Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Hold down either the r2 or l2 to look out of the car, then hit O to fire.

And now I’m off to play some more.

bernse: There’s a seaplane behind the film studio, though I’m not sure if it appears before you do the mission that requires it.

AudreyK: You can get the VCN helicopter from the ground. If you walk around the front of the building, there’s a door you can enter which takes you to the roof.

You’re usually given a weapon for those. Blow 'em away with whatever weapon you get equipped with. You may have to wander around or wander in circles (or even just aim the camera in another direction) in order to find more guys to kill.

Does running them over count towards the total if you’re given, say, an automatic shotgun at the onset of the rampage? We’ve never tried it, as the weapons are usually more fun that smooshing with cars. Also, I’ve only come across one rampage that specified that I run gang members over and it was disgustingly easy.

Thanks for the additional info on the copters, guys.

Just bought the movie studio. I collected all the cars for Sunshine Autos, and with income from the mansion, we’re generating $14k per day without having to kill anyone or destroy anything. But that’s no fun, so we go out and do it anyway.

In a rampage you have to use the weapon they give you to kill the targets. Running them over doesn’t count, but it is sometimes helpful to grab a car to look for more targets.

I’m playing GTAIII on a PC (No Vice City for me for a year or so) and haven’t figured out how to shoot from the car yet. Any suggestions?

I believe the kills only count when you use the weapon provided. If you’re looking for a pretty easy rampage to complete, find the one near the stadium. You’re given a flamethrower and there are a ton of gang members there. The combination makes it pretty easy to get 20 in the time allotted. It’s the only rampage in GTAIII or Vice City that I’ve gotten on the first try.

One thing I really like about VC over GTA3 is that the rampages are doable now. I don’t know if the original targetting system was that lousy (though it was at least a little lousy), but whereas I could finish maybe half a dozen of the original’s rampages, I’ve managed every rampage I’ve come across in VC, finishing maybe a third of them on my first try.

Now I’m torn as to which extracurricular activity to do first - the races that you can enter at Sunshine Autos, or start on my tank collection…

When I do the rampages, I’ve found that the gang members always spawn behind me. So I’ll walk a little, then turn around and go back and there’s usually two or three packs of em. I’ve never had a lack of people to kill, it’s a matter of staying alive and not getting busted.

You cant shoot from the car in GTA 3. That was a new feature from Vice City. At least I can’t find any way to shoot from inside the car nor have I ever seen it mentioned on any spoiler site.

Yes, you can. I just discovered it the other day, actually. You push the R2 or L2 buttons to look out the side of the car, then press the fire key (O). It doesn’t work with long guns, but the MAC 10 works and, I assume without having yet tried it, the pistol.

Just small machine guns allow drive bys, pistols and other guns do not (shame, if i could drive by rocket launch…)

I thought you could use the pistol for drive-bys in GTA3… at least it seemed like a change when I noticed I could only use the SMG for drive-bys in Vice City.

I’ve been reading too many Buffy threads. For a moment, I was wondering where Sarah Michelle Gellar was in the game and how she fit into the storyline.

Nope, in GTA3 you couldn’t do drive by shootings with the pistol. Only the uzi.

I have liked the rampages in Vice City. They are a little bit easier than GTA3, I mean some of the rampages in GTA3 were a little bit less than impossible, if you tried them after the gangs were angry with you. (I am thinking specicially of the rampage were you are supposed to kill all of the Hatian (? I think. The one on the second island that hung out closest to your hideout.) gangmembers with the rocket launcher. That was tough!
The only problem I have with the VC rampages is that whatever gun you use seems to be taken away from your regular gun selection after the rampage is done. Say you have a rampage that uses a Python. If you have a python in your weaponry already, after the rampage is over, you lose all your Python ammo.
The rampage near the lighthouse were you actually have to use your car to run over as many gangmembers as possible is quite fun.

I finally got up to Level 12 in Vigilante Mode tonight. That was tough! But, worth it. Now, I need to get past the Level 10 hump in Paramedic missions, and try my hand at Pizza missions. (I haven’t done any of those yet.) I used the FBI cars for the most part. The great thing about them is you are able to bring them to the Pay And Spray to get spruced up. FBI Rancher allows you to do that as well, but it doesn’t seem as strong as the car. (I stole the Rancher after the first Hatian mission. You get rid of all your stars, and you can just throw the driver out.)

This reminds me. One of my favorite things to do when not playing actual missions is to drive around and get my stars up as far as possible. Then, I try to steal a Tank, or an FBI car, or whatever. I did the same thing in the old game. I loved driving around in those much too fast FBI cars.

After I finished up my vigilante missions, I bought the ramshackle save spot and tried out the riot mission for the motorcycle gang. That was fun! I was able to steal a tank after the mission was done. That seems like an easy spot to steal the tank. You need to get that many stars anyhow, after it is done, hope the guy gets out and hop in driving the tank around looking for bribes.

So, now I own the car lot and have a tank ready to be used. Sweet. Too bad, I could have probably used the tank for vigilante missions and gotten to level 12 without all the cursing at the TV screen when I was arrested or blown up.
Actually, when I had a tank in GTA3 it was always rather difficult to use it for vigilante mode. Too slow.

Also. I got up to 50 packages today. With 50 you get the laser sighted sniper rifle. But, I like the old style one better. An easy place to build up old style sniper ammo is at your mansion on Starfish Island. There is one right in your hedge maze.,

Which reminds me of some fun stuff to see from the helicopter.

  • The RockStar logo shaped pool
  • The bikini shaped pool
  • the mall from above, sometimes you can see through the roof.
  • In the water, some big ship wrecks can be seen when you are close enough to the water.
  • Other helicopters and planes with banners that you can fly right through.

Well. I have ranted and raved enough. VC went back to being fun tonight, my obession with getting that Vigilante Level 12 was taking some of the joy out of the game for me. Now I can go back to driving cars that allow me to listen to cranky nudists, and New Wave!

pat

trust me, you WILL like the prize you get for this one!

Ooh, what’s the prize?

In Downtown, there’s a back alley that looks like a perfect square minus one corner on the onscreen map. In that alley, there is (sometimes? always? Haven’t tested the frequency) a FBI Washington.

Have you seen sharks in the water? The map insert mentions shark attacks, so I was amused to spot a shark in the water near Prawn Island. KKB thought it could have been the movie studio’s fake shark, and that could be true as shooting at it with my sniper rifle did nothing. Still, kinda cool.

Oh God yes. It scares the hell out of me when I realize that I just saw a car that I liked and considered stealing it.

MURDER SIMULATOR!!! MURDER SIMULATOR!!!

I’ve seen sharks and dolphins, sniper rifles have no effect (i think they are just background images, like bubbles on the water are) but i haven’t rocketlaunched one or shot at one with a big machine gun yet. Finally got fireproof, but the Firetruck mission kept going! ran out of time on level 13

Anyone have any tips for the Death Row mission where you have to go rescue your buddy? I was thinking that maybe I’ll try to find cover and snipe everyone. Think that would work?

Maybe, but I suspect it would take too long. The way I did it was just barrel in at full speed, knocking the car over on the two guys crouching at the gate. Then I just hopped out and used the Uzi with auto-target to kill everyone. If you take it easy it’s pretty easy to kill all the guys without taking much damage, and then there’s a conveniently located escape car.
