I’m not sure I entirely understand what your’e saying, but what I’m hearing is that Autolycus is acting inappropriately and embarrassingly (to himself and the people watching him make a fool of himself). In my experience here, there have always been people who have big, flamboyant personalities. They don’t tend to stay controversial for too long - they either tone it down and become regular posters, or they get further and further out there and eventually flame out or just disappear. Yes, people do encourage them along their journey, for better or worse. That’s part of mob mentality, I guess.
I don’t feel too badly for people who over-share, with or without encouragement. No one forces anybody to post anything.

What I see is someone with really significant damaged, not a little depression, not the ragged fringes of mental illness, not eccentric, truly, sadly, painfully damaged by life. To watch the community I so highly respect encourage him, so they can laugh at him and point, disturbs me greatly. To read that some will now share a few stories of their own, totally creeps me out.

I actually like **Auto ** and I hope he does tone it down and does get better. He has problems, he knows he has problems. The Dope could be a good or bad thing for him. I know I am not qualified to make an educated guess which it will be. Hopefully it will help him.

Thank you for your concern, but overall life has treated me well. I’m just an attention whore with little to no barrier between my brain and the keyboard.
As far as the whore thread goes, I think people just wanted to hear the story. I reputedly tell good stories. If it was all just an attempt to point and laugh at me, then oh well.

Based on his last post, you might correct. I thought in this long thread he admitted he had some problems, mainly with alcohol abuse. If he does not think he has some problems, then I need to agree with you and not Auto.

First, could you be more specific about what kinds of things you’d like to see changed?
You’ve mentioned that you think Autolycus has depression and other emotional problems. I don’t think that’s uncommon here. Is that the problem you’re talking about? Any others?
Let me say that people keep saying that other people are just pointing and laughing at the guy. I disagree. The reason this post got resurrected was because someone said that Autolycus’ stories were the funniest stories they’d seen in 3 years of lurking on The Dope. That says something.
Now it may be that some people are pointing and laughing. It seems that someone is always pointing and laughing at something or someone here. But I’m not one of those pointing and laughing at Autolycus.
He has an amazing capacity to tell a funny story. He says he made up the linked story in an hour. That’s amazing. It was hilarious. One of the things that has changed and had worried me in the past was that Autolycus used to use anger as his main source of humor. But in this past story, he demonstrated that anger was not necessary to get the humor in. Perhaps you’d be more comfortable if he could tell a story that didn’t have alcohol in it. I would too.
But if he could put together a wonderfully funny story without alcohol, anger, hurting himself or others, would that alleviate your concerns? Or is something else bothering you?
Although you didn’t answer my question, if you were talking about Autolycus as the mentally challenged, I have to say that he’s said (from previous posts) he has more going for him than many other posters I’ve seen posting here. He’s enrolled in Boston College (on leave right now), has a job, has a girlfriend and I haven’t seen him post about major strange problems (I guess that’s open for interpretation) that some others have. If he has, I haven’t seen it.
Yes, he seems to have abused alcohol and may still be. But he’s seeking professional treatment for that and his depression. Are you saying that by encouraging him to post here, we’re encouraging his alcoholism? In what way? I think people in this thread made it pretty clear that any posts about current alcohol over-indulgence won’t be looked at as funny but as very serious. I hope he got that message.

What do you suggest we do about it? He is certainly aware that I think he has sometime been skeevy and weird on this board in the past. Beyond that, all I can suggest is not reading his threads, because we can’t change him. All you can do is not encourage him. That’s the point that was made to me in this thread, and I think it’s correct, because we can’t dictate his behavior nor that of his “fans.”
