Lommy, one of the kids that Yoren took, when the Lannister men capture them.
The three that Jaqen killed for Arya (marginally important as they were featured in her “prayer”).
The High Septon (torn apart by the mob)
That’s all I can think of at the moment. And I just finished re-reading Clash the other day in prep for DwD.
Maester Cressen dies in the prologue.
At least one Kingsguard dies in the battle of the blackwater. Meryn Trant or Mandon Moore, always forget which is which.
Davos doesn’t but we’re led to believe he dies in the blackwater and don’t learn differently until Storm. Two of his sons die there as well.
That lord that holds storms end dies. But I can’t even remember his name and he wasn’t hugely important.
I’m not sure that becomes completely clear until Arya and the Hound are captured. Isn’t that in Storm? Up until then, it’s a fog-of-war type thing, where various people claim he was killed, but they must be wrong–he’s still alive, eh?
After the duel with the Hound and getting CPR from Thoros he says something like “Seven times is too many”, so that suggest at least that he’s died six times previously and was brought back, and that the accounts of people killing him are probably accurate.
Also, he has the marks of his deaths…the side of his head staved in, the eye out, the lance through the chest, the marks on his neck from hanging, the wound the Hound gave him and I forget the other.
I’m rereading, starting with Clash, and it’s interesting how I see the characters in my mind now that I’ve seen them represented on screen.
Cercei/Jaime: I still see them as being much blonder, and the book Cercei is just too different, too brusque, compared to the television version, so she remains as I originally thought of her. Jaime…I see him as the television version, but blonder. And with just a little bit longer hair.
Catelyn/Ned: Both actors stuck in my head, and nailed it, I think. Even though Catelyn’s character is also different, for some reason the actress’s face and attitudes just carry over for me.
Tyrion: This one surprised me, quite a bit. I love, absolutely ADORE Dinklage and his portrayal; on screen it’s perfect and I really, really enjoy it. But when re-reading…I go back to my version of him, which is…I dunno. Just different. I don’t picture Dinklage, his accent or anything else from the screen at ALL. Wierd.
4: Dany/Viserys: The actors kinda nailed it, apparantly, 'cause now I see them mentally when I read.
The Arryn kids: I never really pictured them specifically; the older boys in particular just never really coalesced for me, and when re-reading, they still don’t.
Arya and Bran, I see as the actors portrayed them, except I still pronounce Arya in my head as ‘Are-ee-uh’, despite the jarring realization that on screen they pronounced it so differently that it took a few episodes for me realize what they were even saying. :smack:
Much as I enjoy Dinklage, he’s not nearly ugly or malformed enough to fit the book description of Tyrion. But that’s OK - I still think he’s one of the greatest things about the HBO series.
So, when season two rolls around does anyone else think there should be an “Episode thread for the non-paranoid”?
I’m sorry, but the bitching in the episode threads is driving me nuts. “BTW, don’t get too attached to Ned or Drogo, lulz!” is a spoiler. So is “We know for a fact that Mikken can’t swim in a bucket” as is “Robb is so going to regret making his deal with the Freys the next time he sees him.”
However, I can’t be the only one who finds it really obnoxious at the level of bitching that comes from statements as “I thought the Sky Cell would be more sloped”.
I mean, really, if someone asks why it’s called the Seven Kingdoms, before answering should someone flip back through their videos and double check to see if Martell and Tully have been mentioned yet? After all, we know from the show that Catelyn was a Tully, and that the Tully family lives at Riverrun, but has the show actually explained that it is one of the Seven Kingdoms? The Freys seemed kind of important. Are they one of the seven?
I mean, fuck.
Oh, and I also don’t believe for the life of me that Ascenray has already independently deduced Jon Snow’s likely origin. But maybe that’s just me.
What gets me about Acsenray is that he was one of the ones who was bitching about completely inconsequential non-spoilers that just didn’t happen to come from the show, way back at the beginning.
I consider myself banished from the episode threads now, btw. Apparently, in explaining why my addressing the Jon speculation wasn’t a spoiler (because Martin doesn’t address it at all yet), I’ve spoilered the entire world and possibly a few neighboring solar systems. Biggest bunch of WATBs in the world over there…
