I’ve lived in Israel too. But I’m talking about the principle, not the affinity group.
Oh man, I’m a big fan! I had no idea you posted here. Not a follower per se, but I really love your work. Happy birthday!
Actually I was going by the movie. So pit me, and we can discuss the relative merits of going apeshit
Preach it, brother!
And another homophobe pops up.
Yeah, the movie was crap, at least as far as historical accuracy is concerned. No screaming, no shoving, no crazy rich guys running around trying to shoot the guy who slept with his fiance.
And quite frankly, history has shown that people who DO go apeshit during a disaster usually make things a hell of a lot worse. Look up the fires at the Cocoanut Grove, or the Iroquois Theatre.
Yes, it’s an analogy. But remaining calm and focused usually leads to survival. Losing your head generally fucks you over.
Hope is not a plan. Signing norms into law so the likes of McConnell can no longer play silly buggers is a plan, long-term social engineering (“Give a hoot, don’t vote for Nazis”) is a plan. I think both are good ideas. And I never said anything about magic; I said “what are you going to do about the rest of the Republican party?” You seem hostile to the suggestion that something needs to be done about them. Why?
I don’t get why’cock Suckers’ is an insult?
What principle? That being a jerk is OK if you happen to believe in the same things I do? That we should ignore the problems right in front of us because there are bigger problems elsewhere?
Not hostile to that idea at all. I am hostile to the suggestion that either nothing or too little is being done. I am also hostile to the idea that dragging Republicans into the street to shoot them is a viable plan.
Having an idea of particular ideas you’d personally like implemented is well and good, but guess what? Trump is in the White House and the Republicans hold the Senate. You aren’t going to get those nifty legislative plans signed into law until we get them replaced. And for that, as much is being done as can be. Nobody said anything about relying on ‘hope’. Rather, I said the current actions are working on the electorate, getting better politicians elected, and working through them. Again, if the specific actions being taken are not to your liking or on your timetable, tough titties. And if our elected officials aren’t as forthcoming as to their legislative or investigative agenda as you’d like, again, tough titties.
And to absolutely put a fine point on it, the POV you are defending (the OPs) is one where ‘the plan’ is absolutely to violate democratic norms and oppose Republicans violently, even to the point of denying them basic democratic rights, to deny their essential humanity, and to incarcerate or execute them without proper trial just for holding their own personal repugnant views.
I don’t think that is what your examples show. They seem to be more like cautionary tales about leveraging connections to skate past building codes. Both of those fires would have been far less disastrous with better exits and fire code adherence. Whether the patrons went apeshit had little to do with it- their fates were mostly sealed.
They don’t prove your point. Instead, they leave wiggle room to argue in favor of going apeshit- in a situation where the theater is on fire, there is only one exit and not everyone is going to get out, maybe the guy who goes apeshit has an advantage. Maybe that’s why we evolved the response in the first place.
Even so, I’ll concede that humans have gained way more mileage out of evolving the cool, rational aspect.
asahi is a canary in the coal mine! Disregard his rantings at your peril! He’s more sensitive to authoritarianism than you folks!
The canary is supposed to give warning by passing out, not by going berserk.
Yep, asahi is more of a conure, or maybe a caique. And the coal mine is more of a flooded cavern.
Perhaps more like a duck.
An anonymous internet poster is not “the problem right in front of us,” and an insane clown US president is not “elsewhere,” no matter where you live.
Do you really think that by posting on this board, you’re doing anything to help the United States or the world? Nothing you do here has any impact on anywhere except here. No matter how much we pile on Trump, that won’t make Trump go away; however, piling on **asahi **may make **asahi **go away. So tell me, what is a more efficient use of our time?
If you want to save the world, then don’t waste your time here.
Whew, that takes a lot of pressure off.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to close this tab and go storm the Capitol. I’ll keep spending too much time in The Pit, but now I can relax… because all these clever and insightful things I’m saying DON’T MATTER.
I’m not mocking; I really feel more relaxed now.

Homophobic slurs like this are not allowed on the SDMB. Don’t use them again.
No warning issued.

No, not “just for holding their own personal repugnant views.” For kidnapping children; for abandoning Florida to the depredations of climate change; for trying to poison Americans for fun and profit.
You are conflating views with action, and conflating opinions with consequences.
The mafia-type organization doing business as the Grand Old Party is a clear, present, ongoing danger to the land and people of the United States. This is “justified revolution” time, not “believe in the system even as the system is subverted to kill you for funsies” time. We may not be able to win a violent coup; we may have better means available; but that doesn’t mean a coup would be meritless. We have to entertain the idea, in case it’s the last best hope we have.
