You had no way of knowing that. The way this has turned out in no way invalidates the points made in the first three pages of this thread.
milroyj, you were right. There was no “good start”.
I just have to say that I miss the supportive principal character. Man, it drives me bonkers that that character doesn’t exist. 
It was all a very interesting, detail filled story. There was either some truth in it, or Kaitlyn has one of the most vivid imaginations I’ve ever seen. I followed Kaitlyn’s threads about transgenderism, and the thread about starting at a new school. I was completely hooked on those threads, and I thought she was so brave and so lucky to be surrounded by such supportive people. I was really taken with her attitude and her wit.
That being said, it really bothered me to find out that it’s all lies. I never conversed with Kaitlyn, and I don’t exactly feel betrayed, but it bothered me because there are plenty of REAL transgendered people on these boards (or are there?!? 
) and it seems very disrespectful to them to come in here with an invented life and pretend to understand. That’s all I have to say. Did anyone else catch that Kaitlyn asked the mods to revoke her posting rights?
I agree with Arnold Winkelried. Whoever hid behind a sock is a distasteful pussy who doesn’t deserve the “reputation” s/he has on these boards (unless we can assume it’s one of those with a very poor reputation).
While lies needed to be exposed, an honorable poster would have emailed the food chain. An assholish poster would have spammed this thread. Only a pathetic excuse for a human being spam anonymously for attention.
This has not been a good month for moderators, but I really appreciate the class and restraint tom, TVeblen, and Arnold have shown in this thread of screaming harpies.
As for Kaitlyn Six, I’m sorry that all the good done for transsexuals recently will be erased, at least in the near term, by mistrust.

I have to admit that I was slightly surprised as to the lack of reaction to PS238. I’m sorry, but every teacher I know that also likes comics, loves this comic. And no reaction to the denim skirt joke?
I also have to admit, I didn’t think she and Mrs Six looked exactly as good as they said they did.
But everyone’s beautiful on the internet. So, well, I believed, I feel sorry K had to create a charade like this for attention, I was rather looking forward to conversations about comics with her. I still have managed to avoid reading Sandman, (It came out in the years I was avoiding comics), and I wanted to have someone who wasn’t already a fan’s opinion.
I also thought her short reaction to Transmet was weird, coming as it did after Hunter’s death.

A couple notes:
-I’m terrible with names, and am afraid I had Kaitlyn confused with KellyM on several occasions. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on in this thread, until I realized what my confusion was. I post this only in case anyone else is making the same boneheaded mistake.
-I agree with matt, that there’s a possibility that petty grudgeriffic dopers are going to dredge this nonsense up the next time a transsexual posts on the boards. Don’t do it. #6’s weird fantasies are interesting as a case study, but their relevance to actual transgendered folks is tangential at best.
-Is the poster who created the sock-puppet also getting banned?

Then if it’s not safe or appropriate or satisfactory or convenient to divulge the actual facts under your own name, then you shouldn’t do it at the SDMB.
In this case, since Kaitlyn seems to me to be obviously the kind of person that would have difficulty meeting people at dopefests (due to the amount of lying done on the board), I can’t even imagine a reason why your suggestion of the potential difficulties ensuing from IRL meetings would apply in this case.
If or when it happens there will be an annoucement in ATMB if necessary.
I’d like to put in a good word for **paulbeserker **here. He and a bunch other Londopers took me pub crawling when I visited London last year. He talks pretty much like he posts, but the difference is, you don’t see his facial expressions and hear his voice. He’ll look at you with his eyes bugged out, his neck muscles a bit strained, and with a kind of a grimace as he rants, and you just can’t help but have fun in his presence. Especially when **garius **is around to push his buttons. His words look mean typed out, but in a pub setting, they’re hilarious!
So it’s best to read paulbeserker in the proper context. Grab a pint, get in a smoky room, and imagine a lot of shouting.
I hope this doesn’t come out as completely naive (and I’m not advocating its use one way or another), but does it really matter who or how Kaitlyn/Number Six was outted/exposed? Regardless, the sacrifice was made. The Can of Pineapples has endured banning over the incident and I doubt anyone else would go through so much trouble as to create a sock for a similar sole purpose in the future. Likewise, perhaps they felt it necessary to do things this way to avoid what some still call a “cover up” concerning another previous Doper’s questionable demise. Having put everything out here on the board for all to see allows that nothing is being swept from view and information can be disseminated as each member sees fit to interpret it. Just a thought.
Lastly, is it surprising to wonder if someone in good standing would risk being the bearer of bad news about another who is so very popular, well-liked and has been here several years with many thousands of posts? Especially if you’re a newbie or the research hadn’t been something by you. How would you account for where you got it? In their case, whatever that may have truly been, couldn’t it have been possible that they’d done a lot of leg work before pay-to-play, so therefore a lack of searching ability wouldn’t have been an issue. Or they could have used a friend as a proxy to do it for them. Tons of scenarios are possible here and I can’t imagine everyone would want to jeopardize their reputation (certainly if they’d worked hard to get and maintain it) over something that ultimately might prove wrong, inconsequential or backfires, resulting in their being taken to task. Or worse.

IIRC, Can of Pineapples would be considered a sock regardless of whether or not he / she already had an account. He registered solely for the purpose of speaking for another poster, which is sock-puppetry even if this was his only account. As far as we know, the mods have no idea who he was speaking for, because they aren’t the same poster.
Any Mods want to clarify this?

it certainly seems to be that CoP is an established poster. They have their little ways of identifying who it is.
I figure they’ll either tell us or they won’t, whichever; it’s no skin off my back either way. Prurient curiosity makes me want to know, but it’s a small point.

I’ll tell you this much, a post or thread has a lot more chance of being hidden when we think it’s posted by a sock puppet then when it’s posted by a poster in good standing. If you want to make sure something is put on the board for all to see, do it under your own name. That doesn’t guarantee we won’t remove the thread if deemed necessary but you have a much better chance that way.
