There was a time when Cercei loved or at least admired Robert just after he became king. He wasn’t always old and fat…in his day he was quite something apparently (think Henry the 8th). I don’t think she killed their first kid together, and felt genuine grief about it. After that though I think her feelings changed about Robert and from that point on she took steps to make sure Robert couldn’t get her with child.
I don’t remember from the book when She and Jamie started having sex together, but I think that they didn’t really start having sex with the idea of having kids until after this point.
You know, that’s actually an interesting question. Did she and Jaime intend from the beginning to have kids together? It’s not completely clear from the books. She certainly admits to trying not to have kids with Robert, that’s for sure, but were she and Jaime actually trying, or were the kids more or less just an “oops”?
I don’t think they ever come out and say it in the book, but it’s implied (like much in the books…unlike the series). I think they started sleeping together when they were children (from memory), but I think that Cercei at least deliberately let herself become pregnant by Jamie (I don’t think Jamie ever felt much for the kids one way or the other and just liked screwing Cercei). She mentioned the Targarians and the fact that they wed brother to sister several times, and she seemed to have the idea that it would make the bloodlines of her children more pure…or something.
I do not think Cersei ever loved Robert. She was greatly disappointed that she didn’t get to marry Rhaegar. She may have been a good wife to him if he had behaved better, but there was never love. I’m not so sure Cersei even loved Jaime, truth be told. I think she simply used the resources available to her to manipulate him.

There is a part in Book I where Cersei is talking about Robert as he was just after he became king where she is describing how handsome and strong he was, how he looked so noble in his armor with his huge hammer in his hand, and how all the maidens wanted him, and how lucky she felt to have gotten him. I don’t know if this was love, but it wasn’t always the animosity and dislike/disgust she felt later.
I do think that she loved Jamie…he was her twin and she always felt very connected to him. That doesn’t mean she wasn’t a cold blooded bitch though, and after Jamie loses his hand she seems to have felt much less connected to him after that.
Except don’t forget that Book 5 takes place in parallel to Book 4, so he could start out alive and get killed midway through.
Although no POV character has died yet, right? With the possible exception of Brienne, of course. :looks it up: Nope, I’m wrong. Eddard was POV, and died, as was Catelyn. So was Theon. So there’s ample precedent for a POV character to die mid-way through their own POV.
Jaime and Cersei experimented with each other at a relatively young age, at least. I can’t remember the book, but there is one scene where Cersei reminds Jaime that their mother broke them apart at one point.
Indeed, there has already been a DWD sample chapter with his POV published on line at some point or other and which you could find with a bit of Googling.
Oh yeah, no reason for Bolton to kill Theon. I don’t think it was ever mentioned that he was dead, was it? Bran didn’t find his body in the aftermath at Winterfel, which alone should be telling.
If you’re searching for that Theon sample chaper…Martin continues the trend from Feast where the character’s ‘current’ name (Cat of the Canals, Alayne) is the POV chapter title…so it’s not called “Theon,” it’s called…
Roose Bolton actually told the Starks that Then was held captive ny Rams (his bastard) in ASOS. So I’m not sure why we would have thought him to be dead. No reason for Bolton to lie about that even if he was plotting with the Freys.
I will suggest again that those who’ve read all or part of A Dance with Dragons start a new thread, and keep all spoilers, boxed or otherwise, out of here. What say you?
Yeah, I don’t want any spoilers for Dance of Dragons…I have deliberately not read anything about it, nor any of the preview chapters available because I want it to be completely fresh when the thing finally comes out. Not only am I going to read the book as soon as it hits the shelves, but I’m going to buy the audible.com unabridged audio, and when I finish reading it listen to the entire series again including the new book.
Raise hand to vote “yes”. One of the reasons why I don’t frequent the ASoIaF boards at all is the existence of so many preview chapters. Don’t get me wrong: I don’t want to add to the spoiler paranoia that exists in the episode thread, and the revelation that Theon is alive isn’t exactly earth-shattering, but I am quite content not knowing anything about the events in the next book and would prefer to keep it this way for just a little time longer.
xtisme, I prefer the audio version anyway, though it can get confusing whenever many new names are introduced in a short time.
The guy reading the audible.com version is very good. He really gets you into the story. But I always like reading the book myself first, then listening to the unabridged audio when I’m on a trip somewhere, or driving in my car.
