Game of Thrones 5.03 "High Sparrow" 4/26/15 [Show Discussion]

Varys said Littlefinger would see the country burn if he could be king of the ashes.
What I did not understand is if the priestess who was eyeing Tyrion was a follower of the Lord of Light or a different religion. She seemed to be but then called Dany the savior, while the Red Woman is convinced the Lord of Light favors Stannis.

Definitely a Red Priestess.

I don’t see any reason to believe that a particular savior is part of their doctrine.

They all seem to latch on to someone, Thoros had Lord Beric.

Those aren’t mutually exclusive. Melisandre could be using Stannis as a means to an end.

Did Thoros think Beric was the Lord of Light or was he just the leader of their group of outlaws? I always thought the latter. I don’t recall and messianic talk from Thoros about Beric.

No, nothing like that. Just meant each priest seems to have someone they stick with or support.

We know next to nothing about the internal organization of the Red Priestess religion. Maybe the official dogma is now that Dany is the savior, but the news just hasn’t made it over the narrow sea and up to the wall where Melisandre currently is. Or maybe Melisandre totally knows that, but is keeping it a secret for now for whatever reason. Or maybe she’s an apostate at some level. Or maybe the priestess in Volantis was an apostate.

Not enough information.

(Although Throros certainly did not seem to think that Beric D was a savior or anything of that sort.)

I just discovered Lena Headey, who plays Cersei, is quite extensively tattooed. I wonder if that’s why she has not shown much skin in the show.

I think they would just digitally erase them like they did for her in the 300 movies.

Yeah, but that costs money. Probably cheaper to keep her in long sleeve, high backed dresses.

Which certainly explains why HBO was so coy in shooting that scene. I doubt the actor was even on scene the shot of Margaery sitting up naked from behind. And I’m pretty sure Tommen is even younger than his actor; IIRC he’s only 13 or 14.

Yes, outright chattel slavery is prohibited in Westeros; thought a lot of things that look like slavery to modern viewers (eg serfdom or debt bondage) are fine. Also normal rule in Westeros is that any man (or at least any nobleman) sentence to death can go to the Wall instead; Jorah just fled the Seven Kingdoms instead.

Plus Daenerys the Dragon Queen is likely to resonate a lot more with audiences in Essos than Stannis Baratheon. In fact the average peasant/slave/etc in Essos probally doesn’t have a clue to the latter even is. I wonder how significant it is that this Red Priestess was portrayed by an East Asian actress; we haven’t seen anyone East Asian performers before on the show; have we?

A northman always has the option of going into the nightswatch, no matter the crime. It was an “out” offered to Theon by Maester Luwin when he took over Winterfell and presumably killed the Stark boys. Of course Ned would have let Jorah take the black, Jorah chose exile.

I don’t think we know that for sure. I don’t think we’ve seen any evidence that you can commit any crime, no matter how vile and horrifying, and then say “oh, no, wait, don’t chop my head off, off I go to the Wall”.

The actress who plays Nymeria Sand this season (Jessica Henwick) is half Singaporean Chinese.

It was suggested that Tyrion could take the Black if he was found guilty of regicide. Unless someone was just uncontrollably violent I think it would probably be an option for them. Hell, in season 2 they were taking people to the wall that were do bad they had to be locked in a cage the entire trip.

alphaboi, apparently in season 1 someone references Tommen being 8. I’m not sure of the chronology, but even 5 years seems like a stretch. I’d probably chalk that up to a continuity error.

Actually that situation works entirely against the point you’re trying to make. There was a special deal made between Jaime and Tywin that if Tyrion admitted guilt, he would be allowed to take the black. If it was just automatically the case that if Tyrion had been found guilty he would have been allowed to take the black, no such deal would have been necessary.

Funny as ever - thanks!

I’m so glad Jaqen is back; great character. Here’s a YouTube recap of his past adventures with Arya: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y31RoHC15pM

I also liked the moment when the High Septon burst in on the Small Council and named them all except Maester Mengele, whom he didn’t know. “It doesn’t matter,” the maester said. Gotta admire that kind of humility…
