leary
Kevin Nealon
Mid-seventies Robert Klein (hey, jew boy!)
