Have you gotten a Straight Dope warning before?

I’m feeling kinda sleepy.

I’m sorry. What was the question?

If you want to walk on water, you have to know where the rocks are.

I got one for not worshipping that kid who yelled at the old fat guys at the UN.

I suspect many of the people who haven’t had a warning are, like me, more lurkers than truly active posters and are the very people who are unlikely to respond to this poll.

No warnings. Only one mod note from a nolonger-a-mod mod.

I don’t think I’ve ever been warned, so I voted no, but I can’t say for certain. I have almost 50,000 posts and have written in all states of mind, so it wouldn’t surprise me if I slipped up at some point.

No warnings in over 20 years. CK Dexter Haven once gave me an admonition for posting all the lyrics to a song. I just wasn’t thinking when I did that - I know the rules.

One. It was a remark about Trump in a GQ thread. I sent a PM to the mod apologizing and saying I just couldn’t pass up such succulent, low-hanging fruit. The reply was, “Understandable, but still…”

I got one a few years ago, don’t remember what is was for, but it was rescinded a few days later.

Yes, I received a warning several years ago, for commenting that another poster was living up to his negative screen name.

How do you check now? I knew how on thew old site…but here, I cannot find the “infractions” area.

In nearly 20 years here, I’ve had a couple, neither of which did I think were particularly warranted, and seemed to be the result of the mods having had a bad day and being extremely touchy.

In one, I was pointing out that cops can’t win in a certain situation- if they pull over intentional polluters (“coal-rollers”), then they’ll scream bloody murder about why aren’t the cops pulling over lower income minorities driving poorly maintained cars that pollute, and if they pull those people over, people will scream that they’re unfairly targeting them and threatening their livelihoods, etc… I just used more direct terms than “low income minorities” and “cars in poor repair”.

in another, I got slapped because I overlooked a moderator comment outlawing economic discussion in a thread and posted an economic discussion, which seems positively perplexing, compared to some of the hostility and condescension I’ve seen elsewhere on here that goes unmoderated.

It really isnt hard to know you have unpopular opinions.

Yes, but why do you assume that you’re reported for unpopularity? Maybe you’re reported the same reason EVERYBODY ELSE is, for breaking rules?

sigh. Look, let us say you have a post that is kinda, sora maybe a insult. But everyone in that thread agrees with you. You are unlikely to be reported. If however, you are one voice against many, you will get reported.

I got my first and only warning shortly after the move here. On the plus side it did encourage me to figure out the ‘block’ feature.

There was another thing that I could have gotten a warning about but I pointed out my own post to the mod and they took pity on me.

Unfortunately, the old infractions tab in the profile did not port over from vBulletin. However, records of warnings under vBulletin are still retained in the mod forum. They are not readily available to posters.

If a warning is issued in Discourse, I believe a message is sent to the poster. However, I don’t know if a summary is available to posters in their profiles. Mods can see the number of warnings issued in Discourse in the poster’s profile.

I think I’m seeing less warnings now that we’ve switched over. Maybe it’s the tools allowing us time to preview, collect thoughts and leave a comment unpublished until you return to it, or trash it. then the ability to edit and delete a published comment. Maybe discourse is raising the bar. Idk time will tell. So warns she who sounds like a smug alarmist.

A couple of deserved verbals, but nothing on my ‘permanent record’.

I have been told to “dial it way back”, but never anything official. Unlike in real life, where my mouth can become engaged with little or no thought and spews whats inside of it without much in the way of discretion, this place has the option of deleting the message before it gets placed in public.

I’m pretty sure that I’ve saved myself from a lot of arguing as well as notes and warnings by deleting about 2/3 of what I write.

It’ll cost you at least a dollar. I don’t show thigh for free, ya know.
