Great things about a Trump presidency.

Posted by me, back in August:

Me, just prior to the election:

For the past few years I’ve frequently been irritated by the many on-air speakers who have misused Teddy Roosevelt’s phrase: of course he was fond of using “bully” as a synonym for ‘wonderful,’ ‘excellent,’ or ‘superb.’ Thus he was saying that the Presidency offers a superb platform for getting one’s message across. But in recent years, people ignorant of the term’s origin seem to have decided that it meant that Roosevelt was celebrating his ability to be a bully.

Now that meaning makes perfect sense, of course.

The Trump administration does not seem like it is going to be too concerned with human rights anywhere, least of all China. If he loves Putin for saying good things about him but doesn’t mind Russia’s rampant bombing of civilians and civilian targets (including schools and hospitals) in non-Assad-controlled Syria, anything China or other countries do human rights-wise is small beans by comparison.

Trump’s only statements critical of China have been their trade/currency practices. Since he himself has openly expressed U.S. personnel should engage in torture and should kill the families of terrorists, human rights are the last thing on his mind.

I’m a dollar richer.

Heaven leaps to mind.

I thought you said:

Since we ‘finally have a president who won’t cave’, does that not imply that Obama did?

Warren G. Harding and Franklin Pierce are probably very happy right now.

Also, the only other significant territorial issues that China has outside of the South China Sea are over Taiwan (where there has been longstanding bipartisan consensus to vow to supply Taiwan with weapons, but maintain deliberate “official” ambiguity about whether we would militarily respond to a Chinese invasion and to dissuade them from declaring independence) and between China and India over a glacier on the Tibet border. I don’t think the U.S. has ever taken any official position or cared that much about this issue, except to expect that China and India resolve it peacefully after the brief border war they had in the 1960s. There is a dispute between China and Japan over some rocks in the East China Sea, but the U.S. has gone on record as saying that it takes no official position about which country has ultimate sovereignty over the rocks but that they are covered by the U.S.-Japan mutual self-defense treaty since they are currently being administered by Japan. That’s certainly not surrendering anything or caving to China.

So, if not Obama, then which president has caved to China’s territorial claims?

The real problem is that in part due to right-wing media and its repeated assertions, Obama has been portrayed as weak and feckless and this is just assumed to be true across the board by everyone who isn’t an Obama fan. Evidence and reasoned argument takes a backseat (if they are in the car at all) to gut perceptions and feelings. Truthiness reigns supreme.

Great Things About A Trump Presidency:

  1. The first female president won’t be so horribly flawed that it makes us think twice about female presidents.

  2. Young people will become more actively engaged in civics and politics.

  3. We will probably see the repeal of parts of the NFA (first wrt suppressors and then sbr and sbs)

From a British perspective, we get to see a bit less of Farage and hopefully Katie Hopkins will put her money where her mouth is and move there, so there’s that…

Why would you think his election would accomplish that at all? The Trump subreddit, The_Donald, has this as its rule: No Dissenters or SJWs. It’s actually gotten to be a regular in-joke just how easy it is to get banned there. It’s the ultimate safespace on Reddit.

Nah, in true Trump flip flop style and the beginning of his walkback on the promise of a massive wall… a fence is OK now.

Trump is a more orange and less intelligent version of Pat Buchannan, no?

Well at least we know you are a TRUE Trump supporter and flip flop with a much alacrity as the Orange Judas. :smack:

One good thing about electing Trump is that the racists are all going to come out of the woodwork and self identify. For example, these two.

America will put up with a lot, but you mess with Michelle and its your ass. I would be proud to add her restraining order to my collection.

Whoever follows him will get a Nobel Peace Prize!

Great things about a Trump presidency.

Since I’ve been eligible to vote there have only been two presidential elections that didn’t turn out my way (1992 & 2004), so I’ve spent the better part of my adult life having to defend the president who I helped elect to his detractors. As worried as I am about the next four years, I have to admit that it will be nice to take a break.

The only three things I’m hoping for are increased arms sales to allies, an improved military and a conservative SCOTUS. Everything else terrifies or deeply worries me.

Don, Jr. will get a Nobel Peace prize? Well, that would be surprising, I must say.

Apparently, we will also see a large proliferation of TLAs.
