Game of Thrones 7.05 "Eastwatch" 8/13/17 [Show Discussion]

Were any medieval war hammers actually as large as Gendry’s, or is this strictly a fantasy thing?

It doesn’t bother me too much in any case, I’m just curious. I was under the impression that historical war hammers were actually sized more like regular hammers, because that’s still plenty big enough to cause a serious head injury, while being much easier to swing around for the duration of a battle.

Yes, Howland Reed also knows and is presumably still alive.

I think the idea is that this is a blacksmith’s hammer, hence his facility in wielding it.

Good point, I’d forgotten about Howland Reed.

Robert Baratheon’s signature weapon was a war hammer; he famously used it to dispatch Rheagar. Gendry would know this, which would be another reason for him to adopt the weapon.

A lot of images I’m finding like this one suggest long-handled war hammers were an actual thing. They would usually be used against horsemen while shorter ones were used on foot.

That hammer looked badass, but it also looked like it would be too heavy to practically wield effectively, though Robert was described as enormoously strong when he was young. Perhaps Gendry is too.

Plus he’s been working bellows and hammering hot steel for years.

Although technically “King of the North” would outrank “Lady of Winterfell”.

No “perhaps”. He is a medieval blacksmith, which isn’t a job for pussies.
One thing that wasn’t clear to me was why Davos suddenly had to retrieve Gendry or why Gendry was so fired up to go off with him, like he’s been doing nothing but waiting for his call.

Blacksmiths spend all day swinging a heavy hammer, so one would expect that Gendry is plenty strong to wield it.

You might also need a blacksmith if you wanted to try to make Valyrian steel again…

It wasn’t “suddenly” - Davos decided to go look for Gendry, since he had to be in the area anyway. Gendry explained why he was prepared to drop everything and leave, in the scene where he dropped everything and left.

Hey mister, this is a PG rated thread!

Also, if I recall correctly, Lena Heady has a lot of tattoos, which is why she used a body double for her Walk of Shame, too.

Gendry’s oversized hammer was clearly plastic and unrealistic, but so are large battles where everyone uses a sword, and even peasants wear armor.

It’s still pretty great that Gendry is following in his father’s footsteps. All this time he was a blacksmith and it never clicked with me that Gendry and Robert were both “skilled with a hammer”.

Buy Davos’s Fermented Crab:

“Make your Softshell Hard!”

Any guesses on who is going to make it back from beyond the wall? I think we may lose all of the Suicide Squad except for Jon and one other person. Who the other one is, I’m not sure. Alas, I do not think it’ll be Tormund.

Most of us thought he was still rowing.

She said that the reason was because she didn’t think she could control her emotions and give an appropriate performance if she had actually been naked.

Tattoos could be a factor, but I would have thought it would have been a lot cheaper to use makeup or erase them digitally rather than doing two lengthy shoots plus the digital effects. Besides that, she’s done nude scenes in other movies.

Maybe I missed it but did Jon take some dragonglass back with him beyond the Wall? Might come in handy. I wonder if an axe modified with dragonglass would help kill whitewalkers thus making Gendry actually useful.

Did anyone find it odd that Jon didn’t go to Winterfell first and at least try to explain his plan to his lords? Even just seeing him return safely would give him some much needed credibility that he knew what he was doing. Not to mention obtaining some much needed intel from Bran.

Somehow I don’t think they would have gone to the trouble of bringing back Gendry just to burn him right away. Jorah I think has to die in more direct defense of his Khaleesi.

The three BWB are all expendable, but it the significance of Beric’s multiple resurrections hasn’t been explained yet. I would think he’d be saved for something more.

The note is real in that Sansa really wrote it. It was under duress but she really wrote it to keep herself alive back when she was a prisoner married to Joffery. Hopefully Arya is smart enough to see that.

I think what makes it difficult is Arya’s growth in the intervening years is easy to see. Sansa’s isn’t and Arya thinks she’s still the spoiled girl from Season One.
