Firefly fans - How would you feel about a reboot?

It may have a significant amount of cheese, but there’s also some solid storytelling and worldbuilding there, and most impressively, the characters* aren’t idiots* - which is surprising rare in the genre. There were several times across the show’s two seasons where I immediately expected the heroes to make a stupid decision or not figure something out, and then they just… wouldn’t. That’s something to be cherished.

I wouldn’t mind an animated series based on the comic book stories - we could finally get Book’s backstory told (with a suitable voice replacement), and there are a series of Wash shorts (heh - “wash shorts”) as well.

But a reboot? Definitely no.

ETA: Actually, since much of Book’s story takes place in his youth you’d need a different voice actor anyway for that part.

Book’s backstory was told in the comics, in rather some detail.

…which is why I said “based on the comic book stories”.

:smack:

Missed that part. Still, I would take a pass on an animated series as well. Just let it remain what it is and move on. Lots of other stories in the 'Verse, and quite frankly, with what I know about Adam Baldwin, I wouldn’t want to support anything that makes him money.

I don’t think they should reboot it, but if they do I will be happy to conduct casting sessions for Kaylee.

Actually, even if they don’t reboot it I think I’d like to conduct casting sessions for Kaylee.
O.K., off to Craigslist to post an ad!

Same, on all counts. I have zero interest in an animated series, and a reboot could never capture the magic that resulted from that exact blend of casting/writing/acting. Let it be, IMO.

I’d be OK with a show from the perspective of the Reavers, made as a light-hearted comedy with singing and dancing like Cop Rock. Otherwise, let it be - anything else would just sully the memory.

[sung to a jaunty sea-faring tune]
Oh, weeeeeeee’ll take your ship,
rape you to death,
eat your flesh,
and sew your skin into our cloooooooothing!!
And if you’re very very lucky,
We’ll do it in that ooooooooorder!

They already did. Leave it to Reaver.

Right you are, universe.

Killjoys, especially, invokes a very similar feel as *Firefly *in the sense of the ‘space western’ colonies-on-the-fringe setting. Dark Matter has that vibe, too, but maybe to a lesser degree. Although Dark Matter’s larger crew makes it more similar in that respect to Firefly.

I like and watch both shows, but neither is anywhere near as good as *Firefly *was.

It failed as a show, it failed as a movie, give it up already. I loved it, I was like one of the 5 people to have watched every episode as it originally aired, not on DVD or netflix or however johnny come latelies discovered it. I went to go see Serenity in a fairly empty theater to see it opening weekend. I own the DVD of the show and Bluray of the movie, but enough already. It didn’t have enough appeal to break through, redoing it will either fail again or have to tweak things so much it will be garbage not worth watching.

Now you’re just winding us up. It failed for reasons unrelated to quality and entirely related to Fox’s scheduling dickery, something which has sunk literally dozens of shows on that network.

I’m pretty sure **TBG **mean failing only in a financial sense.

Also, even if it did fail for lack of fanbase, that situation is different now.

Everyone’s aesthetic and other objections noted and appreciated, of course, but it’s not necessarily a given that a Firefly-derivative should or would fail for any of the same reasons that the original did, or is alleged to have done.

How about same universe, 10 years forward in time. Malcolm Reynolds is still the captain. Maybe 1 or 2 other people from the original crew. Otherwise it’s a new crew and new stories.

Oh, I watched episode 1 of Killjoys - I think I’m going to like it. I do get the slight impression that they were explicitly aiming for similarity of world-texture to Firefly (the garden party scene seemed like it could easily have been cutting-room-floor footage from the Firefly episode Trash).

I mean, I can’t be complaining. This is, after, all, what I said I wanted more of.

Exactly. There’s nothing at all special and interesting about the Firefly universe. People loved the show because it didn’t constantly insult the viewers’ intelligence, epscially with characters and writing that deliberately played against cheap stereotypes and simple motivations (and in particular treating technically competent characters as people, rather than dork/incomprensible magicians).

It’s hard for me to imagine that a director/writing team could do that well would not have their own ideas about settings and especially characters. Why in the nine worlds would they want to use someone else’s background and, especially, characters? And if they’re the kind of hacks that are eager to try and coast off of someone else’s ideas, why would we want to watch what they do?

Do you have a kickstarter or other way to pre-order this yet? I’ve got my credit card out…

No reboot, no spinoff. The characters were what made Firefly what it was. I don’t think anyone is interested in redoing Firefly, anyway. As others have mentioned, the series wasn’t financially successful, and reboots are all about squeezing more money out of a sure success. Nobody is going to greenlight a Firefly project twelve years after the movie barely made back its budget, and even if they did, the actors have moved on to other things.

Face it: they took the sky.
