Grimm Season 2

There is a long thread on season 1

While this show (IMHO) doesn’t have the following to justify one thread per episode, there is enough for one thread per season.

Season two starts tonight (August 13, 9 PM Central), at least in the US

Well, that was fun. A lot more funny lines than usual – or have I just forgotten that side of the show?

Honestly, I thought the new title sequence was just OK, but I definitely like what it says about the network’s opinion of the show. It’s not going to bother doing anything unless it’s thinking that the show has some real legs.

It sure appeared as though Rosalee and Monroe were getting passionate in the preview for next week. I was a little surprised, because it seems a little early to play that card. However, the episode is entitled “The Kiss,” so I am thinking that perhaps some kind of supernatural love potion will turn out to be responsible.

My oldest daughter and I have been following it faithfully. She was at a sleepover tonight. We thought the new season started tomorrow, I caught it by accident. When she called to check in I took perverse pleasure in our conversation…

Her: Just checking in
Me: OK, what time will you be home tomorrow?
H: Around noon
M: Cool
H: What are you doing?
M: Watching Grimm
H: What?! Wait…I thought…It’s TONIGHT?!

ANYWAY…

spoiler alert

for some reason I don’t trust the mother - it just doesn’t feel right.

zoid, I agree with you on that point and so does everyone in my family

I’d be inclined to chime in on that one, zoid.

I’m questioning what might well be a major plot hole. At the start of season 1, Marie told Nick that a Grimm only gains his/her abilities and becomes an active Grimm when the preceding one in that bloodline dies, and that there’s only one active in a bloodline at a time. If Mom (can’t recall her name) is to be believed, which could be dubious, there was a time at which three in the immediate family (Mom, Marie, and their father) were all active at once and working as a team.

On a more trivial note, I don’t think I’d ever before noticed that Renard is wearing what appears to be a wedding ring. In the one episode last season where we saw him in his home, he appeared to be living alone. Do we know anything about his personal life?

Any Francophones following the show? How good is Reynard’s French accent? Does he seem to actually speak French, or is he learning that dialogue phonetically? He sounds okay to me, but I don’t know enough to tell.

I had no idea it was starting so soon! I got a Hulu update about it, and deleted it, thinking it was a show from last season, then I saw this thread, retrieved it from the trash can, and saw it said Season 2. I’ll watch it this afternoon!

His French is good but it is clearly not his maternal tongue.

There are several reasons why the mother seems legit:

  1. Nick recognized her; she did not identify herself to him. Yes, it’s been awhile, but if Nick had any photos of his mother, he would know what she looked like.
  2. She knew things like the location of the hidden drawer. It would be unlikely in the extreme for anyone other than a family member to know it.
  3. Monroe scented another Grimm before he saw the mother, so she’s clearly a Grimm. Nick and Monroe would have known if she were anything else, too.
  4. She saw the coins. If she were out to get them, she would have taken them (and would have fought Nick for them).

Now, it’s quite possible (and even likely) that Mom has an agenda she’s not telling Nick, and is not being straight with what she wants to do, but clearly she is his mother and a Grimm, even if she ends up betraying him. (She did say that Grimms worked for the bad guys at first.)

I suspect she’ll save Nick at the beginning of next week’s episode.

According to Wikipedia (other sources such as IMDB agree), his actor, Sasha Roiz, was born in Israel (Russian Jewish ancestry), and his family moved to Toronto when he was 7. IMDB adds that he speaks at least three languages (English, French, and Russian are listed).

Thank you 'zoid! I thought I might be the only one. Dollars to donuts after they have a mother son moment killing the saber toothed dude, she disappears for the rest of the season cuz she was only after the coins all along.

Thanks – he does have that “foreign” vibe that makes him a good fit for the character.

re: Nick’s mom:

I don’t think it will be so simple as a quick disappearance, but agree with everyone who thinks her motivations are way more complex than we know yet.

I hated the new title sequence–seemed cheesy and a little too desperate to explain the premise. Plus it highlights Grimm’s shark jump moment for me: Hitler being a wessen. Not enough eye-rolls in the world. Anyway, I don’t think a new title sequence is a sign of network confidence. Probably the opposite; I’d be surprised if Grimm finishes this season.

Not nearly enough Monroe this episode.

Also, the coins can only be destroyed in Mt. Doom? There are seven keys given to the seven royal families that lead to a super magical item? I’m not really liking this direction the show is taking. I get that they’re trying to set up a season-long arc so they can get back to the Monster of the Week, but it seems really weak.

Kimura also noted there were two Grimms.

I don’t mind the new opening, but I hated the voiceover. I heard it got better than usual ratings this episode, so I think it will last the season.

The first episode this season was very arc based, so it might have been hard for new viewers to follow. I rolled my eyes too that the coins can only be destroyed at the site of their forging.

Did Monroe and the girl notice two Grimms, or were they only saying they smelled someone else there, and the woman said “And, whatever it is it is female!” I didn’t think they knew right away it was a Grimm. But, yeah, the bad guy did know and let our Grimm’s boss know.

Yeah, it’s for sure Burkhardt’s Mom, but I sure wasn’t happy about him trusting her so quickly. When he took her to his secret hideout I was like “Come on, man!”

I thought they gave short shrift to the fact that he is friend with wessen. “Do you know that’s a bluvolt!” (I forget what they are called) “Yes. He is my friend.” And, that’s it. No argument or anything. I thought there would be some discussion and he would talk about how they can be good, too. I would have enjoyed that, because one of the aspects of the show that I enjoy is the friendship with Monroe and hearing it justified aloud would have been nice.

I fast forwarded through the new opening, so I apparently missed the fact that they had the Hitler scene in there. That’s too bad, because that was my absolute least favorite part of last season. By far. Unnecessary crap. Apparently, I am so outside the loop that they think it will sell the show. Oh well.

Great first episode. Lots of nice twists. It seems obvious that the Mom is going to save him. It would be interesting if that is solved a little bit differently. Nice start to the season. Although, I don’t know if I like the fact that they are showing it on Mondays if they just plan to shuffle it off to Fridays. Isn’t it hard for a show to build up an audience when it is moved around a lot?

I was looking forward to that too. Maybe we’ll get some next week.

If anyone missed the show Monday (and watches old-fashioned broadcast TV), it’s rerunning in the usual time slot this evening.

Ya, I recorded it Monday for watching it tonight (Friday is my usual make popcorn and watch a movie / TV episode night). When i was done I flipped through the channels, and here the episode is being rerun.

At least I skipped the commercials…

Brian

I don’t recall Aunt Marie ever saying that, but if she did she was clearly wrong and/or lying, since Nick started to get his abilities quite a while before she croaked.

The new opening was dumb, clearly meant for n00bs tho, so I can forgive it.
