Ghosts (US) Season 4 General Discussion (Spoilers in OP)

That’s Kyle, he’s to appear in the May 1 episode. I’ve read elsewhere that his character may be there to lay the groundwork for an in-universe spinoff, but of course, if that were true, the pop culture mags (Collider, Deadspin, etc.) would be all over it.

Hetty getting stoned was fun, but now that she knows ghosts can get high that way she’s going to become obsessed getting someone to smoke crack for her.

The S4 season finale is entitled “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone.” I imagine in this scenario they’re referring to Isaac, as I’ve read that he’s going to be back for the finale. Another possibility is that Old Scratch himself will appear in the episode. That would be hilarious- I imagine that no one will take him seriously and he’ll be butthurt.

In related news, when I was first reading about the Australian adaptation, a sentence I read stated “… and Satan, a misunderstood biker with a heart of gold.” In the microsecond between when I read the word “Satan” and the next word in the sentence, I thought the Aussies were actually going to include the devil as a character.

I loved the idea of another, non-Kylie Minogue alive person being able to see the ghosts, and I love the actor, but I didn’t like the episode. This season feels a little too CBS-sitcomy. Tired tropes not done well. It’s still a fine watch and I don’t think it’s in can’t-improve territory, but something is off. I don’t know if it’s acting, directing, writing, or editing. Or a combo of 2 or more. A solid B, but not generally staying consistent A for a whole episode and definitely not through multiple ones.

bolding mine

That’s a good term for it. It was one thing to have Sam be sweet and slightly naive, but everything seems to be, I don’t know, dumbed down? Homogenized? The ghosts are being just as funny but the stories have been hit and miss.

I think you mean Elias, and yes, I’m wondering if this will be a followup to the episode where Elias has been promoted to a soul recruiter(?) and the last scene was of he and Jay talking, with Jay not realizing who he’s talking to.

The best part of this episode was Sass throwing ??? out the wall - and failing to go look for her.

Yep. the whole bit about Sass’s love life was pretty cringe worthy. I claimed up thread that Ghosts apparently got rid of their best writers and hired sitcoms hacks. And it could be NBC or ABC sitcomy also, they all do the same tired jokes and set ups- the whole “someone overhears a tiny bit of a conversation and makes bad decisions based on that” is tired out, and needs to be taken out and shot. Also “coming up with a stupid lie for bad reasons and having it come undone quickly” meme can go with it.

Everything about Sass, his virginity, etc. really needed to go. I guess it is over now, but what a strange storyline to pursue/mention for years.

I’m behind on the last few episodes so I can’t comment on that. Just wanted to mention that Matthew Baynton (Thomas from Ghosts UK and played the actor playing Pete on the U.S. version) is on the latest season of Taskmaster.

It would just come back as a ghost.

Of only Patience had shown some patience she would’ve some real evil.

And so we say goodbye to our ghost friends and their Living friends for a few months. This season’s cliffhanger has higher stakes but less urgency, I think. I imagine they’ll get some mileage out of Jay’s fear of dying and going to hell for 2-3 episodes next season and then come up with some comical solution. They can’t stretch this out for a whole season like they did with Flower’s disappearance (due to actress Sheila Carrasco’s pregnancy).

When I see the first S5 spoilers, likely in August or September, I’ll start a Season 5 General Discussion thread.

Also, my prediction that the season would end with a pregnant Sam didn’t come to pass. Maybe they’ll take a page from the British original and make a pregnancy the cliffhanger for the penultimate season.

I wonder if Patience will end up being the one to defeat Elias Woodstone, and save Jay’s soul.

Ooooo, I like that idea!

That could be funny, but I hope the character doesn’t get eliminated. Scenes with Elias are some of my favorites.

Having a baby has ruined a LOT of TV shows.

Patience was more likable this appearance. I liked how even she was surprised that Pete facepalmed Alberta. And after all, she was right about evil coming to Woodstone. If only she waited a bit longer.

I really like Utkarsh Ambudkar (Jay) as an actor. He’s the perfect embodiment of a Millennial. Goofy as heck but also chill. His reaction to finding out he sold his soul seemed very funny to me.

Yes, that was well done. (I just caught up with the finale today.) Great to have Matt Walsh back–his character is such a contrast with his Veep character. (Acting!)

I’m skeptical about Patience saving the day for Jay in the next season; so far she’s been consistently ‘the antagonist’. Of course with sitcoms it’s very common for antagonist characters to be turned into cuddly characters eventually.

I agree with those who didn’t really warm up to the Sass-and-his-virginity storyline. I expect the actor may be relieved that the writers will have to come up with something else for him.
