Game of Thrones: omnibus discussion thread based on knowledge of books (OPEN SPOILERS)

Here is another theory that I am making up in regards to Syrio/Jaqen. He escaped from Trant. He managed to follow Arya long enough to learn that Yoren had taken her (if he didn’t outright tell yoren to take her), transformed himself into Jaqen, placed himself on the prisoner cart headed to the wall and followed along intending to help Arya.
What happened after Harrenhal, I’m not sure. Did he cross the Narrow Sea? Did he go to Oldtown and kill Pate?

I’ve been re-reading all of the books, and I just started on A Feast for Crows. It’s notable that it takes a 64-page appendix to list all of the characters and give a short description of them and how they’re interrelated. 64 pages. I must say it’s easier to keep track of everybody on the second read, though.

Sorry, makes no sense. Yoren was desperate for men to join the Watch, no questions asked. He was already taking two fugitives from the Lannisters, and two really horrible prisoners.

Jaqen would have been his best recruit by far – in fact, all he had to do was say he was going that way, and he would have been welcomed as an extra sword, even if he didn’t join. There would be no need for him to pretend to be a prisoner, let alone one so bad that he had to be kept locked up and so helpless that he needed Arya to save his life, rather than the other way around.

Bolding mine. Which is exactly why he would blend in better as a presumed prisoner rather than draw attention to himself as a skilled swordsman/assassin from Bravos who suddenly had an urge to take the black.

Then just don’t say you’re a swordsman. Done.

Why would a faceless man just follow Arya around anyway?

One of the rumors is Jaqen killed Balon Greyjoy, btw.

Really? I don’t see any justification for that all. We have a reasonable idea where Jaqen has been after his appearance, and he never goes near the Iron Islands. Further, the whole point of Melisandre is that she was able to bring down usurpers. Granted, she didn’t seem to have much to do with Robb, but she certainly dealt with Renly just fine. If she’s not responsible in some way for Balon, I’d be very much surprised.

That theory almost certainly comes from the old woman at High Heart who said,

A man without a face, of course being a faceless man, which could be Jaqen. I don’t think I quite buy it. More like another hired assassin working for Euron, if not Euron himself, who spent a fair amount of time in those lands across the sea.

Ok, then you’re still a Bravo willingly subjecting yourself to the Wall. It wouldn’t make sense.

The author himself has confirmed that Syrio is dead, i don’t understand why there is still any discussion about it.

No he hasn’t. He’s just implied it.

Because Syrio has become (one of) the ‘Boba Fetts’ of the series. A cool minor character picked up by the fandom. Personally I hope Mr Martin doesn’t do a Lucas and bring him back in a bigger role.

question, I on the 3rd book, minor new night watch npc called Lark the Sisterman, what is a sisterman? a eunuch?

Sisterman is someone originally from the Sisters, a group of islands . . . not sure exactly where.

ETA: Maps of Westeros - you can see on the maps that they are just north of the Vale.

Anyone who’s enjoying Iain Glen’s performance as Ser Jorah (and I am) should check out the first season of Law & Order UK, in which he plays a very smooth, sneaky killer. I see he’ll also be in the next season of Downton Abbey.

Good to know. I’m totally crushing on the character, and the actor. He exudes confidence and security and loyalty – gives me the warm fuzzies every time I see him.

In which book does Joffrey get his? I want to re-read that part, after last night’s episode.

Storm of Swords - Chapter 61

Ive been informed by a non book reader that if one more horse is graphically “murdered” on screen again i will suffer the consequences, for the life of me i can’t remember if it happens again as it’s been a while since i read the books, help?

I don’t remember any other such scene. Horses die by the thousands in the war, I presume, but aren’t graphically described.

I haven’t gotten to see the new episode yet.

Do we get to see anything about Ned and the battle at the tower flashback, or is not an official dead (heh) end?

-Joe

No tower of joy scene at all, very disappointing. We didn’t even get to see Ned and Jamie in the throne room after he killed Aerys, something i thought i saw in a preview at some point.

Figured. As I said at some point in some thread (no really), the writers are clearly doing everything they can to avoid flashbacks and dream sequences and the like.

So, I assume from the only flashbacks and dream sequences we’ve seen we all can guess how episode ten is going to start…
