Good Alive: The Evil Dead forbidden thread

Assuming that Mahaloth is telling the truth: I can’t really fault his choice of asking about third parties, but were I in his shoes, I would have asked about Scum. I can never really find third parties anyway (aside from the obvious, like catching them in a lie, or just plain dumb luck), but Scum can be found by their interactions with each other, and knowing how many of them there are can be useful in unraveling those interactions. In other words, I can see being more curious about the number of third parties, but I don’t know how to make use of that information, but I do know how to make use of the information about number of Scum.

The other question, though, is why Mahaloth would have waited to use his power. It seems to me that the information you get is effectively the same no matter when you use it, since given the number at any one moment of time, it’s a simple enough matter to find the number at any other given moment of time.

  1. I was waiting at first because I thought perhaps we would gather some info. about the game through lynches and Night Deaths. It was a gamble since I could obviously be NK’ed before I used it, but I thought it was minor enough a power to wait a bit.

  2. I chose 3rd parties because I think once we know that and we consider how many Scum we’ve killed, we can start to estimate better the scum total. If I learned how many scum we have left, we might have been able to guess on 3rd parties, but it would seem, to me, a more difficult guess. It is really hard to predict how many 3rd parties there are in a game.

Anyway, the choice was made and the info. is out there and I’m vanilla now. I am just glad I have not died with my power unused or unshared.

Oh dear.

ouchy ouchy ouchy.

shoot it’s one thing to accidentally hit a thread. but then to post in response to content.

ouchy ouchy ouchy.

Personally I find all of the nitpicking of the claimed PM ridiculous. “The” was capitalized? Meaningless. “You know from armies of evil” is perfectly grammatical, if a bit obscure, but it certainly follows story’s general style. And as for “once per game”, I would note that we used the exact same phrasing for some one-shot powers in Malazan, so I don’t see anything wrong with that.

For what it’s worth, I have no intention of modkilling Mahaloth. It is not actually against the rules, in the strictest sense, to read in here, and I argued vehemently against making accidental entry into this thread a modkilling offense.

I’m’a let it go.

You the boss. But FWIW, I disagree. Why call this the “forbidden” thread? Why not just have two threads where all posters and observers can interpost and mix freely? If I go start posting my thoughts and ideas in the game thread will you have a problem with that? Why or why not?

Sure, it’s impossible to police game participants reading this thread. But posting? Easy to detect. Easy to punish. Cheaters must die.

FWIW also I have no axe to grind against Mahaloth. Good player. Good mod (in LoTR). But IMO he fucked up and he deserves to die!

Also, just to back it up… Mahaloth read this. This is information that other game participants are not privy to unless they also snuck into the forbidden thread. To me, that’s cheating. He has information he should not have.

I saw that as a dialectical peculiarity. In most dialects, it’s ungrammatical, but I’ve encountered it before, and it does seem like it might be storyteller’s style. Guiri is European (Irish, IIRC), and so might reasonably not have encountered that particular dialect before, which would be why it stood out to him.

Even if one takes it to not be grammatical, though, all that would prove is that somebody made a mistake, without proving who it was. It seems equally plausible to me that Storyteller might have made a grammatical error as that a lying Scum might.

He says that he only read the third page, so he would have missed that. Assuming, of course, that he was honest about that, but then, we’re implicitly assuming that sort of honesty from all the players (since anyone at all could have read that and just not posted here).

Pretty sure that GuiriEnEspana is spanish.

Nope. I think it means Foreigner in Spain or similar. Didn’t he say that in the main thread?

I think it was in one of the spoiled discussions for LotR that he said it.

I don’t know if I get why **Mahaloth **was so worried about posting in here - story’s rules clearly state that players can post where they like, when they like, about whatever they like. Maybe it’s against the spirit of the game, and maybe it’ll get him lynched because of that (though it looks more likely it’ll be for his claimed PM instead), but it’s not against the rules of this game.

I can see why he admitted it; I might have phrased it differently.

And I like Guiri’s analysis, but he’s wrong on the two grammatical points. “you know from evil” and “you might even be useful at that” are perfectly fine, and IMO, fit with story’s style. It’s unfortunate that he’s unfamiliar with the construction; it’s pretty common. Although I think the latter needs a comma.

Well, in general in Mafia games on this board, posting in the forbidden thread will get you modkilled. Not unreasonable to think that story would regard this as a modkillable offense.

“You know from <whatever>” is a yiddish-ism; Americans & especially those from the northeast tend to vastly overrate how widely understood that dialect is. (Eg. my wife was stunned that some of my relatives at our post-wedding brunch didn’t know from “lox”).

I do agree about the comma.

OK, so a player in the game (not Mahaloth) has accidentally (actually, it was my fault) gained access to extremely sensitive spoiler information; the player will need to be replaced or modkilled.

My preference is always to replace if possible. I realize this is a longshot, but is there anyone in here who has been following closely enough to sub in at this stage? Technically it is still only Night Three, so it’s still fairly early, but I know a lot of posts have gone by and it might be difficult. Still, if anyone feels up to the challenge, I would much prefer it to a modkill.

I’ll execute a modkill at Dawn (approximately 1:30PM tomorrow [Saturday]) if no one has volunteered before then.

sure, story, i’ll go for it.

Oh, what the hell. The Show must go on!
