I agree with wring. Something’s not adding up, and it’s the fact that there was enough staff around to shitcan the Pineapples but not enough to even suspend someone who was proven to be lying and has now confessed to it.

Oh, come on now. Pineapple was a sock, which is a clear and unambiguous violation of board rules. There isn’t a rule against pretending to be a Korean transsexual. Up until now, Kaitlyn/Number Six had been, as far as I know, a poster in good standing, and as far as I’m concerned, a valuable member of the boards. I don’t know what the fuck is up with him/her, neither do you, and neither do the mods. There’s absolutely nothing clear cut about this, and there’s nothing wrong with taking a little time before making a final decision. F’r chrissake, they can still decide to break out the ban stick later. It’s not like there’s a statute of limitations on when you can ban someone.

Miller - I didn’t call for a ban, but it’s not at all uncommon or wrong or bizarre to ‘suspend’ while we sort it out. and for some one to obviously lie to the degree demonstrated over a long period of time, there’s a history of folks being banned for that.
I don’t claim to kinow jack shit about this poster, they completely fell under my radar. But that level of lying over that level of time should garner suspension of posting while they investigate, discuss amongst themselves, email the person off the boards. Don’t prentend that there isn’t a precedent for that sort of thing.

Socks are automatically banned, no questions asked. Someone like NumberSix/Kaitlyn is different and discussions would have to take place first.
However, I think he (I’m going to assume when Kaitlyn said it’s all “true”, that means that it really WAS the poster NumberSix pretending to be a MtF Korean lesbian), definitely will be banned.

The admin here has banned posters in the past who admitted to lying in one thread.
This poster didn’t own up to any lying until they were outed.
Those who were banned in the past for lying in order to create contraversy were called for trolling.
What more contraversial subject could there be than a transexual lesbian elementary school teacher in Texas? So, couldn’t every thread this person started or posted in as that particular individual be considered trolling behavior?
What knowledge of anything of this person do we have that is verifiable other than the fact that they got cought in lies?

I understand the trials of working with reduced staff, but aren’t threads with huge revelations like this usually abruptly hidden until the parties involved can be sorted out?

TVeblen pointed out that suspensions happen upon review, same as bannings. If there isn’t enough available staff to discuss the suspension right now, a suspension can’t happen.
I’m not sure why the lack of an immediate suspension/banning of Kaitlyn is such a big deal. Let them get to it when they can.
All I have to say is that this is the best crash and burn since good ol FreakFreely. Awe-inspiring in every way possible, not in the least whoever did all that damn research to, um, “out” Kaitlyn. We’ll be talking of this for years to come.

Yeah. It doesn’t seem as though Kaitlyn is likely to get up to a great ruckus in the time it takes for the admins to decide on a punishment.
I’d just like Kaitlyn to know that, although (obviously) everything I said in defence of trans people and gender freedom stands unquestionably, I’m more than a little hurt that she chose to play her allies for fools. It is easier to be dishonest on the Internet than in real life, but a community like this only functions properly if we are able to suspend disbelief and interact with one another as though our life stories on the board are not completely at odds with what exists in meatspace.
I hope she’s aware that in all probability, too, she’s given other current, and any future, genderqueer, transgender, or transsexual Dopers a harder row to hoe. Certainly, this will be attributable to prejudice, but non-gender-normative people already have to go through so much arrant second-guessing of our life stories and situations that having that actually be justified in this instance is quite galling.

Sure it does: it only takes one mod/admin to ban a sock. It takes several staff to review and agree upon a suspension or a banning. If there aren’t enough staff on-line needed to discuss the possible suspension/banning, then it can’t happen.
But since at least one staff member was on-line to catch and ban the sock, that’s what happened.

But nothing of the kind was justified in this instance. Someone got a kick out of recreating themselves as someone that was popular, accepted and affirmed. That’s all.
Also, wring, you’ll need to verify this with the staff, but when previous suspensions happened (e.g., vanilla), they probably had enough staff on-line and available to review and enact a suspension. More than likely that’s the difference between now and then.
