Game of Thrones 3.10 "Mhysa" 6/9/2013 No book discussion

Sansa was unfamiliar with the word shit, having probably only heard it a couple of times and misheard it as “shift”, it’s a way to demonstrate her naivety.

I’m pretty sure the Direwolves have been mostly CGI ever since they were adults - at least, any time they need to be shown in scale with humans they are. And they’re shown as being pretty big - about chest high at the head.

Here’s a picture of “Ghost”

Actually, I don’t know about season 3, but in 2 at least cgi was kept to a minimum. They greenscreened real wolf-like dogs then just scaled them up before putting them in the shots.

Exactly. Although he mentions the consideration, so it’s possible he thinks about it a tiny bit.

This episode was full of little background details; two ladies being delighted by Podricks appearance, the hound munching on some stolen lunch while Arya stands all thoughtful.

Also, was Varys’ fuck-off gift to Shae his own idea, or did Tyrion set him up to it?

Those are the (made up?) names of the passersby that were snickering at Tyrion as he walked alongside Sansa.

(finishes reading) Heh, Dany quoting The Life of Brian was a nice touch.

Bear in mind that Tywin is a practical man with a good understanding of economics. He probably realizes that living peasants are a medieval economy’s chief cash-generating asset; no point in throwing them away needlessly.

Tyrion was noting the names of the people who were snickering at him and Sansa, on an Arya-style shitlist.

Long-term, I’d say you’d be better off on Tyrion’s shitlist than’s Arya’s, but this story could go anywhere.

I’ll never forgive them for the opportunity they squandered to have a Shay “Diamonds Are Forever/Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend/As Long As He Needs Me” mash-up fantasy music video sequence.

Pepper Mill just came up with this:
What is Catelyn Stark had been played by Mary Tyler Moore as Laura Petrie?

“Oh, Robb!”

Well, Shae made it clear that she would only leave if Tyrion asked, so the fact that Tyrion didn’t follow up on that tells me that it was all Varys. Varys knows that Tyrion is being led around by his dick and not his brain when it comes to Shae.

They use Northern Inuit Dogto play the direwolves.

I don’t know how much scaling they need. They are pretty massive in real life. I used to pass one on my way to work every day that I assume lived at Le Pain Quotidienmore on West Broadway in Lower Manhattan. It would just lay there all day just being really really big, snacking on a giant dog dish full of bread.
Also are they CGI in that they create wireframe and textured animated models or are they just composite videos to make real dogs look big?

I feel that it was Varys’ idea. He’s more of a big picture guy.

OK, I’m slow.

The Stark sigil is the dire wolf.

Dire wolves are extinct. (At least they are IRL, and IIRC they were thought to be extinct in the show.)

Varys seems to think that the little (no pun intended) people are going to be making power plays in the near future. Guys like Littlefinger and Tyrion, who don’t have any real power at the moment. I’m curious and hopeful that this is true, because that will make for one interesting storyline.

I think in the pilot episode, when they found the pups, someone said something about how there are no direwolves south of the wall, to which Jon says, “Now there are five.”

So not extinct, just…endangered?

What are your thoughts on The Hound grabbing a Stark banner when he and Arya were in the midst of that melee? Was it to keep any remaining Stark people from attacking them? A souvenir for Arya?

It wasn’t a Stark banner, it was the Frey’s banner. Definitely to avoid being attacked.

I thought he was using it as a lance.

And rarely seen south of The Wall or anywhere near humans.
