Forum Location Notices

Sometimes, after reading a long thread I don’t recall what forum I’m in. (I’m a Geezer)
Any chance we could get a permanent notice, next to where the time and date is, just saying what forum we’re in? I’ve notice a lot of people from time to time apologizing for posting in the wrong forum.
Jenny?

Hit “home” on your keyboard or go to the top of the page. Look here (below the “Fighting Ignorance” banner):

“Straight Dope Message Board > Main > About This Message Board”

Problem solved.

Forrest?

Jenny is TubaDiva’s first name.

And her number is 867-5309.

And then to get back to the post that I was reading? (Page down, scroll, scroll to far, go back… A real pain in the ass.)

Click View First Unread.

Actually it’s 24601.

If you’re at the bottom of a thread, you can also scroll down a bit further and look at the Forum Jump menu on the bottom right.

Sure, it takes some work on your part, but honestly, you’re asking for a change to the style that would significantly clutter the page to solve a problem that affects almost no one.

Click and drag the scroll bar at right to the top of the page. Continue to hold mouse button down. Read forum name. Drag the scroll bar back to where you were and release mouse button. That’s one mouse op. If that’s too much work…

Also note that the Preview Post function takes you to the forum top, where the forum name and even the thread name is. If you were posting in the wrong forum or thread, you can copy the post to the clipboard and navigate to the desired forum without losing anything except maybe a post title.

FYI, in my system, if I move my mouse outside the scroll area before releasing it, the scroll bar jumps back to the original location. So I can click and drag to the top to see the forum, and then move the cursor a bit into the main window before releasing the mouse. I actually do this sometimes.

before you move to the top of the page, by mouse or home key, take notice of where the scroll bar location is at and the message number. drag the mouse on the scroll bar to that same spot to be approximately where you were. messages are numbered to you can go exactly to where you were. you can also do a search function in your browser for #nn, where nn is the number of the message, which takes you back exactly.

What I if I want to scroll to some other part of the page (often to check a point in a post higher up) is highlight the last post I read. This makes it conspicuous so that you can easily find it again when you quickly scroll back down. You have to be careful not to click anywhere in the body of the page while doing this, though, or else the highlight is lost.

I didn’t know that worked like that. Very useful. Thanks!

This is much better than what I was going to suggest: click on the quote button of a post, which brings up the reply page with the forum name at the top, then use your back key.

Normally what I do to reposition the page on any site is what johnpost described or a slight variation.

To the OP: the only time I’ve posted in the wrong forum was when thought I was posting a reply to a Pit thread and I was actually in the related PG thread in ATMB.
