Ok so I have a weird FF problem where the old installation of FF would not start-up due to a boot-kit on my Eu’s computer that had been removed, but broke stuff on the way out. I googled and found the path to the profile for her FF and backed this up to an external HDD. Then I reloaded FF on a new installation of Windows 7 the old one was borked. I installed FF and then closed it, followed the same path and erased the new default profile and pasted in the previous one.
I then loaded FF. which never came up and but gave me a dialog box saying that it could not locate my user profile. I thought, “no prob - I’ll just try it a different way.” So uninstalled FF and re-installed again. Same message, so I follow the path I dropped the profile info on and deleted the profile info, uninstalled FF and then re-installed and guess what? yeah… same message… why can’t I get a fresh copy to work??
(Basically, each profile folder name is an ID that Firefox looks for. If they don’t match Firefox cries. You have to copy the contents of that folder, not the parent one with the strange numbers, instead)
Did you clear the entire AppData\Roaming\Mozilla folder? If you only deleted the specific profile folder, profiles.ini in AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\ will cause it to still look for the old, missing profile.
OK, what can I say? It’s been a very long day and you’re my hero. I’m happy to pin one more successful recovery on my belt for today’s work and leave the rest for tomorrow. Thanks so much.
