French Toast, Pancakes, or Waffles?

Alternatively, you could jazz up the bread - make french toast from a sandwich, not a single slice - AKA stuffed FT. Monte Cristo sandwiches are one variant, but you can do this with a variety of sandwich fillings - berry compote and ricotta, bananas and cream cheese, peanut butter, Nutella, lemon curd, savoury mince…

Usually cinnamon and some vanilla.

French toast is first, waffles a close second. Pancakes are just waffles that died in despair without ever laying eyes on the promised iron.

Or use raisin or Cinnabon cinnamon bread instead of white or whatever plain bread you have.

Which chain had the Silver Dollar Pancakes? I could eat a dozen of those.

IHop doesn’t offer them.

There was a similar chain restaurant near the base where my dad was stationed. We ate there a couple times a week.

^ Shoney’s? Lums?

Big Boy?

I think it was The Pancake House.

A competitor to IHop.

I see they still have the silver dollar pancakes on the menu.

I wish there was one near me. They only have a 100 franchises. Much smaller than IHop.

Has anyone on the boards actually eaten french toast served with real sour cream (and nothing sweet). That’s the way my mother made and probably my grandmother before that. I like pancakes and waffles (especially with honest maple syrup) well enough, but that way of serving french toast is a delight.

Waffles, but pancakes are a very close 2nd. I’m meh about French Toast.

If you can’t decide or want to change your vote, you’ve chosen waffle :).

I love all three: my wife does this overnight French toast that’s to die for, and I make a mean freakin’ buttermilk waffle or pancake. But waffles in a non-Belgian waffle iron are my very favorite: the contrast between the crispy exterior and the fluffy, tangy interior is just perfect.

French panwaffles.

Pancakes dead last? That’s it. Bye, Straight Dope!

Yes, whisking the egg whites to a stiff peak is part of the prep.

Waffle batter has much more oil in it (at least the recipes that I use). Trying to use waffle batter in a pan like pancakes creates an oozing mess.

My son used to ask me to make chocolate chip pancakes every weekend. I don’t even like pancakes.

This works with pancakes, too. Makes them very light and fluffy.

(Personally, I prefer my pancakes dense and moist, so I add a bit of corn oil to the batter instead of whisking the egg whites.)

I am intrigued; please continue.

Not to steal anyone’s thunder, but…

Never heard of this before! :dubious:

I have to cook, so it’s pancakes. Ain’t got no waffle iron.

Waffles, French toast, pancakes.

Pancakes are just waffles without personality.

A real man won’t worry about shoe-sole patterns on what he eats, or dipping good bread into eggs and milk. He pours out dollops of batter from a huge bowl straight into the griddle.
