The boaters at the harbor are having a Yankee Doodle Dinghy parade! It’s my first time going with my nephews.
Hoping the morons with illegal fireworks dont start a brush fire.
My wife is at work earning double and a half; I’m sitting here doing what I usually do when she’s at work: Reading, eating, computing, feeding cats, doing dishes…
My earlobe did not require stitches. She told me “it’s too deep to consider superficial, but not deep enough for stitches.” She cleaned it up and tried to put a band-aid on as best she could, gave me a tetanus shot, and prescribed both an oral and topical antibiotic. She also prescribed some oral and topical prednisone to help the poison ivy I got a couple weekends ago and which doesn’t seem to be clearing up.
Stopped at the pharmacy on the way home to pick up my meds and of course they’re closed for the holiday.
Spent the rest of the afternoon clearing out the basement and filling a dumpster that’s sitting in our driveway. (Which is how the earlobe accident happened - I was breaking down an old TV cabinet when I whacked myself.)
I’m exhausted now, gonna take a shower and spend the rest of the night playing games on the computer.
Sounds like a rough holiday. Enjoy your games!
My lovely wife is in her colonoscopy prep period, so we’re enjoying a day at home with a little gardening and a grocery trip. I plan to read in the hammock, then make a restricted dinner, then we’ll watch fireworks on television.
Hiding from the celebration a bit down the street.
Two naps so far. I swear I will hose the back yard down before another nap catches me.
My son loved fireworks. We used to watch them, even walking far to do so.
The official display is too far from me right now.
Waiting for “The Kids” to arrive from various corners of the planet.
Sick of cancelled flights, one set of kids might give up on the last leg of their air travel and just rent a car …
… and mayyyybe make it in time for the neighborhood fireworks!
(Another set decided that if they’re flying through O’Hare, they’d rather stop there for a while and head downtown for some Italian Beef.)
Back in high school and part of college I worked at a hospital in a relief job, meaning it was all weekends and holidays, along with summer vacation hours for my colleagues. Sundays and holidays were all time and a half, even though it was my job to work then. I actually wouldn’t mind doing that again now.
I loved both time and a half and not having a lot of meetings or staff around on weekend/night/holiday hospital per diem.
We put translucent film on our big front windows years ago, so we didn’t have to close the drapes to keep people from looking in. Soon after that we got a projector that could hang from the ceiling. We played Halloween shorts in October.
Later, we played Christmas shorts and snowflakes and all. This is the first year we’ll be projecting fireworks. The Boy borrowed a speaker set from work, to add the sound.
We thought of it late enough that I think we’ve only told one of the neighbors. But we’ll sit in the front yard and watch it with at least one other person. Later. It’s not dark and it’s only down to 99F.
Mixed bag here - enjoying (NOT) my first bout of Covid which is finally moving towards the feel sick but not so sick I can’t READ (whole new meaning to Neflix and Chills, natch) but that meant I had a completely valid reason to not spend the 4th with my wife’s extended family, some of whom are Trumpy and I couldn’t have stood their gloating.
Working.
If I’m not working my usual job, then I am working on the house and homestead.
We live on 15 acres with a barn, lots of old cars, and an old log house. Most of my time is spent working.
A couple of social stops, then I went to a known Bald Eagle nest where a couple of eaglets are growing up. One had fallen partway down the tree and was trying to climb/fly back up, but I’m not sure if he’s going to make it.
Totally keeping my head down tonight.
We went to a cousin’s house. They hosted a family BBQ with about 25 people.
Wife bumped into a couple of friends while walking dogs in the woods. Invited them over for beers.
My Wife and I had already planned to cook some steaks so we did that first before they came over (only had two).
They brought their three dogs, so we had five dogs running around. Was nice.
My wife and I played chess after they left. We each took a game.
It’s July 5th and, after bunches of mortar fireworks going up all night in the neighborhood, nothing appears to have burned down. At least not nearby.
Every year, I either volunteer at or run the Peachtree Road Race, the world’s largest 10K. This year I ran, and wish I hadn’t. Temperature 81° at the start, and 60% humidity, made for a miserable experience. The conditions wiped me out to the point that I had to walk parts of the race, something I hate doing.
When I finally staggered across the finish line - I did make my goal of finishing under 1:20, but only by nine minutes - I flopped down on the grass and spent the next half hour battling waves of nausea, dizziness, and cramps. I got home after another mile-and-a-half long tramp in the heat to the train station, where the motion of the subway brought on dry heaves. I didn’t really start to feel okay until I puked in the toilet, and then took a long shower. I found out later that the Atlanta Track Club declared black flag conditions about 90 minutes after I finished, and cancelled the rest of the race.
I’m not sure I can stand another huge summer 10K like that. Just too many people, too much heat. On the other hand, an insidious little voice is telling to train up for a fast qualifying race in the fall, that I could use for an earlier wave, and thus earlier start, next year.
