We will continue to ship cold south as long as it keeps us from -40 in March. We did go out, and it’s bloody cold out there. We will stay in for the rest of the day.
Nat just conked, I’m having a nap, and then I get to hang fun laundry and wash dishes. Envy me.
Oh! We got an email this morning! Nat’s godparents just had their second yesterday, another little girl, and they got to have a fast, easy home birth. I’m so jealous. I’ve got to make something for the new little one, and get a toy or book for the big one.
I know EXACTLY what he is going through. I was diagnosed with ADHD in the 6th grade and they put me on Adderol, which I have been on ever since (I’m currently 21, so it’s been a while). The pills murder my appetite - I’m 6’ and 145 to 155 lbs depending on the proximity to Christmas and its accompanying junk food. Days I take Adderol, I often only eat one meal a day, and attempts to eat more make me sick. My advice? Have him skip it on weekends. That way he’ll actually eat. Most ADD pills work on a day-to-day basis so skipping a dose may cause him to revert to his old behavior for a day but as soon as he takes another pill he’ll be fine; for me, at least, it was an acceptabe compomise to make sure I didn’t starve.
FCM - I attend University of Maryland, Baltimore County, studying Mechanical Engineering, and I live in an on-campus appartment there. More on this further down this post.
Mahna - My would-be-girlfriend-if-I-ever-got-around-to-actually-asking-her-out loves a boy with shiny bits as well. The same goes for me (I’m bi), and on top of that I’m naturally fairly submissive, so for us, letting her Bedazzle me is an act of both physical and emotional intimacy which we find quite enjoyable. I can’t really explain it at all, and especially not in a way that’s suitable for this thread, but the short version is that it’s a turnon for both of us. And that’s not even counting the kinky things you can do when you have piercings in naughty places…
Oh, and you’re free to swoon over me any time, it’s flattering.
ScaryFaerie - That sounds awesome. Is it true that british people eat really bland food? I’ve always wondered about that. Also, what show was it? Admittedly I’m not much of a theater person, but I did once seriously contemplate buying Spamalot tickets til I realized they were sold out for two years in advance.
Farmer - What happened? Did I miss something from the last MMP? I wish to offer sympathies but without knowing what has transpired I cannot offer sincere consolations, only meaningless general placations that I’m sure you could do without.
To all the Canadians here - thanks for the snow, and the cold, but for the love of all that is righteous and good, take back your thrice-bedamned wind! It’s holding steady at “gale force” and makes walking around campus miserable. The only thing redeeming about it is that it causes my ling coat to billow out behind me, showing off my fluffy white tail, which is usually hidden from view under said coat.
Fortunately I don’t have to be outside much today - we got enough snow that campus was closed! I got up at 8AM to check, and he school’s page announced a noon opening. OK, so my 10 and 11am classes were out but I still had Physics discussion at 4:30. Back to bed. Got up at 11:30am and checked again - Closed. Score! Celebratory pelvic thrust, then off to get ready for the day and obtain sustenance. Long, luxurious, higly irresponsible scalding-hot shower, dressed, out door. First thought outside: “FuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckCOLDWIND!!!” Trudge to the Commons for a Buffalo Chicken sub from the sub place. Commons is closed. Shit. Trudge to dining hall. Met another Furry (and made another friend) when he noticed my tail during a gust of wind that made my coat billow out behind me. Lunch at dining hall was good; ate til I thought I’d burst. They had Dessert Pizza, which is pizza crust with apple pie fillng and cinnamon-sugar streudel topping. Delicious. Also ate kielbasa with onions, peppers and marinara sauce, peach slices, corn and lima beans, chocolate-frosted yellow cake, bowtie pasta salad with ham, olives and vinaigrette ressing, cole slaw with honey mustard and cranberries, and two glasses of milk. Yeah, I was hungry.
Trudged back to the appartment; ears were burning from the wind chill by the time I made it back. Wish I really was covered in fur like my fursona. Roomies were up by now, talked with them a bit, changed into pajamas and flopped into bed with laptop. Snuggled in under furry throw blanket, fleece blanket and comforter, propped self up n four of my nine pillows. No longer cold. Signed on AIM, used it to talk and flirt with Kitty for a bit and made plans with her for next weekend. Got online, came here to check the MMP (and any other interesting threads), and now I’m here. Hooray for lazy days snuggling in bed! Do wish Kitty was here though, she’s really warm. blushes
I need to do three metric shittons of Calc III homework. Instead I’m surfing the net and watching pseudoscience on Discovery Channel. I’s a bad puppy.
Things to do to ease your boredom on a Friday night with your spouse sick from the flu, nothing worth watching on TV, and a lifetime supply of Guinness in the fridge:
(mostly internet related)
Actually SURF the internet. Start with a news story, say in Slate, find an item of interest in the article - Google that, or just click the link and go from there. Works great with very short attention spans. You can go from reading about movie reviews to a site about floor plans of ancient castles, to a video of a dancing cat in almost no time at all.
Watch the cat for a second, wonder what he’s thinking, go to Blogspot and start a blog for him. (yes I did too, told you I was bored)
Challenge the Kid to test our Google-Fu against each other by inventing a game where we change the channel on the TV, and have to Google the first proper noun we hear. Winner is the one that calls out the number of hits first.
Do the surfing thing again, only this time on MySpace. Go to a friend, find one of their friends you don’t know, then go to one of that person’s friends, and so on. I fell in lust with a 33 year old blond from somewhere in Alabama who has about 75 pictures of herself, and is the cutest little thing ever.
Decide to read up on a subject that seems fairly scholastic and high-brow. I had just finished the new Christopher Moore, and was having trouble remembering my Lear, so I spent some time catching up and remembering why Shakespeare isn’t my cup of tea.
Challenge the Kid to some Wii bowling, get spanked badly and decide to call it a night.
**Moonie **- cool, another engineer (almost) in the MMP. I’m an Aero Engineer by degree, tho I have worked and am currently working as a mechanical engineer, married to a ME who used to be a machinist/tool maker. I grew up in Parkville and went to Goucher for a year, back when it was still a women’s college, but it sucked, so I dropped out and joined the Navy, then went back to school (Purdue) a few years later and finally got degreed.
Snow update - it snowed some more, but it finally seems to have stopped. Sun is out. Main roads are mostly wet. We went out for lunch, and the quarter mile from our house to the main road is slushy, but we did OK. SIL has dug out the van, so he’ll be going into work for his evening session. (He runs the social programs for an apartment complex.) Anyway, if you go to my photobucket, the last 9 pics are post-shoveling, as well as shots of the 2 trees that fell.
Now I’ve got to hem my daughter’s dance pants, then I’m going to assume the knitting position. All that shoveling wore me out!!! I’m too old for this crap!
LiLi, you’re welcome to keep winter. I don’t like it much, but I call dibs on fall and spring (which totally DOES exist, so there!)
Moonie, now that I know you’re all of 21, I can’t do any swooning. It makes me feel like a dirty old cougar (and not in the furry sense)… I guess I’ll just stick to affectionate hair ruffling coz you’re so gosh-darned cute.
MBG, you know the rule about cats. Now make with the blog link!
Moooooom, is that what you call snow? Pshaw! That’s what we call a light flurry over here in the Great White North.
I’m debating sneaking out of work early because I feel like I might just break down if I have to read another PowerPoint presentation (it’s been three straight months of this crap now). I’m not a happy Muppet right now.
Aero? Dear lord… I bow to your clearly superior intellect, or at least patience and dedication. I looked into doing Aerospace Engineering briefly (what budding technophile DOEAN’T dream of building rockets?) but… Sheesh. There’s “complicated”, and then there’s “We ran out of Greek and Arabic letters to use for our constants and formulas so we’re gonna start using Tolkein Elvish characters now.”
Plus, I’ve decided I want to spend my life designing alternative energy techologies - say, higher-efficiency windmills that put out more power with less wind, or perhaps more effective solar panels - so Mech E seemed like a better fit.
Mahna - When you’re as catastrophically socially inept as I am you’ll take any affection you can get your paws on. Though I suppose I can settle for hair-ruffling… Even if I wouldn’t say I’m cute at all.
I should really post a pic in the Photo Thread if it’s still around. Before I can do that, though, I gotta shave and crap… I sense additional homework procrastination incoming.
**Muppet **- I don’t need your sassy mouth, missy!
Just finished helping daughter dig her car out. Then I let her drive me around the block, since she’s never driven in snow or slush. The girl has a lead foot. I just told her to drive gently. Repeatedly.
I’m now exhausted. I need a shower. And I’m hungry. Is it Firday yet? 'Cause it’s gonna be in the 60s on Firday.
Alack and alas, no. Mr. Jicket does at the resort where he works maintenance. Come May and the seasn opens for guests, the resort staff have their meals prepared by kitchen staff. Guest meals are prepared by Chef UberPalate with his/her own staff in another kitchen at the resort.
Brrrutal pics, Moooom. We coasties shovel our walks and driveways by waiting for the rain to melt it away. j/k…we’ve had our WHOMPS!
Oh, pine. That’s for the firepit.
Fixed that for ya. snicker
I’ve fired off a memo to the operations managers at our blizzard factories in Inuvik and Resolute. They’re pretty busy, so I’m afraid you’re just gonna have to chill 'til we hear back from them. sigh Gotta get the laundry out of the dryer.
Oh joy, oh bliss… The Boy will be home for dinner for the first time in, well, a very very very long time. I’m very excited about this development.
Tonight’s menu is roasted spaghetti squash with some of the leftover pistachio crumble from last night’s experiment, and some snausages I dug out of the deep freeze. Not particularly gourmet, but I’m not really in the mood to cook anything elaborate.
Another source of delirious joy is the fact that Ms Catty Crankpants (better known as Ariel) has just crawled onto my lap and curled up in a happy purring ball of cat. It’s a rare and precious moment… too bad I’m going to have to dump her shortly so’s I can get that squash in the oven.
criminey, I’m sooo jealous of Mr Jickets. My inner broke-ass student gets positively giddy at the idea of free food, even though it’s been years since I’ve had to worry about running out of both money and groceries before the next pay day.
Moonie, you’re cute. Deal with it. I’m not sure how crapping beforehand would improve your photo… but hey, we’ve all got our own strange purtification rituals, right? (yeah yeah, I know what you meant, but it took a second for my brain to process the intended meaning)
Howdy Y’all! Hope everybody with a snow day enjoyed it and/or got unburied by snow. All I can say is, glad it’s not me. We have freezing overnight temps the next two nights and then mid to upper 70’s Amurrkin Friday and Saturday. Go figure.
Not much else to report from da cave.
Yays, boos, hugs, trouts, woohoos, how you doin’s as appropriate or inappropriate cause I’m like that.
It was supposed to snow again tonight; so far I see no additional precipitation. This makes me sad, even though I know UMBC would NEVER in a billion years close two days in a row.
Current progress on aforementioned Calc homework: I got out my books. Haven’t opened them though. I’ve spent all afternoon lounging shirtless on the floor, propped up on pillows and swaddled in a faux-fur throw and a fleece blanket.
I did manage to get a decent pic of myself… But it’s for Kitty. She wanted me posed shirtless, showing off my collar, leash, cuffs, and newly-bedazzled chest while clutching a white wolf plushie she gave me. It’s cute and sfw (pants are still on) but it’s not something I’d post unless it was requested. I gotta get one of my friends to take a pic of me in the getup I wear to classes so I can actually post it here and you guys can see who you’re talking to. Maybe I can do that tomorrow.
Crimeny - I think they got the memo, the wind has died down a lot.
Mahna - Juvenile humor makes anything better, huh? XD
One of these days I need to figure out why girls I talk to online think I’m cute. You’re far from the the first to say such things, but for the life of me I don’t understand what i’m doing to deserve the compliments.
Oh shit… random string of expletives I just realized the dining hall closes in one minute and the Commons is still closed. Looks like I skip dinner tonight. Meh.
That’s the thrust of our plan. He’s in a very rigorous middle school, so he has a lot of work on the weekends. We’re going to work it out where he does most of it on one day and stays off his med the other. Protein/nutritional replacement drinks will help too.
Funny- he wants to be an engineer, too- aerospace or automotive.
I think ADHD provides the kind of manic and almost obsessive attention needed to be an engineer when it’s properly managed. It takes something complicated like engineering to occupy our hyperactive brains.
That is not a medical fact or anything, just my experience
His dad and I are both research scientists- never happy unless we’re on the upward trajectory of a complicated learning curve. He comes by his ADD honestly… I am 100% positive I have it. Sorely tempted to snitch one of his meds.
