Galavant (TV miniseries)

Vinnie Jones who, like Jason Statham, indeed got his break in “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”, a Guy Ritchie film. He’s petty good in his limited range.

Wasn’t he also “Juggernaut” in one of the X-Men movies?

Indeed he was. He also has an arc coming up in “Arrow”. I doubt he’ll be a good guy, but who knows. Maybe someone will finally cast him against type.

Also soccer hooligan in EuroTrip.

It appears that Galavant is continuing the trend last week of the odd numbered episodes being meh while the even number episodes are excellent! I thought the whole Sid’s village being Jewish was just trying too hard for a joke. However, the pirates and their song in the second episode was just utterly brilliant! A great guest role for Huge Bonneville too (what with Downton being on the same night, I got double Bonneville!).

And once again, King Richard is the best of the main cast. Poor Jester (though he really should have had his head cut off when Richard found out about the infidelity). Btw, hilarious song by “The Executioners”.

I agree. The opening song (and Jewish village joke in general) wasn’t that funny, but the rest of it was great!

But the first half did have the Pun of the Year:

“Eunuch, what did they used to do here for fun?”
“They used to have balls.”

I dunno. I watched it the first week and I found it annoying. But the joust was hilarious and Maybe You’re Not the Worst Thing Ever was excellent, so I thought my annoyance might be due to the endless use of the theme song in the commercials.

When I watched it last night I thought the pirates were hilarious, and the king trying to be funny was clever, but I still found the overall episode - well, it wasn’t exactly annoying, but there’s something about it I simply don’t like.

It’s original, it deserves a chance, and I hope it will grow on me, but right now there’s just something about it that isn’t hitting me right.

I’m guessing the people who thought the pirate scenes were brilliant are not Monty Python fans. Seemed like a cover of some Python skits to me, right down to the “Run away, run away.”

I’ll give it one more week, but at this point, I’m mostly watching for Isabella.

Indeed I am a Monty Python fan and indeed I LOVED the pirate scene. I think being a cover of a Python skit is no vice. In fact would rather they go in that direction rather than the direction of covering Mel Brooks (which is what I assume the Jewish village thing was about).

I love people only going to give it 1 more week.

Go ahead and give it 2.

it’s a 4 week limited run

On paper Galavant seems like the sort of thing that would be right up my alley, but I’ve been pretty underwhelmed by it. I wouldn’t say it’s bad, but a bad show might actually be more entertaining. IMHO the jokes and songs are okay, but with a very few exceptions just okay, and that’s not enough to make up for the thin and boring plot.

I think this show would have been improved by being an hour long, especially since they’ve been airing the 30-minute episodes two at a time anyway, as that would have allowed the writers a little more time to tell a story. At the end of each episode I’ve felt like hardly anything has happened. I don’t think a show like this requires a particularly great or complex story, but it could use a stronger foundation for the jokes/songs.

Yeah, and as far as I could tell the entire joke was “These people are Jewish!” I get that there’s some humor in the idea that a black character comes from a Jewish village, but the show seemed to think that the mere existence of a Jewish village was itself hilarious. Maybe I missed something (I was reading the SDMB at the same time), but this fell totally flat with me.

The third episode was the weakest, but the pirates on land were quite funny in the fourth one.

Everytime the pirates talked about “girl supplies” I laughed. (It was only twice or so, but it was funny they kept bringing up girl supplies.)

smh.
Another forum I’m on has a poster complaining that the fact that the show has two people of color in the major roles, and several people of color in lesser roles, means that they aren’t doing enough to have diversity on the show. I don’t know what they would prefer, that everybody in a show about Medieval Europe be POCs?

Tim Omundsen is saving this, and by far the best part. Agree with the above that say that his right-hand man (Juggernaut) is pretty entertaining too.

It’s something different, and it’s fun. It has some misses and some hits. Two thoughts on the last episode…

There definitely seemed to be the “Now let’s do the Mel Brooks part” (American Jewish culture in the middle ages! Haw!) and the “Now let’s do the Monty Python part” (pirates who aren’t especially piratical)… but then you’re going back over this sort of ground, SOMETHING’s gonna remind you of Robin Hood Men in Tights, Holy Grail or parts of A History of the World, as it’s a similar idea and riffing on the same genre.
Also, did anyone else feel like there was a really jarring edit in it? They were getting ready for the feast with the squire and Isabella… and then it was the next day and they were out walking along? Felt as if we missed something.

the ‘end credits’ - by that point, the knight was off his high horse and the rest of the party was not needed - one also assumes that Sydney was over talking to his mom and dad and ‘being honest’ (based on the previous scene).

had there been a week between the episodes, you wouldn’t have even thought about it.

(and totally agree with the rest of your post - but I have to give high marks for the Executioner’s Ball)

I’m also among those that were glad to have watched the first two episodes recorded, so I could fast forward through those REALLY ill-advised singing promos for shows.

Also, if you’re going to do something obnoxious and repetitive to draw a lot of attention to your promo for an upcoming show… best be offering something better than “Special Guest Star Kirstie Alley!!!”

And that the pirates wanted the girl supplies, to which Galavant replies (basically) “What? Why?”.

Yes, talk about obnoxious and repetitive…
