Galavant (TV miniseries)

I love a good Wilhelm scream.

Your guess would be wrong. I love Monty Python, and I thought the pirate scenes were inspired. And very Pythonesque.

Weird Al was wasted in his guest appearance, but I liked Ricky Gervais’ appearance.

Still love it.

OK, I’ll give it one more week.

Hey hey, we’re the Monks!

Yes, it will come to its conclusion when the frogs alert the crows that the eve is upon us.

So, nine o’clock, then.

I really enjoyed both episodes this time (usually the 1st of the two has been meh for me, but the singing monks were very fun)! I have this feeling, though my gf agrees, that in the end, Galavant and King Richard may join forces to take down the evil Queen. That’d be quite a nice reversal of fantasy tropes.

They can do a duet of “maybe you’re not so bad after all”

OK, so I didn’t care that much for it the first week, but stuck with it, and it grew on me a bit. Still not my all time favorite, but worth watching for four weeks.

That being said, WTF was that last 10 minutes or so?!?

Did I miss something? I recall this being advertised as a four-week special event, not half a season of a show that may or may not be renewed at some point. And the way everything sort of collapsed at the end seems to suggest that they planned more episodes, but got told somewhere around filming episode 6 that they were only getting two more episodes rather than however many that they planned.

It actually felt to me like they went out of their way to not wrap things up in the final episodes, after it repeatedly looked like Galavant was going to save the day. I guess it’s to the show’s credit that it managed to surprise me this late in the game, but I too was under the impression that this was a miniseries and would thus have a real ending.

I did enjoy Daisy from Downton Abbey singing gleefully about poisoning the nobles.

I enjoyed that they were so ballsy and left it open for a Season 2. The showrunners didn’t plan to make a “4 Week Special Event”. ABC decided to do so. After all, each “episode” actually consisted for 2 half hour ones.

Would love to see a Season 2 and enjoyed how they left it open for one. If there isn’t a Season 2, well then that can be reconned another skewering of fantasy tropes I guess ;).

Some really good songs in this one and quite amusing misdirection. Galavant and King Richard getting drunk and sneaking around the castle was hilarious!

Another Timothy Omundsen fan here. It was worth watching just for his song last night and his “he’s adorable!” about Prince Harry. However, I was so sleepy that I am not sure if I missed stuff by dozing off for a few seconds or if things just happened too fast. I am not sure why Gareth released the King and Galavant and then went back and let everyone else but the squire leave. I’m not even sure how Richard was deposed by his brother. What did I miss?

What was missed:

Gareth was Richard’s friend, so he sent Richard on his way (with pirates) and made Galavant protect him. Kingley was actually disposed of by the Queen, when he tried to kill Gareth for letting Richard go - the Queen wasn’t all that fond of Kingsley and offered Gareth the King’s chair.

Yeah, that was a pretty slam-bang sequence of events in the final episode(s). I completely lost track of who made what deals to align with whom.

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I’m not even sure I understand the final status.

The King and Queen had invaded Valencia, which is the location of the castle that most of the series was set at.

The running gag was that Valencia’s population had been completely decimated by the invasion and subsequent executions-as-amusement.

So at the end, Gareth sent the King and Galavant back to the King’s original still-presumably-healthy Kingdom, while the Queen and Gareth ended up ruling a devastated and hostile Valencia.

I guess they might still have the Jewel, after being the prime mover of the plot for the first half of the series, it wasn’t even worth a mention in the second half.

I believe Gareth’s thinking is the following:

The original Kingdom presumably is fine with King Richard. Kingsley and the Queen would have no idea where Richard and Galavant are, though I’d imagine they would figure out that the King may want to go back home. I’d imagine in a Season 2 (if it ever comes to pass) would be a scramble as to the first person to get back to original Kingdom.

Any chance this actually gets renewed? I don’t think the ratings were all that good.

The ratings were definitely poor. But if they want to do another “4 Week Special Event”, it could fit gaps in the schedule, whether its January or in the Summer.
