Game of Thrones 6.10 "The Winds of Winter" 6/26/16 [Show discussion]

By the way, speaking of the music here’s the score from the first ~10 minutes of this episode. Haunting and lovely and so perfect. I think the score was absolutely a big part of what made this one of the best episodes of television that has ever aired. It’s also received incredibly high ratings on IMDB, with an arithmetic mean of 9.9 (currently 94.2% of 46,343 votes giving it a 10/10 rating). Episode 9: “Battle of the Bastards” was also rated very highly with a mean of 9.8 (92.7% of 106,489 votes giving it 10/10).

While this season definitely had its flaws, I think these episodes more than make up for it and make it one of the best seasons yet.

I noticed on Wikipedia that these last two episodes were directed by the same person (Miguel Sapochnik) who directed last season’s excellent 8th episode, “Hardhome.” I hope they continue to use him for some of the ‘big’ episodes.

People on Reddit have been clamoring for him to direct the entire rest of the series. I’m sure it won’t be that way, but it would be nice.

I think the 9th episode being 9.8 is very silly - I don’t even think it ends up making the top 10 of the series. The direction, stunts, cinematography, and effects were great, but it was nowhere near an all-time great. This episode is much more deserving of high ratings, although 10 is a bit much. That’s Ozymandius-tier.

The marriage would be bigamous and thus invalid. Rhaegar was killed at the Battle of the Trident, and his wife was killed during the Sack of King’s Landing after that. So Rhaegar would have been married at any time he was with Lyanna.

No they weren’t. Sansa treated Jon probably much worse than Caitlyn did and Caitlyn treated him like shit. She even apologized to him for they way she treated him. Jon was present but not treated like family when it mattered. The boy Starks and Arya had more interaction with Jon. Now Jon was close to Arya and I definitely think if it was Arya/Jon…yeah definitely gross for them. (although GRRM did say originally early versions of Arya and Jon had romantic feelings for each other)

Catelyn*, and are you just inferring that based on what she said at their reunion? I’m not really sure there’s evidence that she treated him that badly, other than the way he was outcast in general (“The Stark family would sit up here at the feasts, and I’d sit way down there”).

You may be right that we’ll see Gendry again, but Gendry is a bastard and bastards aren’t legally the rightful heirs to anything. Of course, as we’ve seen in recent episodes, being a bastard isn’t such a big deal if you have an army. But Gendry doesn’t have anything other than good looks at this point. Even if he was widely known to be Robert’s bastard, that wouldn’t amount to anything in itself.

Yeah, I’m basing my information off the show… that we’re discussing.

Wow, just watched the episode and too much stuff to say right now, as it’s late, but man I feel for Tominimum. Sorry bastard.

Just when things seemed like they were going his way, or at least the way of the High Sparrow who was brain noggin him, was wantin’, and then she lit the wild pyre. Brutal AF mate! Jimminy McKrikies!

But poor Tormalean had no recourse against the savagary of his own mums satanism. He had the "fuck you"s to give out but not the "you’re cool"s.* So little homey had to Audi S8, late out and walk his ass to Splatter Town. Ain’t that a scrolly yo.

Dany, by the way, conquered the cities of Slaver’s Bay, which I’m thinking were probably pretty wealthy. I feel that it’s entirely possible that she could, you know, buy supplies. So “logistics” may not be such a problem (or plot-hole) after all.

…and, furthermore, I can’t imagine Varys &/or Tyrion neglecting to mention that unconditional surrenders are traditionally accompanied by chests of treasure, and I feel sure that Dany would be happy to see the profits of slavery funding her war of [del]conquest[/del] liberation.

But nothing from the show indicates she treated him horribly, or “much worse than Catelyn”, or wasn’t raised as his sibling just because she made some offhand comment apologizing (while laughing) when she finally saw him again. Don’t know what you’re getting all sarcastic about when your point is unsubstantiated.

The Dothraki seem to be based on the medieval Mongol tribes, and it gets very cold in Mongolia (some places have a -30 C average in January). So they might be better used to it than we think. Is there any in-show indication of how cold it gets in the Dothraki Sea?

That’s funny, because I was disappointed that he didn’t sentence and execute her himself. I very much expected him to do just that.

May I refer you to episode 1 this season? Yuck!

Oh, but that was the best part!

Deserts often get cold overnight, so being “desert people” doesn’t mean the Dothraki have no idea what cold weather is like. Rugging up is unlikely to be a completely unfamiliar concept to them.

…and here I thought it was a reference to all the gorgeous embroidery Cersei wears  .

Surely the logical thing is for them to first ship for Dorne or The Reach, and make their way North from there, through fertile, warm lands that can keep them supplied by their own allie, building up a defended logistical supply tail as they go.

I mean, what do people think they’re going to do? A D-Day-style attack on King’s Landing? That always ends well…

Was I the only one who caught the looks on the faces of the crowd at her coronation? They definitely know who is responsible.
