How is that not using them? That is precisely what Facebook is used for, I thought.
Then you should probably wait until more people join. It’s like a tighter, cleaner version of Facebook with some good ideas from Twitter thrown in. Hopefully it will become the dominant social networking hub. But if you’re not really using Facebook or Twitter now, you’re not going to get much out of it until most of your friends are there.

This. I don’t think I have ever posted a status (or whatever they’re called) on it. It’s very handy for keeping track of numerous tornado chasers, though.
