Game of Thrones 7.05 "Eastwatch" 8/13/17 [Show Discussion]

Prediction: Beric dies and because of the “magic” north of the Wall, Thoros can’t bring him back. I’m guess the Hound lives so he can still reunite with Arya and/or the Mountain. I think Tormund gets the tragic death scene.

Killed by a zombie giant. Maybe the same giant he killed to get his name.

Some men were seen hauling small chests out of the dragonglass cave and then later loading them onto the boats.

Hugely ironic.

Being a medieval blacksmith, Gendry would probably be deaf as a stone. Hammering steel on an anvil would be LOUD!

That CANNOT happen! The only acceptable conclusion of this epic saga is Tormund sitting on the Iron Throne with Brienne as his Queen/Commander of Kingsguard.

Also, I think Gendry, the Hound, and obviously Jon have more story to get through, leaving Ser Friendzone, Beric and Thoros as the likely casualties. The Hound can heroically save Gendry to get himself off Arya’s list, and Jorah can sacrifice himself to save Jon as a final service to his Queen. Beric and Thoros are half dead already and get crossed off Arya’s list as well.

Tormund: “Did you bring the big woman?”
Jon: “No.”
[Tormund looks crestfallen]

Unfortunately, Arya tends to think in very black & white terms, due to her young age and her training at the, umm, House of Black and White. It’s definitely logical that she would take Sansa’s words at face value and confront her about it. Presumably they’ll smooth everything over, that is until Littlefinger thinks up another piece of ladder-inducing chaos…

I don’t think it’s safe to assume that Howland’s alive, based mainly on the fact that he hasn’t appeared in the show at all except in Bran’s flashbacks. You’d think that one of Ned Stark’s closest friends would have at least been mentioned by now (perhaps a mistake by the writers?)

In any case, I think it would be fantastic (and literally ironic) if nobody on the show ever finds out about Jon’s true parentage. Bran’s the only one who knows, but for some reason he hasn’t bothered to tell anyone.

Jon certainly does not have a regular weapon. And Thoros has the fire ability, too. Beric has a normal sword that can flame, possibly via faith.

He was first mentioned in S1 before being introduced as a character. Jaime and Jory reminisce about the Siege of Pyke (here, about 2:20 in). Thoros was basically a court hanger-on who was sent to convert Robert but instead spent his time drinking and whoring. He also competed in tournaments, and has a rather distinct appearance. It is perfectly believable that someone like Jorah knows him.

Beric was shown in a S1 scene, played by a different actor. The Wiki makes no mention of Thoros doing the same in S1, but he would’ve been brought by Beric.

Thoros and/or Beric are likely going to be dead (for good). The rest have plot armor for the time being, but the most expendable of the rest is Tormund, but I wouldn’t bet on him yet.

Melisandre and many things

Maybe in the final battle, last episode of the series, the Night King is completely overwhelming Jon in single combat, and suddenly Howland Reed appears out of nowhere to kill him from behind. But then he dies before telling Jon about the Tower of Joy.

Could be. But first, they have to have a Meaningful Conversation in which Jorah tells Jon how magnificent Daenerys is, with many reaction shots of Jon gazing into the distance, deep in thought. Then Jorah has to commend Daenerys to Jon’s care. Then he can die.

If that happened, I would take back all the snarky comments I’ve made about the writing employed in this giant, er, thing, as it perches defiantly atop the pop culture landscape, daring us to demur.

Because that would be tickety-boo.

The Bronn ex machina was the most annoying part but last we saw their horses were getting BBQ’d by Drogon. There were loads of mounted Dothraki on the prowl, how the hell did they avoid being rounded up with the Tarlys? Invisibility cloack? Ah, makes me sick!

The Night’s King has giant wights and giants can use bows. If you look at leftmost giant in the wight army looks like he has a bow on his back. My prediction - one of Dany’s dragons is downed and killed with giant arrow and risen as an ice dragon by the Night’s King.

Jon - 100% definitely coming back. Plot armour impenetrable.
Tormund - Doubtful. Other than Gilly he’s the last Wildling character we know, but not much plot armour. Be afraid.
Beric - 99% going to die. His purpose will have been to get The Hound beyond The Wall.
Thoros - Another 99% going to die, otherwise he’d just resurrect whoever dies. Night King will target the party healer.
Jorah - Tyrion giving him that coin was the kiss of death. He’s had a lot of screentime devoted to his recovery from the greyscale which would be a waste of time if he was just going to get shanked like a chump. My prediction is a heroic sacrifice somehow involving his greyscale cured status.
The Hound - WHAT IS HYPE MAY NEVER DIE. My favourite theory is his purpose is to actually get killed, rise as a wight and be brought back to King’s Landing. Cersei orders The Mountain to get rid of him and UNDEAD CLEGANEBOWL CONFIRMED GET HYPE.
Gendry - Difficult to say, as it’s not like the show hasn’t brought back characters only to die (remember Osha and Rickon?), but I think he has a bigger role to play as the last Baratheon. My verdict - survives.

Winterfell is pretty far inland. Not that we have any good feel for how long travel takes this season, but it would have added a week or more to the trip? Plus, going beyond the Wall is not going to popular with the lords, so time spent arguing there.

All of this against getting back as quickly as possible to work the armistice with Cersei before everything goes to shit down south.

But yeah, it might have been a good detour anyway. But he also doesn’t know that things are going sideways there (and he is political enough to figure it out).

Won’t Gilly’s discovery (about Jon being legitimate) give it away? At some crucial moment, Sam will remember what Gilly said, and voila, lightbulb-over-head. Or oil-lamp over head.

My favorite bit in the episode.

I think he’s been mentioned as Meera’s (and Jojen’s) father. If he’s dead then Meera is now head of House Reed. When she was taking leave of Bran, I think she would have mentioned that instead of just saying she was going to be with her family.

No! The Hound is NOT expendable! Not until he faces the Mountain.
I think most likely to go: Gendry, Tormond, Thoros, Dondarion

Medium: Jorah

Slight: Hound

No chance: Jon

Actually, I’ll modify that: I could see Jon being killed, and then Dondarion (possibly assisted by Thoros) transferring his life essence to raise Jon again while killing Dondarion permanently at last.
Uncle Benjen could show up, too. If so, I think he’ll bite it.

Yes! This has to be!

I thirded.

He never did, Tormund Giantsbane has a better ring to it than Tormund Giantsbabe, and that’s the honest truth

“It’s Hedley Lamarr!”

Just betrothed.
