Get your fucking facts right (Kaitlyn/Priceguy)

You are wise.
Daniel

Actually, I was referring to Can of Pineapples. My impression was that it pissed you off that s/he pulled one over on you, i.e. came in here openly posing as a sock and “exposed” someone’s lies. And got away with it – you’ll probably never know who that person was.

And you must know that folks love a whisteblower, esp. here in dramaville. Plus, the whole ugly matter got played out right before our eyes. Beyond your control.

So, IMHO, you’re pissed because your power got taken away. Hell, I wouldn’t like it either.

(And my second point, which I tried to put as delicately as possible, was that some people (including myself) feel that the mods aren’t always the most trustworthy and levelheaded at times. If, for whatever reason, it’s easier and less risky to take the backdoor (as CoP did), then others might just do the same. So perhaps one might want to consider the mods’ behavior/approachability/attitudes when blaming those who meddle anonymously.)

Or rather, “…when blaming those who feel the need to meddle anonymously.”

I hope that, in light recent events, it’s ok for me to say now that I found this hilarious.

I really want to visit London again. Cursing is a beautiful artform that us Americans seem to have forgotton.

While one moderator may not be trustworthy, I believe the staff, taken as a whole, is. If I had a grievance with one, I’d take it to another.

Then again, I’d have absolutely no problem openingly posting the results of a search to publicly linked post, so maybe I don’t have the paranoia necessary to think that the SDMB administration exists solely to find a good excuse to ban me from their message board. If I was that paranoid, why the hell would I bother posting here?

Ah, that’s a good solution and one I’ve resorted to in the past over non-sensical things. However, for those who don’t want to take the chance that it won’t be played out in front of the masses and then risk being told “nope, ya can’t do it,” I suppose whatever means (sockery, anonymous forums, et al.) will be the choice they’ll pick.

Now see, there’s something I didn’t know. I was under the impression that it was/would be fairly easy to trace the sock back to the originator. Of course, I’m not very computer savy either. As to what I’d do in a similar situation, I hope I’d have the nerve to face up to an onslaught if I’m wrong in my assumptions. However, never having been in that position, I can’t say for sure. Just that I saw another side to the same coin.

Furthermore, I don’t know if I’d use the word “commendable” to describe the actions of the Pineapple, but I do think it took some cajones. Sometimes this is my only interaction with the outside world and I take my account here very seriously and hold it dear. I wouldn’t want to do anything to harm that. However, maybe this is just an ‘agree to disagree’ issue. Thanks again for hearing me out.

I’ve been on the staff here for long enough that this kind of stuff doesn’t make me angry anymore either (not that it ever really did - I have my pet peeves; this is not one of them.) But I’m not going to sit here and say that it’s acceptable behavior. IMHO your opinion of the moderators is affecting the way you interpret their posts.

And I’m obviously not going to agree with you that dislike or fear of the moderators makes it OK or a hero for you to break the board rules.

It’s like the police catching a criminal. In some cases it’s easier than others. Some people get away with it and some don’t.

To those who are saying pineapples was “brave”-are you saying you don’t think he/she should have been banned, even if he/she was a proven sock?

I dunno about “brave,” but I do think that (at least) the sock was willing to pay the consequences for their behavior. And if it could be traced back further, that risk was included into their decision. Of course, Arnold makes it clear that isn’t as easy as it seemed to me, but if I had chosen to do something like it, I would assume my ass would be nailed pronto. Although, I suppose, my desire to see whatever information out in the open would supercede the responsibility I’d have to shoulder later.

Since, Pineapples did break the rules s/he agreed to, apparently banning was the only way to go. However, my queries really didn’t have so much to do with that as to why it was a big deal in the first place that it had been done in that manner. I certainly didn’t feel that they should be castigated as cowardly or whatever. Just, from where I sit, a little balance is needed on both sides.

So, is it just the sock that’s banned, or is the, er, foot banned as well?

Sock puppets are worn on hands.

Are you kidding me? You think firing was the worst thing that could have happened to him? Look what Haldeman and Erlichman did to Martha Mitchell.

(And this is, of course, assuming that there really was one key informant. I’m inclined to believe the theory that Woodstein invented came up with this prototype Cigarette Smoking Man in response to prodding from Bradlee. That said, however, if there really was such a person, I have no problem understanding why he would wish to remain anonymous.)

How do you figure that the person was willing to pay the consequences? If that had been the case, s/he’d have simply posted the information instead of hiding behind a sock.

Getting a sock banned isn’t exactly “paying the consequences.” And whoever did it must have been fairly confident that s/he’d avoid the real punishment of losing an account, either because enough precautions were taken or because s/he doesn’t have one. Given that the research was apparently done and posted on livejournal, no searching was required, so it might not have been a current member.

So I’m not seeing any form of courage. I’m pretty much with Arnold on this one – if you have enough desire for a public outing that you want to post it instead of mailing the information to a mod, then have the stones* to post it yourself. Using a sock is a pussy** move.

*ovaries?
**pencildick?

I just think it’s really sad that someone was so wrapped up in her online “persona” and popularity and standing on an internet message board, that she felt the need to invent or borrow a whole other identity instead of just coming onto the board and being honest with everyone.

I think what Kaitlyn did is sad, too.

Hmmm…someone pretending to be what they are not on the internet. Color me surprised.

::::thud!:::::

Red <----Male to male transsexual and still a lesbian. Honest.

I didn’t follow Kaitlyn all that closely, but I’m not surprised at all about any of this. Too much of her story sounded like somebody’s fantasy. I suspected she was full of shit, but it never occurred to me to go hunting for ways to “out” her, I just don’t have that kind of time or inclination. I feel bad that so many people here were played for fools.

Once more, I thought that they’d be “paying the consequences” by possibly having both accounts banned. Which, if they went to those lengths, meant they wanted to protect their primary one. However, it’s already been pointed out that I was wrong about how simple or easy that procedure would be. Another thought though… maybe whoever didn’t want it known that they read LJ. ::: shrug ::: I can’t imagine anyone would truly care either way, but I don’t pretend to know their motivation, just that I could see over the fence. Maybe.

Anyway, since I have absolutely no dog in this fight other than to be taken in and disappointed at the outcome, I guess I’ll leave this to everyone else to call it like they see it. I’ve already stated how I feel and now suppose I’ll be moving on to find me something for dinner.

I post these comments here only because the ATMB banning thread was closed.

  1. I’m glad that Kaitlyn’s lies were exposed. I detest deception.

  2. Kaitlyn should consider trying freelance writing.

  3. I have uncovered contradictions in the posts of another longtime doper and have questioned his integrity several times without pointing out the contradictions. He has toned down his posts quite a bit. As long as he doesn’t make any further transparent claims, is there any reason to expose him?

No. No there is not.
