Agreed, although to me it was the aftermath that really pushed it into the realm of bad TV, I may be in the minority in saying that I don’t necessarily believe that the stabbing and canal bath should’ve been fatal, though I’m no maester I am pretty sure stab wounds to the torso aren’t something that you can quickly sleep off with some soup and painkillers, or be in any condition to be fleeing and fighting the Waif-1000.
It sure was convenient that her only friend in the city knew surgery, just like an actress wouldn’t. Reminds me of when you were kids playing cowboys and indians there would always be one little shit who pulls stuff out of their arse and say they’ve got special wizard armor on so they can’t be shot.
YMM(and I guess does)V on this but to me they made it very obvious with Lemoncloak’s parting comment. One of the only other times we hear that phrase is Mel saying it to Renly whom she shortly thereafter murders with a smoke vagina assassin since he opposes who she thinks her Red God has chosen. Otherwise, why even bother with the sept, or hanging the septon from it? Why bother with Ray’s dialogue mentioning the Seven, or the Hound reminding us that the Bw/oBs follows the Red God? Guess we’ll see if it comes to anything, it well may be they just needed to get the Hound back to killin’ and the whole Brotherhood thing is just a means to do that.
Daenerys may be in need of ships, but she is not in need of a king. Also Euron seems to think once he marries her he’ll get to rule jure uxoris like the husband of the odd Westerosi heiress does; she’s not going to go along with that. At best she’d leave him to his own devices in Iron Islands, more likely he’d end up a king consort sitting silently in a chair by the Iron Throne while she rules, not even being able to pass his name onto their children (& also being cuckolded).
Well we’ve met a few real people, that doesn’t really tell us much about what their stereotypes are. Lord Umber for example was a lot closer to that version of the Starks, which is probably just a stand in for “northerner”.
Except that when Melisandre has sacrificed people because they wouldn’t convert to the Lord of Light she’s burned them. Maybe that wasn’t convenient for most of the sept members, but you would think that if the rogue Brothers were killing them for religious reasons they would have burned at least Brother Ray instead of hanging him.
Finally got around to seeing it. I was so tickled (and relieved !) that all the crazy theories about Arya were immediately dismissed with “nope, really was Arya. She got shanked. The end.”
Also, “You’re shit at dying, you know that ?” is probably one of the best lines the series has delivered so far.
I did too, but yeah. Plus it’s pretty consistent with his fantasy-communism ; after all the whole point of trial by combat existing is/was so the ruling class can/could do whatever the fuck it wanted, *especially *when it comes to oppressing the proles beyond any laws or established customs. If he really wants a more egalitarian society, abolishing it is a good first step. If what he wants is all the power all the time, it’s **also **a good first step
I just learned something interesting—the Anglo-Saxons didn’t have trial by combat. It was something that only the Franks and a few other Germanic tribes did.
Both. The preferred method of execution is burning, because it’s an offering to the Lord of Light. In “The Lion and the Rose” in the fourth season, Melisandre burns three people who won’t convert (including Stannis’s brother-in-law) as an offering to the Lord of Light.
Mance Rayder’s death is probably more of an execution, since he’s not given a chance to convert. Shireen’s is definitely a sacrifice.
This was explained, by the actress, that she used to date a lot of “bad boys” and get pissed at them and then stab them and then feel bad and then stitch them up. Apparently she had a lot of practice.
I would put scare quotes around “explained”. There must be something about knives in Braavos, that they only inflict non-fatal abdominal wounds. They inject antibiotics, or something.
Trail by combat is only available to the highborn, so it has nothing to do with the proles. We’ve only seen trial by combat between members of ruling houses, knights, or their designated champions. (Bronn is lowborn, but he was acting as champion for Tyrion.)
In a dispute with the highborn, I don’t think the proles have any rights. We’ve seen them be slaughtered with total impunity.
Dunno if the History and Lore DVD features are considered spoilers here or not, but in one of them Bronn narrates that Trial by Combat and Trial by Seven are only for the highborn, for everyone else it’s the dungeons, the chopping block or The Wall.
I think the point was that in our history, trial by combat was used as a way for the nobility to screw over the common people. A noble wrongs a commoner, opts for trial by combat, and hires a mercenary. It was essentially a “pay to win” justice system, which runs roughshod over the poor. Even though we haven’t seen that happen in GoT, it was probably the main reason trial by combat existed. It’s consistent that the High Sparrow would want to have it abolished. The timing was clearly a political move to screw over Cersei and Loras, but it probably would have happened anyway.
I don’t think the lowborn would have any recourse to the law if wronged by a noble, more likely they have to suck it up and if they take it upon themselves to dispense justice are executed or send to The Wall.
Do you have any evidence for that? It seems that trial by combat was mostly used between people of the same social class. I doubt that a noble would have to resort to trial by combat in order to avoid justice if he had wronged a commoner.
Any other system was “pay to win” also, and probably less expensive for a noble anyway. In a trail by jury the noble would hire a lawyer and the poor person wouldn’t be able to afford one. He’d be screwed anyway.
As has been said, in the GoT world trail by combat is only available to the highborn. The lowborn are not entitled ask for trail by combat in the first place.
Am I the only one that’s pissed off that we didn’t even get to see the showdown between the waif and Arya? Or the Blackfish’s death scene? Did they run out of money or something?
Is next week going to start with Tyrion saying “Wow, it sure was impressive the way Drogon flew around and burned all those Sons of the Harpy ships to the ground like that.”
