It wasn’t that long ago. I can tell you when the Duke/Carolina rivalry started. It was shortly after the N&O ran Jim Valvano out on a rail. State’s Chancellor selected his successor specifically not to have a winning team. Yes, this it true. Coach Robinson told this an alumni dinner I was attending.
And yes, the N&O had it out for Valvano. My cousin’s husband quit the N&O shortly after Coach Valvano’s death because it made him sick to his stomach to see “so many people gleeful over a man’s death.”
Just wanted to offer my condolences to the Blue Devil fans for their team losing to the best team in the nation.
