Game of Thrones 3.09 "The Rains of Castamere" 6/2/13 No book spoilers

Adultery with and by a queen consort is high treason. Historically this has been the case with just about every hereditary monarchy in history and* is still the case in the UK* (though it hasn’t been a hanging offence since '98).

Arya spared the pig farmer’s life.

Are you watching a different show than the rest of us? In this very episode ALONE we have:
-Jon refusing to kill an old guy who was 100% dead anyhow
-Arya stopping the hound from killing a different old guy
-Osha, who you may recall was captured with a group of people trying to KILL BRAN, describing how well the Starks treated her

And that’s in ONE EPISODE.
Your claim is completely groundless.

Not killing her would have made Cat an oath breaker.

You seem to have a very Machiavellian sense of morality. Do the ends justify the means?

In my estimation, pushing a child out a window for discovering your incest is worse than what Cat did. She took a hostage in order to attempt to prevent the killing of her son and her king. When he was killed anyway, she was true to her word and she carried out the action she had threatened. It was basically a battle situation – Lord Frey had endangered everyone in the room by turning the reception into a battleground/slaughterhouse. Lady Frey was caught in the crossfire. Throwing a 9-yr old boy out a window 10 stories up for catching you in your incestuous infidelity is much much worse.

Sounds good; it would add a bit of po-mo cred to his literary reputation.

And as far as the filmed version is concerned, he’s ready to go: he’s got the beard. ^_~

It’s interesting to speculate what Robert’s reaction would have been had Ned gotten to him in time with proof of Cersei and Jaime’s incest.

His initial impulse of course would have been to kill both of them and possibly the children, but this would have had major practical considerations:

  • His entire realm knows he is a cuckold, and not just once but many times and for years
  • It would mean killing the only two children of any consequence to the richest and most powerful lord in his realm and one who probably would not let himself be taken quietly or let his children be unavenged
-Tywin could also bankrupt the realm in a split second by demanding repayment of the gold they owe him; if Robert killed him and cancelled the debts it would mean that nobody would ever again loan money to the crown and they’d be broke within months.

On the other hand, not to do so would mean a bastard would take his throne. His best bet would have been to annul the marriage and declare the kids his but illegitimate, but that doesn’t mean it’s what he would have done.

He wants his kids to marry up. The Freys are new money, so ancient houses like the Starks and the Tullys look down on them. Plus, Lord Walder himself already had a nasty reputation, partially because he intentionally showed up late for the battle during Robert’s Rebellion. But I think the main problem is that there’s just so damn many of them. We’ve met at least four of Walder’s sons. His heir and a bastard (both old men themselves) in season one and the two younger guys who negotiated the wedding deal with Robb then participated in the stabbing at the wedding. Surely you remember that nice young man with the limp who stabbed Talisa in the womb?

Also :

  • Ned outlawed flayings in the North
  • Treated Theon, his hostage, as well as his own sons, taught him to fight and so on
  • Threatened to resign as Hand if the Council went ahead with the planned murder of Daenerys
  • Warned Cersei that he was about to blow the lid on the incest thing, so that she’d have an honourable out and/or hasty retreat while she still could
  • Kat refused to let Lysa just throw Tyrion down the Eyries’ pit (though that one is less benevolent than practical)
  • Wouldn’t let Brienne commit suicide-by-guard
  • Robb let Talysa patch up the Lannister wounded, using up his own army’s supplies in the process (whether that was compassion or trying to get in her pants is left as an exercise to the reader)
  • Arya gave Jaqen et al. an axe so they wouldn’t burn alive, even though she was scared of them (one had even threatened to rape and kill her)

As for Jon, he’s just a huge softie all around. Wouldn’t lose his virginity for fear of birthing a bastard, defended Sam from the bullies, spared Ygritte… does that thing with his tongue, too.

Ned Stark committed adultery too
[/QUOTE]

We don’t know that. There are theories that Jon is actually the son of Lyanna and Raegar. Beyond that, Ned never actually said Jon was his and pointedly avoided answering any direct question on the subject.

This is Robert though, everyone involved would lose their heads before he put any thought into any of those other things.

I’m sure you will if you hit the county fairs and swap meets on a regular basis.

I’m a big fan of the Jon being Robert’s son theory, but the last thing Ned said to him before they parted ways was I believe “You’re my son by blood, if not in name.” I suppose he could have meant "we’re blood related and I think of you as my son. "

In show, is there a reason why Ned would be covering up Jon’s parentage?

Kobal2 and Push You Down, isn’t that bookstuff? Or at least fan speculation based on bookstuff rather than showstuff.

Push You Down’s quote is from the show, but I don’t know about the rest.

The only reasons I can think of off the top of my head are:

  1. He’s protecting the mother’s identity because it would cause a scandal, which would be the case if the mother impregnated by Ned was in fact a highborn lady currently married to another Lord.

  2. He’s protecting the identity of BOTH parents , for reasons similar to #1, except that Ned wasn’t the father, but rather was sheltering the child for the sake of the (probably) illicit couple. This would also be the case if it turned out that Benjen Stark was Jon’s father, which would have indicated that Benjen had broken his vows and would be sentenced to death.

  3. The mother was wolf-ugly and Ned was just plain embarrassed to admit that he slept with her at all.

What are you talking about? Robb Stark was attacked for being Robb Stark.
I feel like Brienne is going to take this whole thing badly.

I think the Starks started with five wolf puppies. One was killed at Joffrey’s behest, and one was killed last night. Are the other three still alive?

I’ve only watched the show…and my speculation comes only from that. I would not knowingly do douchebag stuff like book spoiling or dressing up my book spoilage as “fan-speculation.”

His parentage on one side is a mystery. Jon is one of those “heroes journey” type characters so it is not uncommon for there to be a secret heir type character in a fantasy story.
It’s just fun specualtion and story guessing.

Six, there was a runt of the litter that Jon Snow got.

Arya chased Nymeria away because she was worried she’d be killed. They killed Lady (Sansa’s) instead. Robb’s wolf (Grey Wind) was killed.

Jon’s wolf Ghost is still somewhere north of the wall. We don’t know what happened to him.

Brann and Rickon’s wolves (Summer and Shaggydog) are still with them.

Six, one for each Stark and one for Jon Snow. We saw Bran and Rickons during the fight with the wildlings and Jon’s was somewhere north of the wall, Arya’s hasn’t been seen since she shooed her off to protect her.
