[voice of experience]Spaz, for cross-stitch, figure out what size fabric you need, then add about three more inches around on each side. Seriously. In the end, too much is far easier to deal with than too little. Unfortunately a lesson learned through experience. Also, I usually use masking tape around the edges. Keeps them from coming undone, comes off easily, doesn’t damage fabric, and is cheap.[/voice of experience]
In case anyone is interested (and even if they aren’t), the ribs turned out pretty good. Too much salt in the marinade, but manageable. Basically I put in a tablespoon of everything in the herbs & spices bags: Coriander seeds, peppercorns (both ground in the grinder), basil, garlic powder, thyme, cumin (a heaping tablespoon there), kosher salt, a good bit of red pepper flakes (of course!), the rest of the oregano, savory, a couple cloves of garlic I had left (minced), some olive oil, and pulpy orange juice. I should have cut the salt in half and doubled the orange juice. When the ribs were done I painted them with bottled BBQ sauce to cut the saltiness a bit.
It’s distinctly autumnal here today. Yesterday evening it started to rain just as I was walking up the street so good timing there, and by the time I got in the house it was coming down in buckets. Carried on like that all night too so the cats were not best pleased as it means they stay in the house instead of going outside all night.
Today it’s sunny but cool so I have been delving into my autumn clothing already because you just can’t tell what the rest of the day will turn out like. I have a team meeting later this morning so I’ll be off down the road for a walk as the meeting’s in a totally different building to the one I’m based in.
It’s Fat Club tonight and the scales this morning accused me of turning into a heifer so that’s not going to turn out well. I’d better hide in case Swampy thinks that makes me a prime target for the big ass smoker since I obviously have a big ass!
We’ve been told temperatures are going down. The general consensus around the office is “we’ll believe it when we see it”.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’.
Have no fear BooFae, you don’t have a Boston <snerk> butt <snerk>.
Ruble smoked meatloaf sounds intriguin’. So does smoked potato whiskey.
Johnny I cheat and use a prepared rub that’s called <snerk> Butt <snerk> Rub. It’s cheap, comes in a big bottle and lasts a while. It works because I’m too lazy to grow and otherwise mash/grind up my own herbs and seasonings.
I lurve the taste of smoked meats so I don’t put any kind of sauce on it. BBQ sammiches are another thing altogether and I like sauce on my sammiches.
Hi Haze! Happy new teevee!
Ribs sound good, Johnny. Do you deliver to Ohio?
I have to ask: how did IB blow up the old TV?
Off to work…
Hugs all.

Up, caffeinated, off to irk. Booster Club board meeting tonight.
Our old family recipe homegrown vodka has a danger for those not born into my family - it tastes like water. Somewhere between bottled and maybe one of the early style power waters. Problem is it runs about 160proof. It doesn’t have that back-bite of corn shine as a warning. I had some friends get really messed up not pacing themselves well as a result. So what I wanted was basically to add some sort of flavor that says “Beyond this point there be Dragons”. Some liquid smoke and flat Pepsi gives it more a look and feel of rye. Since I started doing that I haven’t had anyone get sick-drunk. Drunk enough for naked voodoo but not enough to get sick.
The formal recipe I saw once called for actual loaf pans but we rarely use them even in the normal oven - we both like crunchy edges. I will warn anyone who tries it though that there is this certain stage in cooking when the bread starts to expand and the grease is oozing out when you have this Frankenstein moment of “Just what the Hell have I created?” But that passes and the result is yummy. I usually run apple and hickory with 75% of the wood being dry and the rest on a three day soak.
I belonged to a booster club in high school. We could have the tires and battery off of your ------------ ooops. Different kind of “booster”.
Never mind. :smack:
Good morning, all you bright and happy people! And even if you don’t fall into any of those categories!
It’s been a rough morning so far, with two major systems down. I’m responsible for one, and was responsible for the other by default: out of all the others that could do something about it, I was the only one here. One was out on vacation, one had a doctor’s appointment, and one doesn’t get here til 10:30.
Up and had coffee and now I must get to work. I am really not interested in getting back to work after 4 days off. Specially when it is a data mining/manipulation kind of day. Oh and phone interviews which I hate. I really really don’t like my job right now…right better get to it!
I’m in the same general geographic area as FCM and tarragon918, so I, too, had an awesome weekend weather-wise! It was sooo nice to turn off the AC and open the windows. I closed up the house and turned the AC back on last night, though, because it’s going to be in the 90s today and I have zero tolerance for humidity (and the top floor of my townhouse gets yucky very quickly).
I did pretty much nothing all weekend, except take Bailey to the dog park each day. So nice outside! On Sunday I got a little productive and straightened up my music room a bit, but mostly it was three days of random reading, internet-ing, TV watching, and putzing. Ahhhhh.
I was supposed to go to Baltimore tomorrow for a meeting about some possible freelance work, but this morning I sent an email to the consultant and said that I’ve decided not to go forward with the project. I thought about it all weekend, and there are just all kinds of red flags. I feel a little bad, but mostly I feel like I dodged a bullet. Phew!
My current program is set to end in about a month (apologies if this is the millionth time I’ve mentioned it: I sometimes forget what I’ve told y’all, plus I never expect anyone to remember my personal dramas!), and this afternoon I have a phone interview with another company. I’ve been with my company for almost four years, and I don’t really want to leave, but this is also the fourth time I’ve been looking for work since I joined them. I managed to find suitable internal openings the last three times, but there really aren’t any right now. So, outside of the company I look. Part of me is kind of psyched about this phone interview.
The downside to having a 3-day weekend where I didn’t do much except hang out with the dog is that today I miss the dog…
The weather here went straight from hot summer to fall on Sept 1st. Very much like it looked at the calendar and decided it was time for summer to be over. Today’s rainy and chilly, and I want to go out for soup for lunch, but I have food at home that I really should eat instead.
We went to Milwaukee for the weekend for KT’s grandfather’s 90th birthday party. All of the grandkids and great grandkids made it so there were about 50 people there. A bit crazy for someone from a small family! And unfortunately, we had to drive instead of flying down like we’d planned. It’s been really windy here since Friday, and that’s not really good flying weather. So… 5+ hours in the car each way. Yippee. At least I got my very first sock done on the way back! And its mate started. It’s far from perfect, but I learned a lot and I think the second one will be much better.
We’ve had rain for two days, because of TS Hermine. Threats of flooding, too! Which brings the temps down, but it’s hoomid as hell… I’m ready for some fall weather.
I labored on Labor Day, and cleaned my house pretty good. Two bathrooms, vacuumed the living room and bedroom, dusted, and mopped the kitchen floor. As well as put away all stray laundry.
I made some ribs yesterday, but stupidly burned half of them. My new grill has different settings than my old grill, and off is at the top, not the bottom. My excuse is it was pouring down rain when I put them on, and I was in a hurry. But hubby came to the rescue, and ran out and got some chicken legs to go with the rest of the ribs. And we had Mr Rebo’s awesome baked beans, and cole slaw, corn on the cob, and canteloupe.
Back to work today, but I only have to work three days this week. Yay!
Started working out again today. I’ve got that noodley limb feeling but I’m happy that I took that step to get started again.
What is it with Johnny and Rebo grilling in the rain??
If you like barbecued piggies
And lighting coals in the rain
And your grill has a cover
Then it’s really no pain…
LOL!
I like barbecued pig - but not pina coladas!
(It was worth it!)
My rub, off the top of my head:
Brown sugar
onion powder
garlic powder
oregano
ancho chili powder
chipotle chili powder
sweet paprika
smoked paprika
cumin
ground coriander
cayenne
thyme
kosher salt
or
Raindrops keep fallin’ on my food
But that isn’t enough to break me from my happy mood
I just love to grill
So raindrops are fallin’ on my food, they keep fallin’
Changing the rub subject slightly, here is the rub I used on my lunch chicken for this week:
Dry Barbecue Rub
1/2 C white sugar
1/2 C salt (I used kosher salt, mostly because I had more of it on hand)
1/4 C paprika
1/8 C powdered garlic
1/8 C black pepper
Add ingredients in a big plastic bag, and shake well to mix. Then add chicken pieces and shake again to cover. Much better grilled than baked, but I do both. This recipe makes enough to coat one standard sized cut up fryer.
If someone makes both white meat chicken and pork butt for the same dinner, would that be a meal of tits and ass?
