so for more than 8 hours there’s been insufficient staff available to at least temporarily suspend some one??
again.cripes. I like damn near all the staff here. I’m generally supportive of the staff, the job they do, timing and shit. I don’t recall ever saying they dropped the ball. they did here, IMHO YMOV
I was referring to Kaitlyn personally: Kaitlyn’s identity did turn out to be false, which is something that bona fide genderqueer and trans people are constantly being accused of. It ought not to make a difference in the way other trans people are treated, but it still hurts.
Meh. This position isn’t very coherent, just emotional. I’m just worried that the next trans person to come out or come on board will get a big gout of skepticism that they don’t deserve.
It’s certainly not impossible or unlikely. And, to tell the truth, I’m not even sure what the make-up of the review group needs to be. Is it an admin and two mods? Lacking an available admin, three mods? I dunno.
Overall though, does it really matter if it takes twenty minutes, eight hours or a whole day? I know we’re looking at this differently, but I guess I don’t see why something needs to happen immediately. I also don’t see what time has passed as unacceptable.
Because he was a sock; socks can be banned by one staff member. Suspending or banning a non-sock (especially a long-time member) requires a review by several of the staff–most of whom haven’t been available throughout this all (according to TVeblen).
I don’t even have a dog in this fight, but I must say, matt, well said. I’ve been sitting here in the middle of nowhere, feeling for this (apparently fictional )person, and trying to understand such gender issues. Now it’s all fake?
I thought I gained a little more insight into gender issues. Guess not.
The hell of it, MissGypsy is that everything that Kaitlynclaimed to be going through is stuff that people I know – including people on this board – actually are going through.
Bear in mind, she fooled everyone who actually has experience with the subject. If it had rung false, someone would have said something before now. So wherever she got all the data from (for all I know, she might really be trans and have made up all the other stuff, or, as someone suggested, have trans acquaintances), you don’t have to reject what you gained.
Look, Matt, I mentioned my PhD thesis and a number of posters are sceptical and sneering. So what?
And if a person who’s going through the trauma of transition (whether including SRS or not) can’t handle what some people write on a message board, then I hate to think how they’re going to cope in real life. Never leave the house?!
Why does it matter if she is suspended right away? What difference does it make if the administration takes a day or two until there are enough administrators online to make the decision?
It’s interesting to me that Kaitlyn knew so much about the process of gender transitioning and transgender psychology, to the point where she fooled all of the other transgendered posters who participated in her threads. That’s a pretty obsessive level of detail for someone who isn’t actually transgendered themselves to research and internalize. I don’t think this is as simple as someone pulling a prank on the boards just for the hell of it.
Kaitlyn, if you’re still reading this: you’ve pissed off a lot of people, me included, but that doesn’t mean you don’t still have friends here. If there’s anything you want to talk about, my e-mail is in my profile.
Although, Roger, now that I think about it, a lot of people use the internet as a test balloon before coming out in real life, so it’s not inconceivable that someone could post, especially in a relatively accepting forum such as this one, while in a delicate state. Unwarranted abuse could be traumatic in that situation.
At any rate, it’s never nice to have undeserved shit dumped on you, regardless of where you are in life.
a suspension can be lifted, if there’s sufficient cause. and there’s precendence for that.
however, posting here is a privilege. screw up, and you should loose that privilege. at least for a period of time while they verify shit.
again, there’s plenty of precedent of folks being temporarily suspended while they sorted shit out. In some cases (none that I can think of at the moment) where some bizarre situation occured and the person was banned, but when shit got sorted out all was ok.
Point being - the listed thread showsufficient cause to at least suspend while you sort shit out. that’s been routinely done here. why not in this case?
From what I have read, only an Admin, not a Mod, can ban someone. If that’s true, at least one Admin was around to ban CoP, so what is the hesitation about Kaitlyn?
All of a sudden, a group discussion is necessary?
From the SDMB registration agreement:
The poster admitted to lying for almost 4 years, for heaven’s sake.
Kaitlyn is offline and I’ve no reason to suppose he’ll be back in a hurry.
By the way, did anyone else find it strange that a teacher would be up till all hours posting when they had to get up early the next morning? I put it down to all the hormones.
Like I said. I generally have been supportive of staff here. I find it difficult to believe that in over 8 hours, there’s never been sufficient staff avaiable to at least temporarily suspended privileges under these circumstances. I recall posters that had years and years of posting w/ long lists of infractions taking a long time, but never recalled a poster where it was obviousl that they’d played the members here w/ lies after lies, where their posting privileges weren’t at least temporarily suspended. and I recall any number of occasions (if not the names) where there was a temporary concern about socks/lies/whatever where a poster’s privileges were suspended immediately “subject to review”.
goddamn. I"m about damn near the most ‘staff suportive’ poster here. I recall ONCE emailing privately that I thought they’d not done the best thing.
I don’t ever recall saying “yep they screwed up”. along w/me agreeing w/folks I’ve gone head to head w/on any number of occasions.
