Hamburgers Or Cheeseburger?

OK. Provolone I might try. We’ll see if we can work hamburgers into the rotation this week or next.

If the option is stuff like Kraft cheese slices or no cheese? I’ll take the no cheese.

Can’t stand those cheese slices, they’re just nasty, doesn’t matter if it’s on a burger or anything else.

Cheeseburger. I’m fine with American. Hell I’ll take a melting hunk of Velveeta if we have no sliced Kraft Deli American. I draw the line at those pre-packaged slices of cheese “food”.

I only get cheeseburgers if it’s at McDonald’s and I’m specifically craving really-bad-for-me food.

Otherwise, I don’t see the point of the cheese.

Wow, I’m really surprised. I figured cheeseburgers would be the minority.

I’m no food snob about fast food–I love me a fried chicken sandwich–but I dislike every fast food burger I’ve tried (including the much-vaunted ones like Hardee’s). But a good homemade burger, preferably on the barbecue, is a thing of beauty. And a few restaurants around will do one right, also. Ground beef is so ridiculously delicious when cooked medium-rare (when you can find a place that’ll do it) or even medium that cheese sounds like gilding the lily: it’d be like putting cheese on a steak. Yeah, people do it, but it doesn’t appeal to me.

This. I am pro-GOOD cheese, and most fast food restaurants simply do not have good cheese.

At my undergrad dorm cafeteria, I was constantly ordering a hamburger, and getting a cheeseburger. WTF? :stuck_out_tongue:

For me, the cheese is the only reason worth eating a burger (ok, maybe not the only reason, but the best reason). Yummy gooey melty cheese. I prefer American on my cheeseburgers, but pepper jack is great too…mmmm…melty cheeseburgers.

I’m the only person who wants to stand up and say “it depends”?

Mood is one reason, but so is the quality of the meat. My Dad gets cases of hamburgers from that guy at work I’ve mentioned before, and I get about half of them or so. They really need extra stuff on them to taste good, and cheese, even American, is a good choice.

On the other hand, if I’m making it from scratch, cheese may be superfluous. But, then again, if it’s actual cheese, instead of American, it can really help. It takes out the need for even the very light layer of mayo mentioned above. And if it’s a white cheese? Mmm, mmm, mmm.

No, I’m right there with you.

Fast-food style burgers? Usually with cheese. Made at home? Usually without.

A couple of us beat you to it.

Bah. Ate there in Waikiki, wasn’t impressed.

I’m definitely a cheeseburger guy. At family barbecues or fast-food places, I’ll eat whatever orange square they’re calling cheese, but I prefer cheddar as the minimum - the sharper the better. I had Stilton on a burger a couple weeks ago, and that was pretty good.

Plain burgers can be good, but it really depends on the quality of the beef and whatever else you’re putting on it.

This thread is making me awful hungry.

For a cheeseburger, of course…why do you ask?

I prefer my Royale with cheese.

Just what I would have said. Any kind of cheese is great except those pre-packaged slices.

Double cheeseburger - gruyere. And no fast food burgers thanks - that ain’t ever a burger…

American cheese kind of jacks up the flavor of a hamburger. I like my burgers with big wet slices of tomato, maybe some mustard &/or onions, & lettuce. Cheese is sticky & gluey & does not belong.

For those who say that cheese masks the flavor of the meat, my opinion on that stand is this: if I want to taste meat I’ll have a steak. (Not knocking those of you who like your burgers sans cheese, just saying I’ll not be joining your club, nor requesting your newsletter).

A burger needs (IMO): good meat, good cheese (sharp cheddar is good; port wine is also lovely), a couple of slices of bacon, some dill pickle chips, some A-1 sauce. If there are sauteed mushrooms, so much the better. You can leave off the lettuce, tomato and onions. If I want a salad, I’ll eat a salad.

Funny…I know three kids who won’t eat cheese on their burgers including my own son. The grown-ups associated with these kids all love cheeseburgers.

My (recently) expatriate Wisconsinite boyfriend agrees.

As for me? Bring on the muthafuggin’ cheese! Even the crappy, plasticky American cheese (though real American cheese is actually quite tasty). I love it all. Never tried bleu cheese on a burger, but I’m willing to give it a shot, in small amounts.

Yep, I’m going to get some regular hamburgers from Burger King right now.
