It always bugged me that it seemed to have absolutely nothing to do with the movies. Am I wrong?

Well, there were post-hoc fandom attempts to connect the two (one well known - relatively speaking - example makes Lewis Vendredi the stepbrother of Pamela Voorhees and the driving force behind Jason rising between movies 1 and 2 AND makes Ryan Dallion and Steven Freeman the same person), but I kinda agree, if only because it may’ve harmed the show’s chances in the big picture.
OTOH, if the name got the show on the air in the first place, well, then it was worth it.
Pretty much the case. The show was titled The 13th Hour originally, but was changed to Friday the 13th because they thought it would be more marketable.
It lasted 3 seasons/72 episodes, so it worked out.
