Game of Thrones 6.07 "The Broken Man" 6/5/16 [Show Discussion]

I was hoping that Ian McShane would last for more than one episode.

I’d have to agree that both Arya and the Waif seemed incredibly incompetent for people who had received rigorous Faceless Man training: Arya for wandering around drawing attention to herself in broad daylight and seemingly being caught completely off-guard, even though she knows the Faceless Men are going to be looking for her; and the Waif for not killing Arya quickly and cleanly even though she apparently had taken her completely by surprise. (It’s possible that the Waif, contrary to Jaqen’s orders, was trying to make Arya suffer, but a trained assassin should have been able to make sure of the kill.) It certainly makes me think that all is not what it seems.

“Get me to the Braavosi ER, stat!”

May he rise like a phoenix and feed to the pigs the cocksuckers who slaughtered his flock.

Looking closer at the frames of Arya being stabbed, the first one went in shallow, as it hit something, perhaps armour. The second slid across and went in sideways, it was wide, not deep.

Could be armour and pig’s blood. From mummers.

I believe Arya has a plan, especially since she knew that old woman had to be a Faceless Man since she interacted with that very same face during her tour of the faceless hallway. This is the best pic I could find, but she actually walks up to the old lady face and touches it.

This, to me, shows she knew exactly who the “kindly old lady” was and we were given unreliable (on purpose) information during the attack scene.

Foo shur.

I disagree. The first is plunged in straight and pulled quickly, followed by a long spurt of blood. The second looked to me like it was plunged in straight and deep, up to the hilt, then twisted.

I really wish he had been shown eating canned peaches with authorized cinnamon with his flock.

Good question. Where did the money come from?

Looks shallow, then sideways to me…

Anyway, I’m sure we’ll find out, in two weeks time, cos they always leave cliffhangers like that for at least 2, perhaps 3 episodes.

Seems to me this is a common strategy of the show:

Episodes and episodes of going nowhere. Fake death. 2 episodes. Not dead.

Of course, some, like Danerys, involves seasons of going nowhere.

I had heard that he was only going to be in one episode but I was hoping for more than this. All he does is talk some philosophy with The Hound. I was hoping they’d have his character show up, do something bad-ass and then go out in a blaze of glory.

It seems like a waste of such a great actor.

I agree. Both strokes, especially the second, appear to have gone in straight and up to the hilt. Arya doesn’t seem to be faking as she crawls up the steps, even though she is probably out of sight of witnesses.

On the other hand, Arya’s reacting with surprise and terror rather than instantly going on the defensive seems to belie all her training, as does the Waif’s walking off without verifying the kill.

I don’t there is any doubt that, who ever it is, was actually stabbed. When she crawls out of the water, she grimaces as if in pain, yet there is no one there to see it if it is a performance. And she looks truly shocked to see the blood on her hands, which would be unlikely if she had some kind of blood bag.

A girl will not answer without her lawyer present.

“Oysters, Clams, and Cockles!”

And maybe she dove for that sack of Hound loot.

A girl should not answer questions from strangers on message boards.

But no one blinks an eye when we tell about the Mosquitos, deer flies, horse flies.

“the night is dark and full of terrors” takes on a whole new meaning

After re-watching the clip of the attack, here’s what I think is happening:

First knife strike clearly goes in and draws blood, but doesn’t necessarily puncture anything vital.

Second knife strike goes in to the hilt, but there’s no blood. The Waif seems like she’s twisting to make it go in further, I suspect because it’s meeting resistance from a bag o’ coins. Arya’s expression during the second stab could easily be surprise at the lack of new pain, followed by the realization that she still has a chance to escape if she dives off the wall.

So, when she emerges at the staircase, she has only a single puncture wound – something she ought to get looked at since blood loss is a thing, but not something inevitably fatal.

Draws blood, yes. But what kind of blood? Animal blood?
Or perhaps packets of fake blood. The kind you’d find in the backstage of a play.
